April 2, 2007 – The Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

“Discover the power of laughter from the original Monsters of Comedy during a hilarious interactive show.”

On April 2, 2007, the interactive attraction Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor opened in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland area. The attraction, featuring characters from the Pixar films Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, takes guests into a comedy club in the heart of Monstropolis, where character Mike has duties as the M.C. Guests are implored to laugh at the jokes in order to build up enough power to open the doors at the end of the show. Using special technology, the comedians interact with the audience, including choosing one audience member to be “that guy,” the butt of every joke. While waiting for the show to begin, guests are also asked to provide their own jokes through text messages that may be used during one of the show’s acts.

March 31, 2001 – The Animal Kingdom Lodge Opens for Annual Passholders

“Step into the heart of Africa at this magnificent Resort hotel.”

On March 31, 2001, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge opened for a special open house exclusively for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders, weeks before its official opening on April 16. The hotel, as do many other attractions and resorts, has an intriguing backstory: the lodge is based on a traditional African kraal, and was built on the top of an extinct volcano. Keeping with the theme of the park, the resort has many animals inhabiting the nearby savannah plains, including wildebeest and giraffes. The hotel has almost 1,300 rooms in six stories, and three restaurants: Jiko, Boma, and Mara.

March 27, 2009 – The Celebrate! A Street Party Parade Begins in Disneyland

On March 27, 2009, the Celebrate! A Street Party daytime parade began its run in Disneyland. The parade, added for the “What Will You Celebrate” festivities of 2009, started from the it’s a small world attraction and wandered down toward Main Street. There were three special “celebration zones” for guests to be in where the parade would stop and entertain guests with a special dance to the songs chosen for the show. Songs included “I Love Rock and Roll,” “I Wanna Be Like You,” and “Friend Like Me,” as well as an original son g for the show, “Celebrate You,” played at the end of the show. Several Disney characters were on hand for the parade, including a special appearance of Chip and Dale’s paramour, Clarice.

March 22, 2005 – The Updated Soundtrack to the Animated Series Kim Possible is Released

On March 22, 2005, the soundtrack to the hit animated series Kim Possible was re-released through Walt Disney Records. An updated version of the original 2003 album, this version contained remixes of the theme song “Call Me, Beep Me! (The Kim Possible Song)” by Christina Milian, as well as a combination of songs from and inspired by the show. The artists featured include Disney artist (and voice of title character) Christy Carlson Romano, pop artist Aaron Carter, and band Smash Mouth.

March 15, 2006 – High School Musical is the First Film Released on iTunes

“First came the songs, then music videos and TV shows, and now Apple may be bringing movies to your home computer or video iPod.”

On March 15, 2006, Apple announced that Disney Channel’s hit film High School Musical would be iTunes’ first available feature-length movie. The movie, available for $9.99, was the first step in a grand-scale iTunes Movie service, though some critics saw the move as a vehicle for Apple and Disney to test joint projects. Disney, at the time, admitted that the TV movie would be the only release from the studio on the digital format.

March 14, 2000 – The Tribute Album Color, Rhythm and Magic: Favorites from Disney Classics is Released

On March 14, 2000, the tribute album Color, Rhythm and Magic: Favorites from Disney Classics was released through Varèse Sarabande records. The album, recorded by Earl Rose, takes Disney songs and composes them in a light jazz format with piano, percussion, and violin, among other instruments. It features classics ranging from “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” to “Someday” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

March 13, 2005 – Robert A. Iger Named CEO of the Walt Disney Company

On March 13, 2005, the Walt Disney Company Board of Executives unanimously voted to elect Robert A. Iger as the new Chief Executive Office of the company. His tenure would become effective on September 30 of that year, after previous CEO Michael D. Eisner stepped down. The lengthy and highly detailed selection process began in late 2004; Iger previously served as the chairman of ABC Group, where he helped facilitate the merger between ABC and the Disney Company. Iger also served as the president of Walt Disney International, focusing on the Disney name in Europe, Asia-Pacific Region, and Latin America. He originally joined the company in 1996, when Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC, where Iger was serving as President and COO.

March 10, 2009 – The 70th Anniversary Edition of Pinocchio is Released on Blu-ray and DVD

On March 10, 2009, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the film, the Platinum Edition of Pinocchio was released on Blu-ray and DVD. The film was given a special digital restoration, and the release included several special featurettes, including a behind-the-scenes making of feature, a look at Walt Disney’s artistic review process, and several key pieces of background and concept art.

March 8, 2008 – A Zebra is Born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

On March 8, 2008, the newest addition to Disney’s Animal Kingdom was born. The male Hartmann’s mountain zebra is the first of its kind born in Animal Kingdom and was named Kidani, and was named after the newest expansion to the Animal Kingdom Villas, named Kidani Village. Kidani was born through the collaboration work between Disney and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Population Management Plan’s conservation efforts.

March 7, 2008 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Bob Gurr is Honored With a Window on Disneyland’s Main Street

On March 7, 2008, before the park opened, Imagineer and Disney Legend Bob Gurr was honored with a window on Disneyland’s Main Street, and honor specially saved for those who had an impact on the creation and upkeep of the park. Many of Gurr’s coworkers and friends were in attendance to honor the man who helped design the old-time feel of Main Street, the Magic Skyway, and the design of the first audio-animatronic figure, President Lincoln. The window itself pays homage to Gurr’s work with Disneyland vehicles, as it calls him the “design impresario” for the “Meteor Cycle Company.”
