March 3, 2004 – George J. Mitchell is Elected Chairman of The Walt Disney Company

On March 3, 2004, former U.S. Senator Majority Leader George J. Mitchell was elected chairman of The Walt Disney Company. Mitchell joined The Walt Disney Company in 1995, having been elected to the board; he was named the presiding director on December 3, 2002. His tenure as chairman wasn’t without controversy, as the company was going through a period of turmoil, which included the ousting of then-CEO Michael Eisner. Mitchell departed from his role at Disney on December 31, 2007.

February 28, 2006 – Lady and the Tramp is Released on 2-Disc Special Edition DVD

“Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, filled with memorable music and purebred fun, now shines like never before with an all-new digital restoration!”

On February 28, 2006, the animated feature film Lady and the Tramp was released on a 50th anniversary edition two-disc DVD; this marked the film’s first time being released on DVD. This was the sixth release in the Disney Platinum Edition line. The film was digitally restored, and several bonuses were included on the release, including a making-of documentary, the original 1943 storyboard version of the film, deleted sequences, and DVD games made for the release.

February 23, 2004 – Fortune Magazine Reports: Disney is America’s Most Admired Entertainment Company

“That other entertainment industry executives recognized this by voting Disney No. 1 in our industry is a tribute to the hard work of our incredible creative and dedicated cast members and employees.” – Michael Eisner, Disney Chairman and CEO

On February 23, 2004, Fortune Magazine published a list of America’s Most Admired Companies, with The Walt Disney Company taking the number one spot. This list was based on a survey of top members of the entertainment industry, including executives, directors, and securities analysts. 2003 had been a year of growth for the company, particularly through investments in live action films (such as the first installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series), as well as the continued success of their partner studio Pixar (which released Finding Nemo in that year). Stocks also rose 43% during the calendar year.

February 22, 2004 – Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Wins Screen Actors Guild Award

On February 22, 2004, the 10th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, California, honoring achievements in film and television. Johnny Depp was awarded for his Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Depp won against such actors as Peter Dinklage, Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, and Sean Penn.

February 21, 2004 – Snow White – An Enchanting New Musical Has Premiere at Fantasyland Theater

“Live on stage at Disneyland!”

On February 21, 2004, the elaborate stage show Snow White – An Enchanting New Musical had a premiere at Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theater, two days before its official opening. It was the most elaborate stage production to be held at that theater at the time, and was produced exclusively for the park. The musical ran until 2006 when it was replaced by the Disney Princess Fantasy Faire. The show was free with park admission. It was directed by Eric Schaeffer, with the show adapted by Norman Allen and Darrah Cloud. It originally starred Anne Warren as Snow White, Stuart Ambrose as the Prince, Elizabeth Wardland as the Queen, Lisa Wolpe as the Hag, and featured the voice of Patrick Stewart as the Magic Mirror.

February 20, 2002 – New Madame Leota Tombstone is Placed in Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion

“Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all, in regions beyond now, but having a ball.”

On February 20, 2002, it was reported that a new interactive feature was added to the Haunted Mansion attraction in Walt Disney World: a gravestone honoring Madame Leota. The tombstone features a dimensional bust of  the ghostly medium, and features her blinking and staring at guests at random intervals; her tombstone is the last one seen before guests enter the mansion.

February 18, 2008 – Disney’s Vero Beach Honors Baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda

“Disney’s Vero Beach has enjoyed a tremendous relationship with Tommy Lasorda and the Los Angeles Dodgers through the years, and we’re absolutely thrilled to name such a central part of our resort in Mr. Lasorda’s honor.” – Sonya Deese-Byrnes, General Manager of Disney Vacation Club Resorts

On February 18, 2008, a special ceremony was held at Disney’s Vero Beach resort, a Disney Vacation Club resort in Walt Disney World. This ceremony honored former Los Angeles Dodgers’ former manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda by renaming the recreation field of the resort as Lasorda Field; the Dodgers have used Vero Beach as a training area, with the Dodgertown training complex opening in 1948. Lasorda was on hand at the renaming ceremony to throw out the first pitch on the field, and was joined at the ceremony by several representatives from the Walt Disney Company, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and children from the local Boys & Girls Club.

February 8, 2001 – The Quick-Service Restaurant Award Wieners Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Introducing an all-star ensemble of gourmet, street-style hot dogs and sausages.”

On February 8, 2001, the quick-service restaurant Award Wieners opened in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney California Adventure. The restaurant sells gourmet hot dogs, such as the BBQ Crunch Dog, and the Spicy City Dog, as well as specialty fries and seasonal offerings.

February 7, 2006 – The Compilation Album Radio Disney Jams, Vol. 8 is Released

“I’m strange and I like it, that’s just the way I am.”

On February 7, 2006, the compilation album Radio Disney Jams, Vol. 8 was released through Walt Disney Records. The album featured songs that were at the top of the charts for the radio station throughout 2006; the artists ranged from Disney Channel stars to pop artists, including The Cheetah Girls, Bowling for Soup, and Rihanna. The compilation album also included a bonus CD that featured music videos of these popular songs.

January 30, 2000 – Disney’s “Tapestry of Nations” is the Super Bowl XXXIV Halftime Show

“Put your hand on the future, share a dream together around the world.”

On January 30, 2000, Super Bowl XXXIV was held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans. The halftime show at this game was produced by Disney and was titled “Tapestry of Nations,” based on the then-running Epcot parade and inspired by Disney’s millennial celebrations. Several prominent performers were on hand, including Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Phil Collins, and Toni Braxton; there was also an 80-person choir, a full symphony orchestra, and a narration by Edward James Olmos.
