October 25, 1985 – Mickey’s Character Shop Opens in Walt Disney World’s Disney Village Marketplace

On October 25, 1985, the merchandise store Mickey’s Character Shop opened in the Disney Village Marketplace, Walt Disney World’s precursor to Downtown Disney. At the time, it was the largest Disney merchandise store in the park, and was originally founded as the only place that was devoted to Disney merchandise in the whole of the Village Marketplace. The store was also known for its large mechanical airship, which featured several Disney characters including Mickey, Donald, and Figment. Once World of Disney’s construction was completed, Mickey’s Character Shop was closed on October 2, 1996.

October 22, 1979 – Walt Disney World Welcomes 100,000,000th Guest

On October 22, 1979, Walt Disney World welcomed Kurt Miller, the park’s 100,000,000th guest. This was not only extraordinary as the park had only been open eight years, but that by 1976, only three years earlier, the 50,000,000th guest had been welcomed. By 1979, only Magic Kingdom; Disney’s River Country, the park’s first Water Park; and Discovery Island, a place where guests could observe wildlife, were the only parks open. The lucky guest received a lifetime pass to the park from Mickey Mouse and then Walt Disney World Vice President Bob Allen.

October 21, 2004 – Hong Kong Disneyland Names First Ambassador

On October 21, 2004, Hong Kong Disneyland named Angela To as its first park ambassador. The tradition of park ambassadors began in 1965 with Julie Reihm for Disneyland Park, and the ambassador travels to and participates in special events, including parades and interviews. The ambassadors also attend a special training in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. To would serve as the ambassador and be present as Hong Kong Disneyland officially opened on September 12, 2005.

October 20, 2008 – The Blue Sky Cellar Preview Center Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Step into the minds of Walt Disney Imagineers to see how “blue-sky” ideas turn into reality—from concept to completion.”

On October 20, 2008, the preview center Blue Sky Cellar officially opened in Disney California Adventure. Replacing the Seasons of the Vine Theater, the area served as a place where Imagineers could show sketches and models depicting proposed and upcoming attractions; attractions presented there have included Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Silly Symphony Swings, World of Color, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Goofy’s Sky School, Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Fantasy Faire, Mickey & the Magical Map, Market House, and Pixar Pier. Although it originally closed on September 29, 2013, it was reopened on April 13, 2018, as it was used to showcase the plans for what would become Pixar Pier.

October 19, 1989 – The Attraction Cranium Command Opens in Epcot’s Future World

“Your job, if you can cut it, is to run the most sophisticated information system ever devised.”

On October 19, 1989, the attraction Cranium Command opened as part of the Wonders of Life pavilion in Epcot’s Future World. Like many attractions within Epcot, this was an educational attraction that taught guests about how the brain worked. Guests sit in an auditorium that acts as a “control center” for the brain of a 12-year-old boy named Bobby, and observe as rookie Buzzy is given the controls by General Knowledge. The film was directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, who would go on to direct Beauty and the Beast, and starred George Wendt, Dana Carvey, Charles Grodin, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Kevin Nealon. The attraction closed on January 1, 2007.

October 14, 2010 – Duffy the Disney Bear Makes Official Debut in American Disney Parks

“He’s Mickey’s very own teddy bear…made with love by Minnie herself.”

On October 14, 2010, the character of Duffy the Disney Bear made his official debut in the North American Disney Parks, particularly Epcot in Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure. A popular character in Tokyo DisneySea, the character was introduced as Mickey’s special bear given to him by Minnie before he set off on a long adventure; the bear originated in Wat Disney World’s Once Upon a Toy as a Disney-themed teddy bear, but was given a backstory when he was brought over to Japan. Duffy, in his character meet-and-greets, wears a special sailor suit. In addition to being added to parks as a meet-and-greet and in merchandise, Duffy got a special program in Epcot where younger guests could take a Duffy mask from country to country, where they could learn about the countries in the World Showcase and earn special Duffy stamps.

October 12, 2017 -The Villages Nature Paris Project is Unveiled

“Explore all five immersive worlds and the unforgettable experiences they promise.”

On October 12, 2017, the joint project between Euro Disney and Pierre & Vacances-Center Parcs, known as Villages Nature Paris, was announced and opened. Located minutes from Disneyland Paris, this project was years in the making, and provides guests with an immersive, natural experience in five areas: the water park Aqualagon, BelleVie Farm, the five-acre Extraordinary Gardens, the Lakeside Promenade, and the Forest of Legends. The areas provide a variety of activities, including zip-lining, breadmaking, and wine tasting. The idea of the Villages Nature Paris was to promote what is known as “sustainable tourism,” as the 300-acre area seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, and protect the wildlife around it, through a variety of green methods.

October 11, 2003 – The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Attraction Closes

“A world with so many eager customers is always worth our greatest effort.”

On October 11, 2003, the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter attraction officially closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. A joint attraction between Disney and George Lucas that opened on June 20, 1995, it featured the story of an alien that was accidentally transported into the X-S Tech laboratory. A dark sci-fi themed interactive sensory adventure, it featured binaural sound and other effects to enhance what came to be known as a “4D” experience. The attraction was replaced with Stitch’s Great Escape!, which used a majority of ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter’s technology.

October 10, 2002 – The Walt Disney Company and Frito-Lay Announce Multi-Year Partnership

“Our presence at Disney properties is a new channel for us to offer a wide variety of fun snacks catering to consumers’ needs.” – Frito-Lay President and CEO Al Bru

On October 10, 2002, it was announced in a press release that the Walt Disney Company and Frito-Lay had entered into a multi-year agreement where Frito-Lay products would be featured in Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks. Not only would Frito-Lay snacks, such as Doritos and Lay’s chips, be sold in the parks’ restaurants and snack kiosks, but Frito-Lay would also sponsor several attractions, such as the California Screamin’ roller coaster in Disney California Adventure.

October 8, 2010 – The ElecTRONica Promotion Event Kicks Off in Disney California Adventure

“This will be a cool opportunity to peek inside the world of this movie, and it’s available only to visitors of Disney California Adventure park.”

On October 8, 2010, as part of the promotions for the live action feature film Tron: Legacy, the event ElecTRONica kicked off within Disney California Adventure park. The event featured a nighttime dance party; a bar called End of the Line Club; and Flynn’s Arcade, which featured a variety of arcade games from the 1980s. The dance party also featured a variety of live performers amidst the glowing accessories and laser displays. The event ended on April 15, 2012, and was replaced by the Mad T Party.
