June 7, 2005 – The Compilation Album Disney Girlz Rock is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Together we can shoot the moon, stop the rain, even ride a hurricane.”

On June 7, 2005, the compilation album Disney Girlz Rock was released through Walt Disney Records. It featured a variety of songs by female Disney artists, or female artists featured in Disney projects, including A*Teens, Lindsay Lohan, Raven-Symoné, The Cheetah Girls, Hilary and Haylie Duff, Caleigh Peters, Everlife, Aly & AJ, The Beu Sisters, Hayden Panettiere, Christy Carlson Romano, Christina Aguilera, and Myra. A second compilation was released in 2008.

June 4, 2006 – The Musical The Lion King Closes at the New Amsterdam Theatre

“Till we find our place on the path unwinding, in the circle, the circle of life.”

On June 4, 2006, the Broadway musical The Lion King held its final performance at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City. The show had been at the theatre since October 10, 1997, and was lauded for its imaginative interpretation of the animated feature film source. The production, fortunately, was not closed permanently; the show was to be transferred to the Minskoff Theatre, while the production of Mary Poppins would be taking its place at the New Amsterdam. The Minskoff Theatre underwent some custom renovations to accommodate the incoming production, and the show opened in the theatre on June 13th. As of 2019, the Minskoff Theatre is still home to The Lion King.

June 2, 2003 – Disney’s Toontown Online Officially Launches

“Ever wonder what it’d be like to live life as a toon?”

On June 2, 2003, the online community game Disney’s Toontown Online officially launched. The game was a multiplayer online role-playing game, and was developed by Disney’s Virtual Reality Studio, Schell Games, and Frogchildren Studios. Users could create their own toon avatar, and battle against antagonists called Cogs. There was also an early social media component to the game known as “SpeedChat,” with pre-approved phrases that users could use to chat with other users. The game was officially shut down on September 19, 2013.

May 26, 2006 – The Tony Danza Show Ends

“I’m Tony Danza and I’m in New York City, live!”

On May 26, 2006, the daytime talk show The Tony Danza Show ended its run on television. Beginning on September 13, 2004, and distributed by Buena Vista Television, the show was hosted by actor Tony Danza and recorded at the ABC studio complex. Its most well-known gimmick was a game called “Extravadanza,” which was a Plinko-style game that was played with a home viewer. The series ran for only two seasons before it was cancelled due to low ratings.

May 21, 2008 – The Online Game Virtual Magic Kingdom Officially Shuts Down

On May 21, 2008, the online multiplayer game Virtual Magic Kingdom officially shut down its services. A joint project between Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and Sulake Corporation, the game was created as a promotional tool to celebrate 50 years of Disney theme parks. The beta version of the game opened on May 23, 2005. Guests could create their own avatar and walk around themed lands similar to those found in Disneyland and Walt Disney World and play a variety of mini-games, such as Jungle Cruise Photo Safari, and a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed game of Capture the Flag. Guests were also able to complete special quests and collect display badges, pins, and clothes for their avatar.

May 17, 2004 – The Restaurant The Artist’s Palette Opens

“Delight your palate with a meal at The Artist’s Palette restaurant at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.”

On May 17, 2004, the counter-service restaurant The Artist’s Palette opened in Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa in Walt Disney World. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant provides quick-service meals such as gourmet sandwiches, savory pies, and salads.

May 7, 2002 – Four Disney Classics are Released in the Vault Disney Collection

On May 7, 2002, four classic Disney live-action films were released on DVD through the Vault Disney Collection: Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, The Parent Trap, and Pollyanna. Although not the first home video release for these films, this was their first DVD release. Each release comes with a few special features, including a documentary about the film, as well as audio commentary from the surviving actors.

May 5, 2005 – The Action Show Attraction Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show Opens

“Get ready for extreme thrills as this full-throttle, high-octane live stunt spectacular comes roaring in from Disneyland Resort Paris.”

On May 5, 2005, the stunt action show Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show opened in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios park. The show shows guests the behind-the-scenes of extreme stunts, such as physical stunts and car chases through dangerous settings. The Hollywood Studios attraction was based on the show Moteurs…Action! Stunt Show Spectacular from Disneyland Paris. The Hollywood Studios attraction was closed on April 2, 2016, to make way for the new expansion areas of the park.

April 29, 2001 – The Timekeeper Attraction Closes in Walt Disney World

“For your safety, I’ve invented rails for you to lean on. I call them, ‘lean rails.’ Please do not sit on the lean rails because…they’re there to lean on.”

On April 29, 2001, the Tomorrowland attraction The Timekeeper closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. It was adapted from the Disneyland Paris attraction Un Voyage à Travers le Temps (known as From Time to Time in English), and used the Circle-Vision 360° film technique, along with Audio-Animatronics, to tell a narrative. Guests would wait in the lobby and meet the invention known as 9-Eye (voiced by Rhea Perlman). Guests would then enter the theater and meet the Timekeeper (voiced by Robin Williams), an inventor who created a time machine. He then sends 9-Eye back in time to record her experiences in important times of the past. After the attraction closed, it would reopen seasonally until it officially closed on February 26, 2006; it was eventually replaced by the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor.

April 21, 2006 – The Live Show Disney Live! Mickey’s Magic Show Premieres

“Abracadabra! It’s Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show!”

On April 21, 2006, the touring stage production Disney Live! Mickey’s Magic Show premiered in Columbia, South Carolina. This was the second production by Feld Entertainment in conjunction with Disney. The show featured Mickey and Minnie putting on a magic show, which brought forth magic from the most beloved Disney films, such as Aladdin and Fantasia; the underlying theme was finding the magic deep within us.
