December 22, 2009 – 500 Tuba Players Gather is Disneyland’s Downtown Disney

“The fact that it is held at the Happiest Place on Earth helps bring out a lot of tuba players. There’s a lot of magic brought about by it.” – Richard Dean, vice president of San Dimas High’s music program

On December 22, 2009, the 36th annual Tuba Christmas took place, this time in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney shopping area. This was the fifth appearance for the tuba players in Disneyland, and the largest gathering of all the Tuba Christmas events, with over 500 taking place worldwide. Although the group hadn’t met before this event, they were able to serenade Disney park shoppers with several familiar songs, including “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

December 20, 2007 – The First Mark VII Monorail Train Arrives in Disneyland

“Ride the historic, high-speed zero-emission transportation system that rockets along a single rain through the Disneyland Resort.”

On December 20, 2007, the first Mark VII train arrived at Disneyland as part of the refurbishment of the monorail from Mark V to Mark VII. The trains had to follow a specific numbering system, with the Mark VI trains being used on the Walt Disney World monorail system. This new Mark VII train was red in color and nicknamed Monorail Red. The train would not begin operating until July 2008, due to issues in design and specific changes. There are three colors in the Mark VII fleet: Red, Blue, and Orange.

December 18, 2009 – The Updated Version of The Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln Opens

“Encounter the Great Emancipator as he returns to tell the tale of generations past and share his stirring vision of the future.”

On December 18, 2009, the updated attraction The Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln officially reopened. This update featured the latest in Audio-Animatronic technology, including a new version of President Lincoln; his new face can create a total of 20 different functions, as opposed to the seven of the earlier version. Imagineers knew how popular this attraction is with guests, and made sure that the attraction blended old and new elements to keep the feel of the original attraction.

December 11, 2007 – Wave Seven of the Walt Disney Treasures Sets is Released

On December 11, 2007, the seventh wave of the Walt Disney Treasures sets was released through Walt Disney Home Entertainment. This wave featured three sets: The Chronological Donald, Volume Three; The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit; and Disneyland: Secrets, Stories and Magic. The first set featured Donald Duck’s filmography from 1947 through 1950, including a documentary about the character called “The Many Faces of Donald Duck.” The Oswald set contains all the Oswald cartoons, as of the date of release, that had not been considered lost, and had been remastered; Ozzie of the Mounted, Tall Timber, and Bright Lights were newly rediscovered before the release of the set. The Oswald set also featured three Alice Comedies (known as Before Oswald) and two Mickey Mouse shorts and the Silly Symphony Skeleton Dance (known as After Oswald), as well as the documentary The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story. The last set features a documentary about Disneyland, as well as other specials and tidbits about the Disney Park.

November 12, 2006 – Disney Vault 28 has Grand Opening

“Picture a red-carpet grand opening of Orange County’s hippest new upscale boutique that offers funky, fashionable merchandise uniquely targeted to the fashion-savvy shopper who follows the current trends.”

On November 12, 2006, the boutique Disney Vault 28 had its red carpet grand opening in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District, although it had already been open since October 11. Several celebrities and designers were on hand for the celebration, including Nicole Richie, Josh Henderson, and Tim Salmon of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The store sold a variety of designer-brand clothing and accessories, many in collaboration with Disney; designers included Dooney & Bourke, Tarina Tarantino, and HARVEYS for Disney Couture. The store was officially closed on September 24, 2017.

November 5, 2007 – The Partners Federal Credit Union is Officially Formed

“Imagine what we can do together.”

On November 5, 2007, the merger of the Vista Federal Credit Union and the Partners Federal Credit Union to create the new Partners Federal Credit Union for Disneyland and Walt Disney World employees.  The previous two credit unions had a long history of operation, with the original Partners Federal Credit Union beginning operation on March 18, 1968, and the Vista Federal Credit Union beginning on April 26, 1960. Created as “cast members serving cast members,” the credit union offers several banking and financing services.

November 2, 1992 – The Disneyland Attraction Mission to Mars Closes

“Welcome to Mission Control, space travelers.”

On November 2, 1992, after almost twenty years of operation, Disneyland’s Tomorrowland attraction Mission to Mars closed. The attraction was a revamped version of the original Flight to the Moon; a revision had been required since the United States landed on the moon in 1969. Clips from the 1957 Disney anthology episode “Mars and Beyond” were also used in the attraction, giving guests an idea of what they could expect once man could reach Mars. The attraction was not replaced for a lengthy period of time, but simply shuttered; in 1998, part of the building was used as part of Redd Rocket’s Pizza Port restaurant.

October 29, 2002 – Disneyland Celebrates the Angels Winning the World Series

“The event was a home run for Angels fans of all ages.”

On October 29, 2002, Disneyland celebrated the Anaheim Angels’ first World Series championship win with a special parade running through the park. The parade featured the team; Jackie Autry, the widow of the team’s founder Gene Autry; Angels manager Mike Scioscia; and, of course, the World Series trophy. The parade traveled between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and was accompanied by a special dance party and a fireworks show.

October 23, 1954 – Walt Disney Appears on the Cover of TV Guide

“Disney in TV Land: The old maestro is trying to top a fabulous career.”

On October 23, 1954, Walt Disney appeared on the front cover of TV Guide, alongside Goofy, Mickey, Pluto, Donald, and Dopey. The picture was meant to describe the featured article: “Why Disney Changed His Mind About TV,” which was all about Walt Disney’s newest show, Disneyland, which would be the first incarnation of the long-running anthology series. The article featured exclusive sketches of what would become Disneyland, and explained why Disney finally took the plunge and entered the realm of television.

October 10, 2002 – The Walt Disney Company and Frito-Lay Announce Multi-Year Partnership

“Our presence at Disney properties is a new channel for us to offer a wide variety of fun snacks catering to consumers’ needs.” – Frito-Lay President and CEO Al Bru

On October 10, 2002, it was announced in a press release that the Walt Disney Company and Frito-Lay had entered into a multi-year agreement where Frito-Lay products would be featured in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks. Not only would Frito-Lay snacks, such as Doritos and Lay’s chips, be sold in the parks’ restaurants and snack kiosks, but Frito-Lay would also sponsor several attractions, such as the California Screamin’ roller coaster in Disney California Adventure.
