June 3, 2007 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Wins Best Movie at the MTV Movie Awards

On June 3, 2007, the 2007 MTV Movie Awards were held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. The Disney live-action feature Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest scored two awards at the ceremony, including Best Movie; it beat out other blockbusters 300, Blades of Glory, Borat, and Little Miss Sunshine. Johnny Depp was also awarded Best Performance for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the film, beating the likes of Beyonce for Dreamgirls and Gerard Butler for 300.

February 8, 1965 – Julie Andrews Wins Golden Globe for Mary Poppins Performance

“Finally, my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie, and who made all this possible in the first place: Mr. Jack Warner.”

On February 8, 1965, the 22nd Golden Globes were held. The talk of the night was the race between Warner Brothers’ My Fair Lady and Walt Disney Pictures’ Mary Poppins, particularly because of Julie Andrews, as she had originated the lead of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady on Broadway, but was not cast in Mary Poppins as Jack Warner believed Andrews lacked the name recognition that Audrey Hepburn had. Julie Andrews would, that night, win the Golden Globe for her performance as the titular character in Disney’s film, thanking Jack Warner in a tongue-in-cheek manner as she accepted her award. Of the four Golden Globe nominations Mary Poppins received, Andrews’ award was the only one that the film won.

November 30, 1995 – Nine New Disney Legends are Inducted

“Since its inception, the [Disney Legends] program has honored many gifted animators, Imagineers, songwriters, actors, and business leaders as having made a significant impact on the Disney legacy.”

On November 30, the ninth group of Disney Legends was honored and inducted in a special ceremony held in the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. Among those honored were Golden Horseshoe Revue performers Wally Boag, Fulton Burley, and Betty Taylor, actor Dean Jones, actress Angela Lansbury, Disneyland publicist Edward Meck, animator Fred Moore, voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft, and Audio-Animatronic Imagineer Wathel Rogers.

September 17, 2004 – Eleven New Inductees are Named Disney Legends

“We owe so much to this group that represents the best of Disney – their work is the arc that connects Disney’s history with our success today.”

On September 17, 2004, the newest group of Disney Legends were honored at a special ceremony at the Disney Legends Plaza at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The ceremonies were presided over by then CEO Michael Eisner, who originally created the honor in 1987. The honorees that were present participated in the handprint ceremony, with their handprints then hung in the plaza for all to see. Among those honored were film and television producer Bill Anderson, actor Tim Conway, Imagineer Rolly Crump, Imagineer Alice Davis, actress Karen Dotrice, actor Matthew Garber, ABC Chairman of the Board Leonard Goldenson, Imagineer Bob Gurr, conductor and orchestrator Irwin Kostal, Imagineer Ralph Kent, and animator and story man Mel Shaw.

August 10, 2013 – Eight New Disney Legends are Inducted at the D23 Expo

“…today we are celebrating some of the remarkable people behind the Disney Magic.” – Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger

On August 10, 2013, at the D23 Expo, Chairman and CEO Bob Iger and host Tom Bergeron presented the next eight inductees into the Disney Legends line, joining 249 others that have been recognized for their contributions to the Disney legacy. The 2013 inductees included Imagineers Tony Baxter and Collin Campbell, television personality Dick Clark, actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman, Apple founder Steve Jobs, animator Glen Keane, and comedian Ed Wynn. For those still living, the honorees were brought to the stage to be given a special trophy and to say a few words about their career or time with Disney. A special presentation was held for those that had passed away prior to the awards.

June 13, 1960 – Hayley Mills Appears as Pollyanna on the Cover of Life Magazine

On June 13, 1960, actress and Disney Legend Hayley Mills was featured on the cover of Life Magazine as the titular film character Pollyanna. The film was a success with film critics since its release in May, with the article focusing on young Mills, who would go on to win the Academy Juvenile Award for the role.

May 8, 2006 – The Leads for the Broadway Version of the Mary Poppins Musical Are Announced

On May 8, 2006, the American production of Mary Poppins officially announced its leads: Ashley Brown as Mary, and Gavin Lee as Bert. Brown had previous experience with Disney Theatrical, starring in the touring show On the Record, and making her Broadway debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Lee had originated the role of Bert in the West End Production, and was brought to Broadway thanks to his charming interpretation of the character. It was also announced that the official Broadway production would open November 16.

April 20, 1914 – Actress and Voice Actress Betty Lou Gerson is Born

On April 20, 1914, Betty Lou Gerson was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Her family followed her father’s work, as he was an executive with a steel company, and she was raised in Birmingham, Alabama. When she was sixteen, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she attracted attention as a performer on the radio serial The First Nighter Program opposite Don Ameche. She continued her radio career with a string of soap opera hits, including Lonely Women and Midstream. She moved to Los Angeles in 1940, and continued her streak of popular radio programs, including Mr. President and Johnny Dollar. Gerson also broke into the television and movie mediums, starring in some B-list films and popular television series, such as Perry Mason and The Twilight Zone. Gerson was hired by Disney in an uncredited role as the narrator in the beginning of the film Cinderella, but she is well-known for playing the villainous Cruella de Vil from One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Gerson also has a cameo in the film Mary Poppins as an old crone. Her role as Cruella is so beloved that she was honored as a Disney Legend in 1996. Gerson passed away in 1999 at the age of 84.

March 23, 1950 – Bobby Driscoll Wins the Academy Juvenile Award

On March 23, 1950, the 22nd Academy Awards were held at the Royal Pantages Theater in Hollywood, California. For his work in the Disney film So Dear to My Heart, as well as the RKO film The Window, Bobby Driscoll was awarded with the Academy Juvenile Award as the best juvenile actor of 1949. So Dear to My Heart was Driscoll’s second film for the Disney Studios, and he had received several positive reviews for his role as Jeremiah Kincaid. He was the ninth recipient of the award, joining actors such as Mickey Rooney and Shirley Temple.

December 15, 1933 – Comedian and Disney Legend Tim Conway is Born

“It’s interesting when you come to Disney, you get a script, go to wardrobe, and then you meet your animal.”

On December 15, 1933, Thomas Daniel Conway was born in Willoughby, Ohio, and grew up in the aptly named Chagrin Falls. He attended the Bowling Green State University to major in speech and radio; after graduating, he joined the Army, where he served for two years. After being discharged, he wound up back in Cleveland to work with radio personality Ernie Anderson. After working with Anderson on several projects, he was noticed by comedic actress Rose Marie, who decided to take him under her wing, which led him to a spot on The Steve Allen Show as a regular. It was his following project, as Ensign Charles Parker on McHale’s Navy, which gave Conway a national presence. After the show ended, he worked several other shows before landing at The Carol Burnett Show, where he was awarded with five Emmy Awards during his time. Conway first started working with Disney in 1973, when he starred in the live action feature The World’s Greatest Athlete, and followed that with the 1975 film The Apple Dumpling Gang, 1976’s Gus, and 1979’s The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. Conway has also contributed to the Air Bud series, as well as several Disney television shows. For his work in the Disney medium, he was honored as a Disney Legend in 2004.
