August 26, 2008 – StormStruck Opens in Epcot’s Innoventions Area

On August 26, 2008, in partnership with RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd., WeatherPredict Consulting Inc., Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Inc., and State Farm, the interactive attraction StormStruck opened in the Innoventions area of Walt Disney World’s Epcot Park. The attraction gives guests, through the use of mini-exhibits, a chance to learn how to protect themselves and their homes in certain catastrophic weather events. The attraction is scheduled to close on September 13, 2016.

August 23, 2004 – The Post Office in Marceline, Missouri, is Renamed the Walt Disney Post Office

On August 23, 2004, the post office in Marceline, Missouri (known officially as Walt’s hometown) was officially renamed the Walt Disney Post Office. The proposal for the renaming had been introduced in front of the House Committee on Government Reform on April 3, 2003, and after passing through several committees, it was approved by unanimous consent by the United States Senate on October 29, 2003. This is the only federal building to bear Walt’s name. The post office also has the distinction of being the spot where, in 1968, the Walt Disney commemorative stamp was released along with a ceremony featuring many of Walt’s family and admirers.

August 21, 2007 – The Muppet Mobile Labs Interactive Audio-Animatronic Premieres at Epcot

“Now, before we continue this conversation, let me just activate the Hob Knob.”

On August 21, 2007, almost six months after its California debut, the interactive audio-animatronic Muppet Mobile Lab made its debut in Walt Disney World’s Epcot park. Featuring the characters Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and assistant Beaker, the audio-animatronic went around the park freely, interacting with guests as they entertained the crowd with their best Muppet jokes and puns. The new feature was part of a test-run by the Disney Imagineers to create more characters that could interact with the guests as they mill about the various parks.

August 19, 2001 – The Timekeeper Attraction Reopens Seasonally

“For your safety, I’ve invented rails for you to lean on. I call them, ‘lean rails.’ Please do not sit on the lean rails because…they’re there to lean on.”

On August 19, 2001, the Tomorrowland attraction The Timekeeper was reopened, this time on a seasonal basis. The attraction, originally closed on April 29, 2001, was reopened while many other Tomorrowland attractions were undergoing refurbishments. The attraction opened during the late summer and stayed open through most of September, operating on this seasonal basis before it closed for good on February 26, 2006, after its final show on December 31, 2005.

August 17, 2006 – Meg Crofton Named President of Walt Disney World

On August 17, 2006, Meg Gilbert Crofton, a 27-year-veteran of the Walt Disney Company, was named to the key position of President of Walt Disney World. Crofton had held previous executive leadership positions in Sales, Operations, and Human Resources, holding the role of Executive Vice President of Human Resources for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts before this promotion. Crofton began her career with Disney in 1977, working at Vista-United Telecommunications. She left the company briefly to work for AT&T, but returned to Vista-United in 1981 to serve as the Operations Manager; three years later, she was named the General Manager of the Disney Inn. Among her many roles within the company, Crofton was the task force leader for hotel openings of ten of the resorts within Walt Disney World, and led the task force for the opening of Disneyland Resort Paris. Crofton was the fourth person to run the park as President, and the first woman named to the position.

August 16, 2005 – Into the Rush, the Debut Album by Aly & AJ, is Released Through Hollywood Records

On August 16, 2005, the debut album of recording artists Aly & AJ, titled Into the Rush, was released through Hollywood Records. The album featured several promotional singles, including two cover songs: “Do You Believe in Magic” originally by The Lovin’ Spoonful and “Walking on Sunshine” originally by Katrina and the Waves. The album received favorable reviews, and debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 36. A deluxe version of the album was released almost a year later with two more singles: “Rush” and “Chemicals React.” Combined sales of the album and the deluxe album made the album the 112th bestselling album in 2006.

August 15, 2006 – The Cheetah Girls 2 Soundtrack is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On August 15, 2006, the soundtrack to the Disney Channel Original Movie The Cheetah Girls 2 was released through Walt Disney Records. The album was a major success compared to its predecessor, debuting and peaking at number five on the Billboard 200, and peaking at number one on the Top Soundtrack Albums chart. The album would go on to be certified platinum by the RIAA after selling over 1.4 million copies. The album also spawned five singles: “The Party’s Just Begun,” “Strut,” “Step Up,” “Amigas Cheetahs,” and “Dance With Me.”

August 14, 2007 – The Soundtrack for High School Musical 2 is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On August 14, 2007, the soundtrack for the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical 2 was released through Walt Disney Records. The album peaked at number one on the digital iTunes and Amazon.com charts on its first week of release, and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, remaining there for four weeks. The album spawned four singles: “What Time is It?,” “I Don’t Dance,” “You Are the Music in Me,” and “Gotta Go My Own Way.” The album continued to chart in various countries, ranging from peak positions of number one to number 21. The album would eventually become the best-selling album of 2007.

August 12, 2005 – Disney Channel Star Christy Carlson Romano Visits the World of Disney Store in NYC

On August 12, 2005, Disney Channel Star of Even Stevens and the voice of the titular Kim Possible Christy Carlson Romano was on hand at the World of Disney Store in New York City to sign autographs and meet fans. 75 “InspEARations” statues of Mickey Mouse had been touring around the country this year, and nine, including one designed by Romano in the likeness of her Kim Possible character, were on display during her visit.

August 7, 2008 – The Art of Disney: Imagination Commemorative Stamps are Released

“With the help of some of Walt Disney’s famous character, these four stamps illustrate the theme of imagination.”

On August 7, 2008, the Postal Service issued the new stamp series The Art of Disney: Imagination at the Disneyland Resort, and made it available for nationwide purchase. The stamps, designed by artist David Pacheco, features four images from four Disney classics: One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, and Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie. This collection was the fifth one released by the U.S. Postal Service, with the others labeled as Friendship, Celebrations, Romance, and Magic. The stamps were available in packs of 20 for $13.95.
