On September 6, 2004, the children’s book Disney Villains: The Essential Guide was published through DK Children, a well-known British publishing company that specializes in reference books. The book gives children and other interested parties a glimpse into the Disney villains, ranging from the Evil Queen to Hades, providing information about their evil schemes, their lairs, and even their lackeys.

September 5, 2001 – The Reality Show The Amazing Race Premieres on CBS

On September 5, 2001, the reality adventure game show The Amazing Race premiered on CBS. A joint production between Disney-owned Touchstone Television and CBS productions, the show featured 11 teams of two people, ranging from couples to coworkers, racing around the world to win a $1 million prize. The show has won several Emmy awards for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The show is hosted by New Zealand television personality Phil Keoghan.

September 4, 2001 – The Magic Lamp Theater Opens in Tokyo DisneySea

On September 4, 2001, the Magic Lamp Theater opened in Tokyo DisneySea in the Arabian Coast area. The attraction features the popular character Genie from the Disney animated feature Aladdin. The theater opens with a special presentation by the snake Bakeet, who explains to the audience the significance of the magical lamp, and how Genie ended up as the magician Shaban’s partner, though Shaban locks Genie away to be seen as the best magician in the world. Guests then go into the theater to see a live show featuring Shaban and his assistant Aseem, though Shaban is failing at his magic. Aseem then unlocks the Genie, which leads to a combination live show and 3D film with magical misadventures.

September 3, 2009 – The Disney Wonder Rescues a Man Overboard

On September 3, 2009, the Disney Wonder rescued a man from the Atlantic Ocean near Florida at around 12:45 am. The 34-year-old man had jumped overboard from a Carnival Cruise Line ship after allegedly arguing with a woman, and the nearby Disney Wonder diverted its course to rescue him. A Disney rescue boat was then sent to retrieve the man, who had been treading water for about an hour, and brought him back to the Disney Wonder. The cruise ship brought him back to Port Canaveral, where he was taken to a hospital for a physical and mental evaluation.

September 2, 1987 – The Frontierland Shop Westward Ho Trading Co. Opens in Disneyland

“Wheel your wagon over to this rustic Frontierland trading post where pins are WANTED!”

On September 2, 1987, the specialty store Westward Ho Trading Co. opened in Disneyland’s Frontierland. Replacing the former Frontier Trading Post, this store caters to Disney pin collectors, selling a variety of pins, ranging from general to limited edition, as well as pin accessories, Vinylmation, and other park collectibles.

On September 1, 1998, the compilation album Disney’s Greatest Pop Hits: A Decade of Radio Singles was released through Walt Disney Records. The album features songs from Disney features, with most of them played during the film credits and released on the radio as promotional singles. Artists featured on this album included Elton John, Vanessa Williams, and Donna Summer.

August 31, 2009 – The Tequila Bar La Cava del Tequila Opens in Epcot

“Explore the heritage and tradition of tequila-making with tasty tequilas and mouthwatering margaritas at La Cava del Tequila in the Mexico pavilion at Epcot.”

On August 31, 2009, the tequila bar La Cava del Tequila opened in the Mexico Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase. The bar hosts over 200 types of tequila, along with several types of Mexican beer and wine. Guests can also indulge in some light snacks while sampling a particular tequila of interest, or trying a tequila flight.

August 30, 1943 – Walt Disney is Awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle

On August 30, 1943, Walt Disney, along with MGM Studios co-founder Louis B. Mayer, was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest honor. Disney received the award from Mexican president Manuel Ávila Camacho, honoring Disney’s efforts to create a strong relationship with Mexico through the Good Neighbor Program. Through this program, Walt and a group of animators, known as “El Grupo,” traveled through South America to research the countries and create animated features and short films. One such output was the film The Three Caballeros, which featured Mexican rooster Panchito as a lead character. This film was the beginning of a long relationship the Disney Studios had with Mexico.

August 29, 1989 – Disney Announces Agreement to Acquire Muppets


“I have enjoyed running my own company, but now I am really excited about joining forces with Michael Eisner and the Disney organization and finding out how much more we can accomplish together for our audiences all over the world.”

On August 29, 1989, the Walt Disney Company announced that they had started negotiations with Henson Associates Inc. to acquire the Muppets. Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, was working with Disney at the time on the new Muppet*Vision 3D attraction when the deal was discussed; under this deal, Henson would become a consultant to Disney to help develop special media pieces, such as television specials and movies. The terms of the deal were exclusive only to the Muppets and did not include characters from the Sesame Street series. Unfortunately, this deal would fall through in December of 1990, after problems arose with estate tax of Henson’s estate after his untimely passing. The merger was reopened and finally followed through in 2004.

August 28, 2003 – The Live Show The Golden Mickeys Premieres on the Disney Cruise Line

“The Golden Mickeys are tonight!”

On August 28, 2003, the live show The Golden Mickeys began performances on the Disney Cruise Line ship Disney Wonder. The show’s premise is that of an awards show, where the titular award is handed out to various Disney characters in specialized categories, including Heroism and Romance. Characters come from such films as Tarzan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Tangled. The show is hosted by a reluctant crew member, who has to take over the duties when the real master of ceremonies surprisingly doesn’t show. The show has been performed on the Disney Magic (from 2003 until 2010) and the Disney Dream (beginning in 2011); a version of the show was also performed in Hong Kong Disneyland starting in 2005.
