“And never don’t you two come back!”

On May 10, 1946, the Pluto short film In Dutch was released to theaters. It was directed by Charles Nichols, with story by Harry Reeves and Jesse Marsh.

Pluto is delivering milk in a small Dutch town, when he arrives at the mayor’s house, home of Dinah, Pluto’s sweetheart. He treats her to a small bowl of milk, though he gets distracted and accidentally pours out too much. He tries to make it up to her using tulips, which works, as Dinah kisses him. The two accidentally set off the dike alarm, warning the townspeople of a hole in the dike, and Pluto gets berated by the whole town. Pluto and Dinah are kicked out of town, but as they walk away, they realize that there really is a problem with the dike. Pluto rushes back to town to pull the alarm, but the townspeople think it’s another false alarm. Pluto then tricks the townspeople to follow him to the scene of the problem, where Dinah is dangerously close to drowning. The townspeople find the pair and realize that the two are heroes, and invite them back to town, where Dinah continues to help Pluto with his milk rounds.

ANT_1

“Yeah, because, we’re studying Pygmalion in English class, and it’s easier if we act it out. See, he’s Professor Higgins, and she’s Eliza Doolittle. Eliza, do a little.”

On May 6, 2011, the Disney Channel Original Series A.N.T. Farm premiered. The series centers around a group of child prodigies in a class called the Advanced Natural Talents (A.N.T.). The series had 4.4 million viewers on its premiere, and has received several positive reviews. The series lasted three seasons with 62 episodes. It was created by Dan Signer, and starred China Anne McClain as Chyna Parks, Sierra McCormick as Olive Doyle, Jake Short as Fletcher Quimby, Stefanie Scott as Lexi Reed, Carlon Jeffery as Cameron Parks, and Aedin Mincks as Angus Chestnut.

The first episode, “TransplANTed,” begins at Webster High, where musical prodigy Chyna Parks arrives, though her brother Cameron is less than thrilled that they will attend the same school. She arrives at the A.N.T. room, for those students with Advanced Natural Talents. She meets Gibson, who acts as the tutor and counselor of the A.N.T. Farm, as it is called, where she meets other kids as talented as she is, though in very different ways. She meets classmates Olive and Fletcher, with Fletcher falling for Chyna at first sight. She also meets Lexi, the resident Queen Bee, who delights in torturing Chyna until Chyna reveals her musical talents. Chyna overhears Lexi talking about a party, and decides to crash it with Olivia and Fletcher. Unfortunately, Chyna’s father comes home and spoils their plans to sneak out that night, until Fletcher makes wax doubles of the three. They arrive at the party, and end up having a good time, though Lexi finds every reason to embarrass her, as does Cameron. Unbeknownst to Chyna, her father and Gibson have gone to her room to check on her, finding her wax double melted. At the party, Olive drinks a powerful energy drink and bumps into Fletcher, who in turn destroys the stereo. While everyone thinks the party is ruined, Chyna manages to save the day with her musical talent. Chyna’s father arrives at the party and breaks it up, taking Chyna in the back of his squad car. The next day at school, Olive and Fletcher think Chyna’s father has pulled her out of school, but they are relieved to find her there, especially since the arrival of Chyna’s father gave the A.N.T.s some newfound “street cred.”
