August 7, 2015 – The Legacy Collection: Pocahontas is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?”

On August 7, 2015, the eleventh entry in Walt Disney Records’ Legacy Collection, featuring the music from the Disney animated feature film Pocahontas, was released. This release was done to coincide with the film’s 20th anniversary, and featured two discs: disc one featured the official score and songs from the film; disc two featured demos, songs cut from the film, and the pop versions of “If I Never Knew You” and “Colors of the Wind.” As with the other Legacy Collection releases, the album comes with special art and liner notes about the film and its soundtrack.

August 6, 2013 – The Soundtrack to the Animated Feature Planes is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“If a postal truck can plow the snow, then a crop duster can race.”

On August 6, 2013, the soundtrack for the Disney animated feature Planes was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack featured a score by Mark Mancina, as well as five songs: “Nothing Can Stop Me Now” by Mark Holman, “You Don’t Stop – NYC” by Chris Classic and Alana D,  “Fly” by Jon Stevens, “Love Machine” by Carlos Alazraqui and Antonio Sol, and “Ein Crop Duster Can Race” by Dave Wittenberg.

August 5, 2000 – The Port Orleans Resort Restaurant Bonfamille’s Café Closes

“Bonfamille’s Café is Port Orleans’ charming courtyard restaurant café established in the early 1900s by the Bonfamille family where visitors are invited to sample soft of the best of Port Orleans’ cuisine.”

On August 5, 2000, the resort restaurant Bonfamille’s Café closed in Disney’s Port Orleans Resort in Walt Disney World.  This full-service restaurant opened on May 17, 1991 when Port Orleans Resort opened (which eventually became Port Orleans French Quarter), with Boatwright’s Dining Hall serving the Dixie Landings Resort (now known as Port Orleans Riverside). The restaurant featured Southern fishes, such as Bayou Crawfish Pasta, Chicken ‘n’ Sausage Creole, and Jambalaya.

August 4, 2017 – The Legacy Collection: Robin Hood is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Reminiscing this and that and having such a good time, oo-de-lally oo-de-lally golly what a day.”

On August 4, 2017, the 13th entry in Walt Disney Records’ Legacy Collection, featuring the music from the Disney animated feature film Robin Hood, was released. This was the first time that the full score of the film was released on an album, and also includes five demos and the tracks from the 1974 album Let’s Hear it for Robin Hood. The first disc features the entire score and songs from the film, totaling 28 tracks. As with the other Legacy Collection releases, the album comes with special art and liner notes about the film and its soundtrack.

August 3, 1933 – The First Mickey Mouse Watch is Introduced

On August 3, 1933, the first Mickey Mouse watches were introduced for sale by the Ingersoll-Waterbury Clock Company at the low cost of $3.25 (about $64 today, adjusted for 2019 inflation). This price would eventually be lowered to about $2.95. The watch was a stroke of genius for both Ingersoll-Waterbury and Disney, with merchandising genius Kay Kamen inking a deal between the two and starting a lucrative partnership for both (and kick off the beginning of Disney’s merchandise empire). This watch also saved both companies from bankruptcy.

August 2, 2011 – The Tribute Album Wish Upon a Star: A Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney is Released

On August 2, 2011, the tribute album by classical violinist Jenny Oaks Baker, titled When You Wish Upon a Star: A Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney was released through Shadow Mountain Records. The album contains classical interpretations of classic Disney songs ranging from “When You Wish Upon a Star” to “God Help the Outcasts.”

August 1, 1997 – Panchito’s Gifts and Sundries Opens in Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

“Chase down Disney souvenirs, native crafts, and more at this Three Caballeros-themed store named for the Mexican charro rooster.”

On August 1, 1997, the gift shop and general goods store Panchito’s Gifts and Sundries opened in Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort. Named for the character from Saludos Amigos, the store features a variety of Disney apparel, pins, and general snacks and amenities.

July 31, 2012 – The Restaurant Bistro de Paris Closes in Epcot’s France Pavilion

“Gourmet restaurant located at the 2nd floor.”

On July 31, 2012, after almost 30 years of operations, the restaurant Bistro de Paris closed. Open on June 3, 1984 in the France Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase, it was originally created due to the success and demand for reservations for Les Chefs de France, and was located in the upstairs area of the restaurant. It specialized in gourmet French cuisine, featuring such dishes as filet mignon and crème brulee. After it closed, it was renovated and reopened in December of 2012 as Monsieur Paul.

July 30, 1973 – Time Magazine Posts Article “Disney After Walt is a Family Affair.”

“The financial fellows think we’re going to fall on our faces without Walt…well, we’re going to fool them.”

On July 30, 1973, Time Magazine published its latest issue, featuring an article entitled “Disney After Walt is a Family Affair.” After Walt passed away in 1966, there were serious worries about how the company could survive. The article interview Roy O. Disney and talks about how the company managed to survive and thrive in the years since Walt’s death.

July 29, 2000 – Disney Celebrates First Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

On July 29, 2000, to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the popular roller coaster Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Disney created a guitar in the parking lot of Disney-MGM Studios Park out of 80 Corvettes, the signature car of the attraction. Using red, white, black, and silver cars, the formation resembled that of the Stratocaster, the guitar that covers the front of the attraction.
