October 20, 2008 – The Blue Sky Cellar Preview Center Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Step into the minds of Walt Disney Imagineers to see how “blue-sky” ideas turn into reality—from concept to completion.”

On October 20, 2008, the preview center Blue Sky Cellar officially opened in Disney California Adventure. Replacing the Seasons of the Vine Theater, the area served as a place where Imagineers could show sketches and models depicting proposed and upcoming attractions; attractions presented there have included Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Silly Symphony Swings, World of Color, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Goofy’s Sky School, Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Fantasy Faire, Mickey & the Magical Map, Market House, and Pixar Pier. Although it originally closed on September 29, 2013, it was reopened on April 13, 2018, as it was used to showcase the plans for what would become Pixar Pier.

October 19, 1989 – The Attraction Cranium Command Opens in Epcot’s Future World

“Your job, if you can cut it, is to run the most sophisticated information system ever devised.”

On October 19, 1989, the attraction Cranium Command opened as part of the Wonders of Life pavilion in Epcot’s Future World. Like many attractions within Epcot, this was an educational attraction that taught guests about how the brain worked. Guests sit in an auditorium that acts as a “control center” for the brain of a 12-year-old boy named Bobby, and observe as rookie Buzzy is given the controls by General Knowledge. The film was directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, who would go on to direct Beauty and the Beast, and starred George Wendt, Dana Carvey, Charles Grodin, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Kevin Nealon. The attraction closed on January 1, 2007.

October 18, 2008 – Radio Disney Hosts “Planet Premiere” of High School Musical 3: Senior Year Soundtrack

“This is the last chance to make our mark, history will know who we are.”

On October 18,2008, Radio Disney held what they called the “planet premiere” of the soundtrack for the upcoming feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year, with the soundtrack being released in physical copy three days later. Radio Disney not only played the soundtrack in its entirety, but also interviewed the cast members of the film.

October 17, 2017 – The 30th Anniversary Screening of The Brave Little Toaster Premieres

On October 17, 2017, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the animated film The Brave Little Toaster, a special screening was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Upon purchasing a ticket, guests were also given a variety of gifts depending on ticket level, with every guest at least leaving with an original sketch and an animation cel. There was also a Q&A session with a variety of folks involved in the film, including the movie’s director, Jerry Rees, who help write the screenplay with Joe Ranft; Deanna Oliver, the voice of Toaster; composer and music arranger David Newman, and animator Kevin Lima. Producer Donald Kushner was also on hand to sell a variety of original artwork of the film from his personal collection.

October 16, 1998 – Twenty-One New Inductees Are Named Disney Legends

“That’s a whole lot of legends!”

On October 16, 1998, twenty-one new Disney Legends were honored in a special ceremony at the new Disney Legends Plaza at the Walt Disney Studios. The plaza was also dedicated on this day, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. The honorees were an eclectic mix of those individuals who had a lasting impact on the history and success of the Walt Disney Company, and ranged from actors to executives. Among those honored were Disney Company managing director for England and Europe, Cyril James; company treasurer, Don Escen; former chairman of the Oriental Land Company, Masatomo Takahashi; film editor, Lloyd Richardson; first Alice actress, Virginia Davis; animator Bill Tytla; animator and director Wilfred Jackson; actress Kathryn Beaumont; animator and director Ben Sharpsteen; director, writer, producer, and narrator Jim Algar; merchandising executive Kay Kamen; former president of Walt Disney Enterprises of Japan, Matsuo Yokoyama; documentary film makers Al and Elma Milotte; actress Gynis Johns; actress Hayley Mills; actor Kurt Russell; documentary film maker Paul Kenworthy; director and producer Larry Lansburgh; composer Buddy Baker; film editor Norman “Stormy” Palmer; and actor Dick Van Dyke. Of those honored, James, Tytla, Jackson, Sharpsteen, Algar, Kamen, and the Milottes were honored posthumously.

October 15, 2002 – Hilary Duff’s Debut Album Santa Claus Lane is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Walk in this Christmas down Santa Claus Lane, no need to wonder, no need to explain.”

On October 15, 2002, the debut album of Disney Channel star Hilary Duff was released through Walt Disney Records. A Christmas album, the album features re-recordings of Christmas standards, such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Last Christmas,” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The titular song is the only original song on the album, written by producer Matthew Gerrard, Charlie Midnight, Bridget Benenate, and Jay Landers. The album debuted at number 154 on the Billboard 200, and peaked at the number 2 position on the Top Heatseekers and Top Kid Album charts.

October 14, 2010 – Duffy the Disney Bear Makes Official Debut in American Disney Parks

“He’s Mickey’s very own teddy bear…made with love by Minnie herself.”

On October 14, 2010, the character of Duffy the Disney Bear made his official debut in the North American Disney Parks, particularly Epcot in Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure. A popular character in Tokyo DisneySea, the character was introduced as Mickey’s special bear given to him by Minnie before he set off on a long adventure; the bear originated in Wat Disney World’s Once Upon a Toy as a Disney-themed teddy bear, but was given a backstory when he was brought over to Japan. Duffy, in his character meet-and-greets, wears a special sailor suit. In addition to being added to parks as a meet-and-greet and in merchandise, Duffy got a special program in Epcot where younger guests could take a Duffy mask from country to country, where they could learn about the countries in the World Showcase and earn special Duffy stamps.

October 13, 1993 – The Nightmare Before Christmas has Initial Release in New York City

“In this town, we call home, everyone hail to the pumpkin song.”

On October 13, 1993, the Touchstone animated feature The Nightmare Before Christmas premiered in New York City. Based on the poem and associated sketches by filmmaker Tim Burton, the stop-motion animated film was brought to life by director Henry Sellick and composer Danny Elfman. The film would go on to be released nationwide on October 22, 1993. Considered a sleeper hit of 1993 (and becoming the 27th highest-grossing movie of the year), the film went on to be a cult classic, and being released multiple times to theaters, including a special 3D edition in limited release during the fall season.

October 12, 2017 -The Villages Nature Paris Project is Unveiled

“Explore all five immersive worlds and the unforgettable experiences they promise.”

On October 12, 2017, the joint project between Euro Disney and Pierre & Vacances-Center Parcs, known as Villages Nature Paris, was announced and opened. Located minutes from Disneyland Paris, this project was years in the making, and provides guests with an immersive, natural experience in five areas: the water park Aqualagon, BelleVie Farm, the five-acre Extraordinary Gardens, the Lakeside Promenade, and the Forest of Legends. The areas provide a variety of activities, including zip-lining, breadmaking, and wine tasting. The idea of the Villages Nature Paris was to promote what is known as “sustainable tourism,” as the 300-acre area seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, and protect the wildlife around it, through a variety of green methods.

October 11, 2003 – The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Attraction Closes

“A world with so many eager customers is always worth our greatest effort.”

On October 11, 2003, the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter attraction officially closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. A joint attraction between Disney and George Lucas that opened on June 20, 1995, it featured the story of an alien that was accidentally transported into the X-S Tech laboratory. A dark sci-fi themed interactive sensory adventure, it featured binaural sound and other effects to enhance what came to be known as a “4D” experience. The attraction was replaced with Stitch’s Great Escape!, which used a majority of ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter’s technology.
