February 25, 2012 – A Time Capsule is Buried in Disney California Adventure Park

On February 25, 2012, Walt Disney Imagineers and Disney cast members buried a special time capsule on Buena Vista Street in Disney’s California Adventure Park. The capsule, which is to be opened in 2037, featured several interesting items, including PhotoPass Cards, a Blackberry, and a Duffy bear. A special plaque was placed over the spot where the capsule was buried.

February 22, 2015 – Big Hero 6 Wins Academy Award for Best Animated Feature

On February 22, 2015, the 87th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Walt Disney Animation Studios walked away with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the movie Big Hero 6, giving the studio its second Academy Award in this category after the previous year’s win for Frozen. The film was the winner against such films as The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

February 20, 2013 – The IBM THINK Interactive Attraction Opens in Epcot

On February 20, 2013, in conjunction with National Engineers Week, the new attraction IBM THINK was unveiled in Epcot’s Innoventions West area. The interactive attraction aims to teach guests about the way the world can work alongside technological innovations. To also celebrate National Engineers week, IBM was on hand to provide nearby high school teachers and students with free STEM lesson plans on iPads and Android tablets.

February 19, 2010 – Official Reopening Date for Captain EO in Disneyland Announced

On February 19, 2010, the official reopening date for the Captain EO attraction was announced by Disney Parks, with the official date being February 23, 2010. The film was originally announced in late 2009 to be returning to Disneyland, but with no firm date set; more information about the release was announced in the February update. The film would return to the Tomorrowland Theatre with an updated 70mm print, along with acoustic updates that were made to the theatre since the film’s last showing in 1997.

February 14, 2013 – “A Celebration of True Love” Event is Held at Walt Disney World

“On February 14, you’ll have a special chance to re-commit your promise of love with your significant other during ‘A Celebration of True Love’ at Magic Kingdom Park.”

On February 14, 2013, as part of the Limited Time Magic promotions at the Disney Parks, a special event called “A Celebration of True Love” was held at Walt Disney World. Fifty couples gathered at the steps of Cinderella Castle to renew their vows and celebrate the magic of love and Disney. There was a special appearance by Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, along with their princes, as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, to help the couples celebrate with fireworks and heart-shaped confetti.

February 13, 2010 – The Animated Series Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil Premieres on Disney X D

KICK BUTTOWSKI - SUBURBAN DAREDEVIL - "If Books Could Kill/There will be Nachos" - Gunther accidently returns Kick's new book signed by his idol Billy Stumps to the library. When the librarian refuses to return it, Kick challenges her no-return policy and vows to get it back by any extreme means necessary. Meanwhile, Brad throws the party of the year while his parents are out of town and does everything in his power to keep Kick out, but Kick is determined to make it into the party and score some of Brad's famous nachos. This episode of "Kick Buttowski - Suburban Daredevil" airs SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13 (9:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD. (DISNEY XD) KICK BUTTOWSKI

On February 13, 2010, the animated series Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil premiered on Disney X D. The show was the channel’s fourth original series and first original animated series. The series is centered around kid Clarence “Kick” Buttowski and his aspiration to be the world’s best daredevil with the help of his best friend Gunther, and no help from his older brother Brad Buttowski. The series lasted for two seasons before its cancellation. The series was created by Sandro Corsaro, and starred Charlie Schlatter as Kick Buttowski, Matt L. Jones as Gunther, and Danny Cooksey as Brad Buttowski.

February 12, 2016 – Disney CEO Bob Iger is Named to the Toy Industry Hall of Fame

On February 12, 2016, the Toy Industry Association inducted the newest member of the Toy Industry Fall of Fame: CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger. Iger was added thanks to his contributions to the toy industry, as well as the “impact his work has had on the lives of children worldwide.” Iger was also recognized for growing the Disney portfolio with the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and creating new creative platforms for each of them. He was inducted in a special presentation at the 16th annual Toy of the Year Awards ceremony at the 113th North American International Toy Fair, which also celebrated the Toy Industry Association’s centennial.

February 5, 2015- Tom Staggs is Named Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company

On February 5, 2015, the Walt Disney and Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs was announced to be the new Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company. Staggs was chosen thanks to his track record in running the parks, his background in investment banking, and his ability to handle complex deals for the company, including the investment in the MagicBand system used in Walt Disney World. Staggs joined Disney in 1990 as the manager of strategic planning after working at Dain Bosworth and Morgan Stanley. He soon moved up the corporate ladder, being named a senior VP in 1995, and was shortly after named an executive VP and Chief Financial Officer. Although concerns arose around Staggs’ ability to handle the strategic management of a company as vast as Disney, his success with the Disneyland Shanghai project seemed to quell any doubts. However, Staggs stepped down from his position and left the company in 2016, after he was unable to secure a commitment that he would succeed Bob Iger after Iger’s retirement in 2018.

January 26, 2011 – The Disney Dream Sets Off on Maiden Voyage

On January 26, 2011, the third ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Dream, set off on its maiden voyage, a week after its christening. The ship, at the time, was the biggest in the fleet, with 1,250 staterooms, 14 decks, and a ship length of 1,115 feet. The maiden voyage had the Disney Dream traveling to Nassau, the Bahamas, and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

January 25, 2011 – Disney Scores 13 Academy Award Nominations

“Only a handful of sequels have ever been nominated so we really didn’t think the best picture nomination was in the cards for us. The fact that we did get nominated in that category makes us very, very proud.”

On January 25, 2011, the nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California. The Walt Disney Company managed to secure 13 nominations, with Toy Story 3 receiving five (Best Picture, Best Animated Feature Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Song, and Sound Editing), the Pixar short Day and Night receiving one (Best Animated Short Film), Tangled receiving one (Best Original Song), Alice in Wonderland receiving three (Achievement in Costume Design, Art Direction, and Achievement in Visual Effects), TRON: Legacy receiving one (Achievement in Sound Editing), Iron Man 2 receiving one (Achievement in Visual Effects), and The Tempest receiving one (Achievement in Costume Design). In the end, Disney would walk away with four: Best Animated Feature for Toy Story 3, Best Original Song for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3, and Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design for Alice in Wonderland.
