September 27, 1991 – The Video Simply Mad About the Mouse is Released

“I’ll be safe and you’ll be sorry when the wolf comes through your door.”

On September 27, 1991, the music video Simply Mad About the Mouse was released on home video. This musical compilation featured clips from Disney movies and short films, along with some new animation for this compilation, with updated pieces of Disney music from artists such as Billy Joel, Harry Connick Jr., and LL Cool J. Songs from the music video range from Pinocchio’s “When You Wish Upon a Star” to “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid. An album of the music from the music video was released on October 1, 1991.

September 26, 1991 – The Restaurant Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“Once upon a time, a young girl from a small Sicilian village moved from Hollywood to become a star.”

On September 26, 1991, the casual dining restaurant Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano opened in Disney-MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios) in Walt Disney World. To fit with the theme of the glamor of Hollywood, the backstory of the restaurant is that a young girl came to Hollywood to make it big, but ended up creating a restaurant that caught the attention of the top industry insiders. The restaurant features Italian-themed favorites such as fried calamari, four-cheese baked macaroni, and tiramisu.

September 22, 1991 – The Surprise Celebration Parade Kicks Off in Walt Disney World

“One of 20 spectacular new reasons to visit this year!”

On September 22, 1991, the Surprise Celebration Parade began its run in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Thrown to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Walt Disney World, the parade featured 40-feet-tall character balloons that celebrated different festivals from around the world. The parade ran until June 4, 1994, and was followed by the Mickey Mania Parade.

September 19, 1992 – The Animated Series Raw Toonage Premieres on CBS

On September 19, 1992, the animated series Raw Toonage premiered on CBS. The show was a packaged animation block featuring the early versions of Bonkers and Marsupilami. The show also featured a parody music video segment called “Totally Tasteless Video.” Although nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards (Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program and Outstanding Music Direction and Composition), the series only lasted 12 episodes. It featured Jim Cummings as Bonkers, Norman, and Maurice, Jeff Bennett as Jitters, Rodger Bumpass as Grumbles, Nancy Cartwright as Fawn Deer, and Steve Mackall as Marsupilami.

September 16, 1997 – The Soundtrack for The Jungle Book is Reissued Through Walt Disney Records

“That’s why a bear can rest at ease with just the bare necessities of life.”

On September 16, 1997, the soundtrack for the animated feature film The Jungle Book was reissued through Walt Disney Records. Along with the songs and score from the film, the reissue also includes an interview with the Sherman Brothers, demo versions of songs not used in the final version of the film, and two songs that were originally featured on the album’s original release in 1969.

September 15, 1997 – The Candy Cauldron Opens in Downtown Disney

“Satisfy your sweet tooth and watch as mouthwatering treats are made in our show kitchen at Disney Springs West Side.”

On September 15, 1997, the specialty store The Candy Cauldron opened in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney area (now known as Disney Springs). Here, guests can purchase pre-made sweet treats while watching kitchen artisans create intricately designed candy apples and other treats in the show kitchen.

September 14, 1998 – The Candy Store Sweet Spells Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On September 14, 1998, the specialty store Sweet Spells opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park, located in Walt Disney World. The store sells a variety of sweet treats, including rice krispie treats, fudge, and gourmet apples. The store also sells specialty treats for various holiday seasons, particularly Halloween and Christmas.

On September 1, 1998, the compilation album Disney’s Greatest Pop Hits: A Decade of Radio Singles was released through Walt Disney Records. The album features songs from Disney features, with most of them played during the film credits and released on the radio as promotional singles. Artists featured on this album included Elton John, Vanessa Williams, and Donna Summer.

August 21, 1995 – The PeopleMover Attraction Closes

“Ride tomorrow’s transportation…today!”

On August 21, 1995, the PeopleMover attraction in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland closed. Originally opening in 1967, and given major updates in 1977 and 1982 (with the latter promoting the movie Tron), the attraction was eventually closed as it seemed no longer an innovative attraction keeping with Tomorrowland’s theme of the future. A similar attraction was opened in Walt Disney World in 1975, originally called the WEDway PeopleMover (renamed to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority in 1994). The Disneyland attraction’s technology was replicated in the Houston International Airport for their PeopleMover.

August 16, 1999 – The Game Show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Premieres on ABC

“Starting tonight, and every night for the next two weeks, join us from New York City as we play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire!”

On August 16, 1999, the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire premiered on ABC, running every night for two weeks. The show, based on an British game show, was hosted by Regis Philbin and became a nationwide craze, with as many as 15 million viewers watching the show after the show’s first week. This show also spawned a Disney park attraction in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, with both opening in 2001. The success of the show helped ABC fix its flagging spot as one of the top three networks. The show was brought back November 7 through November 21, and then brought back as a prime-time series on June 27, 2002.
