July 23, 1928 – The Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Short Film Sleigh Bells Premieres in Theaters

“The restoration of [Sleigh Bells] will introduce many audiences to Disney’s work in the silent period – it clearly demonstrates the vitality and imagination of his animation at a key pint in his early career.”

On July 23, 1928, the 25th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short film Sleigh Bells was released to theaters. Originally considered a lost film, it was discovered by the British Film Institute (BFI) in their collection in 2015. The collection had been uploaded to an online database, where a Disney researcher spotted the film. Before being spotted, the film reel was earmarked to be thrown away, but BFI’s upload ultimately saved the film. The film premiered for the public on December 12, 2015, almost 90 years after its premiere.

July 22, 2006 – Radio Disney Holds 10th Birthday Concert

“We’re excited to bring our listeners and favorite artists together for one night to celebrate music, families, and Radio Disney.”

On July 22, 2006, Radio Disney held a special 10th birthday concert at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, California. The concert featured a mix of Hollywood Records recording artists and Radio Disney staples, including Jesse McCartney, Bowling for Soup, the Cheetah Girls, Aly & AJ, and Everlife. The concert was also broadcast live on the Radio Disney website. A second similar celebration was held in Dallas, Texas a few months later.

July 21, 2009 – Demi Lovato’s Second Album Here We Go Again is Released Through Hollywood Records

On July 21, 2009, the second studio album by recording artist and Disney Channel star Demi Lovato, entitled Here We Go Again, was released through Hollywood Records. The album was titled after its lead single, which was released on June 23; the second single was “Remember December,” which was released on January 18, 2010. Lovato worked with a variety of songwriters to give the album a more mature sound than her debut effort. The album was a critical success, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200, and going on to Gold certification.

July 20, 1982 – Walt Disney’s Great Ice Odyssey Premieres

“Fairy godmothers do make dreams come true at Walt Disney’s Great Ice Odyssey.”

On July 20, 1982, Disney’s second ice show, entitled Walt Disney’s Great Ice Odyssey premiered. The touring ice show was produced by Irvin and Kenneth Feld, and featured Disney classics The Three Little Pigs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, along with the classic Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. The show also featured skaters Elizabeth and Peter Cain, Almut Lehmann, and Herbert Wiesinger.

July 19, 2011 – The Soundtrack for Captain America: The First Avenger is Released

On July 19, 2011, the soundtrack for the Marvel film Captain America: The First Avenger was released through Buena Vista Records and Marvel Music. The soundtrack features the score by Alan Silvestri, as well as the song “Star Spangled Man” by David Zippel and Alan Menken. The soundtrack was well-received by critics and fans alike, with “Captain America” being used in other Marvel films as the official Captain America theme within the film score.

July 18, 2011 – The Attraction Jasmine’s Flying Carpets Opens in Tokyo DisneySea

On July 18, 2011, the attraction Jasmine’s Flying Carpets opened in the Arabian Coast area of Tokyo DisneySea. The attraction, based on the hit animated feature Aladdin, is similar to the Walt Disney World attraction The Magic Carpets of Aladdin; guests board flying carpets and soar over Jasmine’s garden, with the ability to make the carpet tilt and soar higher or lower.

July 17, 2009 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar is Honored with a Window on Main Street

(July 17, 2009) Marty Sklar, Executive Vice President and Walt Disney Imagineering Ambassador holds his tribute window at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday, the 54th anniversary of the opening of Disneyland. In a tradition begun by Walt Disney, second-story windows along Main Street USA pay tribute to the men and women who were instrumental in the creation and operation of Disneyland. Sklar's window, unveiled this morning, can be seen above City Hall at Town Square in Disneyland. Sklar, who began his Disney career in June 1955 as editor of "The Disneyland News," went on to work personally with Walt Disney on the creation of landmark Disney attractions for the 1964 World's Fair and leading the design of Walt Disney's final vision, Epcot. On July 17, 2009, coinciding with his retirement, as well as honoring the 54th anniversary of Disneyland, Marty Sklar was honored with a window on Main Street, USA. Sklar, who worked on The Disneyland News newsletter in 1955, officially began with WED Enterprises in 1961, and primarily worked in publicity work, becoming the creative leader for Imagineering for over 30 years. Sklar’s window is located at City Hall, which was seen as a symbol of his leadership, philosophy, and creative talent. Sklar has also been honored with a window in Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disney, and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park.

July 16, 2011 – A Lesser Flamingo Chick is Hatched at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

“You could say that less is more for a flamingo chick hatched at Disney’s Animal Kingdom…”

On July 16, 2011, a lesser flamingo chick hatched in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and was the first lesser flamingo to be born in the park’s wildlife reserve. The chick has an interesting backstory, as it hatched and was raised by a group of greater flamingos (a larger species of flamingo than that of the chick). The egg was laid in a habitat near the Tree of Life, and was part of the first laying of eggs by the lesser flamingo species within the park. A decision was made to move the egg to the habitat of the greater flamingos when it was discovered that the eggs the greaters had laid were nonviable. The foster parents then watched and incubated the egg for the remaining 11 days before it hatched, and continued to raise the chick among seven other greater flamingo chicks.

July 15, 1995 – The Wedding Pavilion Opens in Walt Disney World

“Enchanting from afar and dazzling from within, this locale is our premier wedding destination, expressly made for matrimony and ensconced in a lush and tranquil garden setting.”

On July 15, 1995, the special Wedding Pavilion opened in Walt Disney World, on a private island in the Seven Seas Lagoon near the Magic Kingdom. After the success of the Fairy Tale Weddings department, it was necessary to have a specific place for weddings within Walt Disney World; the first wedding held there was on June 18, 1995, and was featured on the Lifetime special Weddings of a Lifetime. The pavilion can accommodate up to 250 guests, and Cinderella’s Castle can be seen in the background of the garden area. The pavilion is still a highly sought after place for Disney-themed weddings.

July 14, 2006 – The Legend of Mythica Show Begins in Tokyo DisneySea

On July 14, 2006, in conjunction with the 5th anniversary of the park, the harbor show The Legend of Mythica began its run in Tokyo DisneySea. The show, replacing the Porto Paradiso Water Carnival, featured an original mythology-inspired story, with Disney characters acting as spirit companions to mythological creatures. The show also featured a score by Alan Silvestri, and an original song for the anniversary celebrations entitled “Sea of Dreams” by Japanese recording artist Misia. The show ended its run on September 7, 2014.
