August 7

August 7, 1992 – The Short Film Petal to the Metal is Released to Theaters

On August 7, 1992, the special short film Petal to the Metal premiered in theaters before the feature film 3 Ninjas. The short featured the character of Bonkers D. Bobcat, before he starred in his television show in 1993. It finds Bonkers, in an effort to keep his job, trying to deliver a bouquet to Fawn Deer in only five minutes, but ends up in one hilarious predicament after another. The short was directed by David Block.

August 5

August 5, 1997 – The Soundtrack to the Live Action Film Air Bud is Released Through Hollywood Records

“Words mean so little when you look up and smile.”

On August 5, 1997, the soundtrack for the live action feature film Air Bud was released through Disney’s Hollywood Records label. The album is comprised of the score by composer Brahm Wenger, along with two songs featured in the film: “Clair” by Gilbert O’Sullivan, and “Splish Splash” by Jimmy Z.

July 28

July 28, 1994 – Ground Breaks on Vero Beach Vacation Club Resort

“Relax on warm sand and play in the sparkling blue waters of Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.”

On July 28, 1994, a special groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Disney Vacation Club’s new Vero Beach location. The first Disney resort built outside of Walt Disney World property, Vero Beach resort is located in the Treasure Coast Region; the design and theme of the resort was meant to represent this coastal line. The groundbreaking ceremony featured appearances by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Chip ‘n’ Dale, along with several Disney enthusiasts. The resort eventually opened on October 1, 1995.

July 21, 1992 – The Restaurant China Voyager Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On July 21, 1992, the restaurant China Voyager opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Adventureland area. Displaying a nautical theme, the menu features Chinese cuisine, including noodle bowls, butakakuni rice, and nikuman. The restaurant is relatively inexpensive, with dishes ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 yen.

July 17

July 17, 1992 – The Animated Short Film Off His Rockers Premieres

On July 17, 1992, the animated short film Off His Rockers premiered in theaters. It was an experimental piece for the Disney Studio, Disney using some early form of computer animation within the short. It was directed by Barry Cook, and animated at the Disney-MGM Studios.

The short begins with a little boy playing video games, while his old rocking horse peeks at him from behind the closet door. The horse rocks his way out to see the boy, eyes wide with fatigue, and attempts ot get his attention by rocking around the room, only to break off one of his rockers. Realizing he can walk without the rocking pieces, he continues to try and get the boy’s attention through various antics, including kicking the game way. Unfortunately, this only angers the boy, and he runs to get the game. As the boy runs to get his controller, he steps on a picture of him and the rocking horse, and spies the horse sadly reapplying his rocking pieces. The boy has a change of heart and dons his old Western gear after turning off his game for good. The two race around the room before running off into the sunset for a new adventure.

July 6, 1997 – The Grand Floridian Restaurant Flagler’s Closes

“Specialties include Veal Scaloppini with Marsala Wine Sauce and Sauteed Shrimp.”

On July 6, 1997, the Grand Floridian restaurant Flagler’s closed. Open since 1988, the restaurant specialized in Italian cuisine. After it closed, it was replaced with Citricos, a restaurant that had a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

July 4, 1994 – The Attraction Les Mystères du Nautilus Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Continue your quest through Discoveryland and navigate your crew to Jules Verne’s Nautilus for a tour with a tentacular surprise.”

On July 4, 1994, the walk-through attraction Les Mystères du Nautilus opened in Disneyland Paris. Based on the live-action feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, this Discoveryland attraction allows guests to board Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilus, and learn the secrets of what lies below the surface of the water.

July 3, 1998 – Innoventions Opens in Disneyland

On July 3, 1998, the Innoventions attraction opened in Disneyland. Housed in the former Carousel of Progress attraction area, it was a two-story exhibit that featured up and coming innovations in areas such as computer science, robotics, and even regular home chores. The area was enhanced in 2013 to include the characters from Marvel, featuring Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. The area was officially closed on March 31, 2015.

July 1, 1996 – The Nightclub Atlantic Dance Opens in Walt Disney World

“Get into the groove at this hoppin’ nightclub that plays the hottest songs from the ‘80s, ‘90s, and today.”

On July 1, 1996, the nightclub Atlantic Dance opened in Walt Disney World’s Boardwalk area. Located right next to the balcony overlooking Crescent Lake, guests can take a breather between dances to look at the sunset over the water. The club has experimented with different dance styles over the years, ranging from swing dance to salsa. It is open to guests aged 21 and older.

June 29

June 29, 1996 – Donald’s Boat Opens in Mickey’s Toontown Fair

“…Donald’s boat may make you never want to be a landlubber again!”

On June 29, 1996, the Donald’s Boat attraction opened in the Mickey’s Toontown Fair area of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The attraction gave guests the opportunity to explore Donald Duck’s houseboat home, viewing his mementos and priceless treasures, as well as a few other surprises and activities along the way. The attraction was closed on February 11, 2011, but versions still exist in Disneyland’s Toontown and Tokyo Disneyland’s Toontown.
