August 27, 2010 – Tokyo Disneyland Welcomes 500,000,000th Guest

On August 27, 2010, Tokyo Disneyland welcomed its 500,000,000th guest, Megumi Soma. The park opened on April 15, 1983, and hit its first guest milestone – the 250,000,000th guest – on July 14th, 2000. Soma was given a special plaque along with a photo opportunity with Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

August 26, 2014 – The Legacy Collection: Mary Poppins is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Feed the birds, that’s what she cries, while overhead her birds fill the skies.”

On August 26, 2014, the second entry in Walt Disney Records’ Legacy Collection, featuring the music from the Disney live-action feature film Mary Poppins, was released. This release was done to coincide with the film’s 50th anniversary, and featured three discs: disc one features the full soundtrack from the film, disc two is a combination of demos by the Sherman Brothers and “Lost Chords,” and disc three features recordings of story meetings and reminiscing on the making of the film. The release also comes with a 20-page booklet with liner notes. The release also features artwork by visual development artist Lorelay Bove.

August 25, 2008 – Disney Finalizes Sale of Land to Four Seasons

On August 25, 2008, the Walt Disney Company finalized the sale of almost 300 acres in Orlando, Florida, to the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Four Seasons would use this land to build the Four Seasons Resort Orlando hotel, a vacation homes section called Residence Club, a championship golf course, and a variety of single- and multi-family vacation homes. The main hotel had 444 rooms, and was designed by the firm Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo; it opened on August 3, 2014, and was included as part of the Golden Oak residential community.

August 24, 2006 – Disney Donates Two White Rhinos to Africa

On August 24, 2006, two white rhinos took their first steps on African soil after living in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park in Orlando, Florida. The rhinos were taken to Africa to help boost the dwindling numbers there, as only about 17,500 exist in the wild. They were released in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in the Nakasongola district, located outside of Kampala. The rhinos, Nande (7-years-old) and Hasani (5-years-old), were a little wary once removed from the crate, but sanctuary workers were hopeful that they would acclimate to their new home and breed within the next year.

August 23, 1990 – The Updated Educational Film Series You and Your… is Released

“You are a human animal, you are a very special breed.”

On August 23, 1990, the You and Your…cartoon series, originally created for the Mickey Mouse Club, were updated and rereleased. The series included You – The Living Machine (discusses the human body and how it turns food into energy), You – The Human Animal (discusses the human’s ability to think and reason, setting it apart from all the other animals), You – and Your Five Senses (discusses the human responses to stimuli and how this helped with human development), and You – and Your Food (discusses the value of food and the importance of a well-balanced diet). These educational cartoons were hosted by Jiminy Cricket.

August 22, 2006 – The Disney Community Celebration Announces Third Hotel

On August 22, 2006, the Walt Disney Company-created community Celebration, located in Osceola County, announced that they would be building its third hotel, and the largest one in the area to date. The 450-room condo hotel was to be developed by Mona Lisa Development, the U.S. affiliate of the French group Mona Lisa Hotels and Residences, in partnership with the Related Group of Florida. This was the French company’s first foray into development in the U.S., and Related Group’s first project in Central Florida. August 21, 2009 – The Documentary X Games 3D: The Movie is Released

On August 21, 2009, the documentary X Games 3D: The Movie was released to theaters in Digital 3D format for a week-long engagement. The film highlighted the history and the drama of the X Games, an annual extreme sports event that includes sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and BMX Freestyle. Directed by Steve Lawrence and narrated by Emile Hirsch, the film features footage of the games’ then-biggest stars, such as Shaun White, Travis Pastrana, Danny Way, Ricky Carmichael, and Tony Hawk.

August 20, 2015 – The ABC Series Astronaut Wives Club Ends

“Behind these heroes are the housewives making their own headlines.”

On August 20, 2015, the limited series The Astronaut Wives Club aired its last episode. The ten-episode mini-series was based on the book of the same name by Lily Koppel, centering on the wives of the Mercury Seven, a group of astronauts that flew spacecraft for Project Mercury. When NASA named the men who were part of the Mercury Seven, their wives were thrust into the public spotlight, and the group of women banded together to get through the good and bad times. The series starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Betty Grissom, Yvonne Strahovski as Rene Carpenter, Dominique McElligot as Louise Shepard, Odette Annable as Trudy Cooper, Erin Cummings as Marge Slayton, Azure Parsons as Annie Glenn, and Zoe Boyle as Jo Schirra. The final episode touches on the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon.

August 19, 2014 – The Marketplace Boat Dock and Saratoga Bridge Open in Downtown Disney

“A beautiful day to debut a new bridge and boat dock at Downtown Disney.”

On August 19, 2014, the Marketplace Boat Dock and Saratoga Bridge opened in Downtown Disney’s Marketplace area. Part of the expansion project of the area, the bridge offered a connection between Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and the shopping area, while the boat dock provided guests ease of access to the West Side and Pleasure Island. The ceremony for the opening was held early that morning, with Keith Bradford, Vice President of Downtown Disney, on hand for the ceremonies.

August 18, 2006 – The Stage Version of High School Musical Premieres at Stagedoor Manor

“The breathless optimism of the lyrics is shared by many of the kids who attend Stagedoor Manor summer camp, which mounts 13 productions with 270 kids every three weeks…”

On August 18, 2006, the world premiere of the stage version of the popular Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical took place at the Stagedoor Manor theater camp. Stagedoor Manor, a well-regarded summer camp with a working relationship with Disney scored the rights to the musical after mounting “junior” productions of Broadway musicals Rent and Aida.
