August 17, 2002 – Aida Celebrates 1,000th Performance

“The gods love Nubia, their glorious creation, its songs roll sweetly across the harvest plain.”

On August 17, 2002, the Elton John and Tim Rice musical Aida celebrated its milestone 1,000th performance at the evening show. Originally opening on March 23, 2000, the show opened with Adam Pascal as Radames, Sherie Rene Scott as Amneris, and Heather Hedley as Aida (who would go on to win the Tony Award for her performance). The 1,000th show featured Pascal alongside Simone as Aida and Felicia Finley as Amneris.

June 16, 2016 – The Shanghai Disneyland Band Begins Performing

“Get in the swing as this lively ensemble welcomes you to Mickey Avenue with a high-spirited mix of music and fun.”

On June 16, 2016, the Shanghai Disneyland Band began their performances on Shanghai Disneyland’s Mickey Avenue. This entertainment ensemble features marching band instruments, along with some slide whistles and kazoos to entertain guests of all ages. The show last twenty minutes, and occurs throughout the day.

January 30

January 30, 2000 – Disney’s “Tapestry of Nations” is the Super Bowl XXXIV Halftime Show

“Put your hand on the future, share a dream together around the world.”

On January 30, 2000, Super Bowl XXXIV was held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, between the St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans. The halftime show at this game was produced by Disney and was titled “Tapestry of Nations,” based on the then-running Epcot parade and inspired by Disney’s millennial celebrations. Several prominent performers were on hand, including Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Phil Collins, and Toni Braxton; there was also an 80-person choir, a full symphony orchestra, and a narration by Edward James Olmos.

January 9, 1977 – The New Mousketeers Perform at Super Bowl XI

“Ladies and gentlemen, the entire audience of Super Bowl XI presents from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, a greeting to the world of peace, joy, and love.”

On January 9, 1977, Super Bowl XI was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This halftime show was produced by Disney, and was used to promote the revamp of the Mickey Mouse Club by featuring the New Mousketeers performing alongside the LAUSD All-City Band. The presentation centered around the theme of the it’s a small world attraction, including the themes of “peace, joy, and love.” For the first time in a halftime show, the audience of the game was invited to participate through the waving of colored placards.

November 16, 2003 – Toni Braxton Holds Final Performance in Aida

“So, I was taking a little bit of a risk, but I came here to New York and I say [Aida] and I was like: ‘Oh, God! It’s so beautiful! I’m so glad I said yes!’” – Toni Braxton

On November 16, 2003, R&B singer and songwriter Toni Braxton gave her final performance as the titular character in the Broadway musical Aida. This was the second time Braxton took the lead role in a Disney musical, with the first being a stint as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Her engagement in the show began on June 30, and she was replaced by Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams.

August 28, 2001 – Beauty and the Beast Celebrates its 3000th Performance

“Tale as old as time…”

On August 28, 2001, the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast celebrated a milestone of 3000 performances, with the musical shortly after being named the 10th longest running musical on Broadway of all time. The production had been through many changes since its first performance on April 18, 1994, including special guest stars playing lead roles (such as Toni Braxton playing Belle), new songs added, and new wardrobe stylings. The musical ran until July 29, 2007, reaching 5,461 performances, and reaching the peak of the 9th longest running musical on the Great White Way, with fellow Disney musical The Lion King surpassing it and standing at 3rd.

May 9, 2008 – The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Hosts The Magical Music of Disney

“‘Be Our Guest’ as you ‘Step in Time’ to the Magical Music of Disney.”

On May 9, 2008, a special performance by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra entitled The Magical Music of Disney was presented. The special orchestration, held from May 9 through May 11, featured pieces from Disney classics both new and old, ranging from Mary Poppins to Beauty and the Beast. The orchestra was joined by singers and dancers to accompany the popular pieces. Similar performances have been held at other concert halls, adding more popular pieces through the years, including instrumentals from Pirates of the Caribbean to the hit songs from Frozen.
