May 26, 1990 – The Merchandise Spot Calling Dick Tracy Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

“Starring YOU…in your screen test debut.”

On May 26, the themed merchandise spot Calling Dick Tracy opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios park. Located on Hollywood Boulevard, the store was created to promote the live-action feature film Dick Tracy, which opened on June 15, 1990. The store gave guests a chance to star in their own Dick Tracy adventure and take home a video version. The store eventually closed on January 12, 1991, and was replaced with Legends of Hollywood.

March 31, 2012 – The Avengers-Themed Monorail Debuts in Walt Disney World

On March 31, 2012, the day after the official announcement on the Walt Disney Parks Blog, the newly designed Avengers-themed monorail, affectionately known as the “Avengerail,” debuted in Walt Disney World. Featuring characters played by actors Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor), the monorail promoted the film, which was scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012.

November 11, 1946 – Walt Disney Appears in Armistice Day Parade in Georgia

“Out of the past of every nation has come its folklore: simple tales handed down from generation to generation and made immortal by such names as Aesop, the brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Anderson.”

On November 11, 1946, an Armistice Day parade was held in Atlanta, Georgia; Walt Disney made a special appearance in the parade, as he was there to promote his upcoming film Song of the South, which was to premiere the next day. Disney had worked extensively with the family of author Joel Chandler Harris, original author of the Uncle Remus Stories, since he acquired the rights in 1939, and had visited Atlanta often to get a feel for the area where the stories were set. The parade featured several floats and bands, as well as representations of the characters from the upcoming film.

July 25, 2008 – Bolt Across America Fundraiser Kicks Off in New York City

On July 25, 2008, the cross-country fundraising event Bolt Across America kicked off in New York City. The event, promoting Disney’s newest animated feature film Bolt, was held in conjunction with the ASPCA to raise funds and awareness for shelter animals across the United States. Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus, who plays the character Penny in the film, was on hand to kick off the event, which featured four people in giant hamster wheel-like contraptions to roll across the country to raise funds.

June 13, 1960 – Hayley Mills Appears as Pollyanna on the Cover of Life Magazine

On June 13, 1960, actress and Disney Legend Hayley Mills was featured on the cover of Life Magazine as the titular film character Pollyanna. The film was a success with film critics since its release in May, with the article focusing on young Mills, who would go on to win the Academy Juvenile Award for the role.

April 28, 2012 – Mickey Mouse Makes Special Appearance at Yankee Stadium

“On April 28, Mickey Mouse appeared at Yankee Stadium in time to catch a baseball game.”

On April 28, 2012, as a way to promote the arrival of the cruise ship Disney Magic in New York City, Mickey Mouse, dressed as a Disney Cruise Line captain, made a special appearance in Yankee Stadium. Along with the Disney Cruise Line sponsoring the game that day, Disney also donated 100 tickets to the Boys and Girls Club. In addition, Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson took some time to pose with Mickey on the mound of the field.

February 22, 1954 – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is Featured in LIFE Magazine

“We are delighted that Mr. Disney has seen fit to treat Jules Verne with the proper reverence in his new film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”

On February 22, 1954, LIFE Magazine featured Disney’s newest live-action adventure as a cover story. The article takes readers behind the scenes of the upcoming film, interviewing several actor-divers, cameramen, and directors, and featured a several-page picture spread of underwater work to create the film.

November 21, 2007 – Enchanted Actress Amy Adams and Walt Disney Studios Chairman Richard Cook Ring the Closing Bell of the New York Stock Exchange

“I’ve been dreaming of a true love’s kiss…”

On November 21, 2007, actress Amy Adams and Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios Richard Cook were asked to ring the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange. Both were invited to promote the newest Disney feature Enchanted, opening the same day and starring Adams as Giselle, a fairytale character that finds herself in Manhattan. Adams and Cook spent time before the bell taking pictures and talking with traders on the floor.

November 2, 1963 – Julie Andrews Performs at a Special Promotional Event at the Golden Horseshoe in Disneyland

“Your silvery beams will bring love’s dreams, we’ll be cuddlin’ soon by the silvery moon.”

On November 2, 1963, Julie Andrews and the Dapper Dans joined the cast of the Golden Horseshoe for a special press-only promotional event for Mary Poppins, which would open the following year. Among the songs performed by the cast, Andrews and Wally Boag performed the standard “By The Light of the Silvery Moon.” This was not the first time that Andrews and Boag had shared the stage, as Andrews was a plant in the audience for Boag’s stage act in London.
