May 12, 2017 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has World Premiere at Shanghai Disney Resort

“In the shadow of Disney’s newest theme park that opened last year, hundreds of ‘Pirates’ fans lined up to catch a glimpse of stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Javier Bardem ahead of an afternoon viewing.”

On May 12, 2017, the world premiere of the newest film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was held at the new Shanghai Disney Resort. This was the first time that a Hollywood film had a premiere in mainland China, and Shanghai Disney was an interesting choice due to the park’s inclusion of Disney’s first pirate-themed park. Hundreds of fans of the films were on hand to celebrate the premiere and to see of the stars of the film, particularly Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Javier Bardem.

May 10, 2007 – The Broadway Musical Tarzan Celebrates One Year on Broadway with Book Signing

On May 10, 2007, the Broadway musical Tarzan celebrated one year on Broadway with a special book signing at the Barnes & Noble Lincoln Triangle. Author Michael Lassell, who wrote Tarzan: The Broadway Adventure, was joined by actors Josh Strickland, Jenn Gambatese, and Chester Gregory, who played Tarzan, Jane, and Terk, respectively, along with composer Phil Collins. In addition to signing books, the cast members entertained the crowd with songs from the show.

May 9, 2007 – Mary Poppins Celebrates 200th Performance on Broadway

“The hit Broadway musical Mary Poppins marked its 200th performance at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Wednesday, May 9th at 8pm.”

On May 9, 2007, the 8pm showing of the Broadway musical Mary Poppins celebrated the show’s 200th performance. Premiering at the New Amsterdam Theater on November 16, 2006, the production featured Ashley Brown as Mary Poppins and Gavin Creel as Bert. The cast celebrated the milestone performance with a cake that featured a likeness of the show’s poster. The show would go on to play 2,619 performances before closing on March 3, 2013.

May 8, 2009 – The Collaboration Film Trail of the Panda is Released in China

“High in the mountains of the Sichuan province of China, a ten year old mute orphan boy, Lu, rescues a lost panda cub separated from its mother.”

On May 8, 2009, the second collaboration film between Disney and Chinese filmmakers, entitled Trail of the Panda, was released in China; it premiered in Chengdu on April 27. The film was set and filmed in the Sichuan Province, and features Daichi Harashima as ten-year-old Lu, a mute orphan who befriends lost panda cub Pang Pang and helps him find his way home. The film was eventually released on home video in the United States on September 6, 2011.

May 7, 2012 – The Disney Wonder Stops in Hawaii for the First Time

“Let us know…if you wish you were saying ‘aloha’ to these gorgeous islands today or if you’re saying on our next Hawaiian cruise in October.”

On May 7, 2012, the Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Wonder, was the first Disney Cruise Line ship to sail to the Hawaiian Islands. The 15-night voyage took guests through Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach. Soon after, a 14-night voyage was also offered, departing from the Port of Los Angeles.

May 6, 1988 – The Kringla Bakeri og Kafe Opens in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion

“Then ready yourself for conquest with Viking coffee!”

On May 6, 1988, the Kringla Bakeri og Kafe opened in Epcot’s World Showcase’s newest pavilion Norway. The café serves traditional Norwegian snacks, including a kjøttkake entrée (Norwegian meatballs), a sweet pretzel with chocolate, and a park favorite known as School Bread, which is a sweet cardamom bun filled with a vanilla custard and covered with toasted coconut. The café also serves coffee, Scandanavian beer, and wine.

May 5, 2005 – The Fireworks Show Remember…Dreams Come True Begins Run

“Rekindle some of your fondest Disney memories during this stirring revival of a classic fireworks show…”

On May 5, 2005, as part of the Disneyland 50th anniversary celebration, a new fireworks show called Remember…Dreams Come True kicked off its run. It features a narration by Disneyland 50th Anniversary Ambassador Julie Andrews, along with several pieces of classic Disney songs, as well as several sounds and songs from Disneyland. The conclusion of the show also features a song called “Remember When,” performed by country artist LeAnn Rimes. The show originally finished its run in 2014, but was brought back as for select nights and currently still runs in the park.

May 4, 2012 – A Male White Rhino is Born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

“A rhino birth is a significant event because at one time the species was nearly extinct.”

On May 4, 2012, it was announced that a male white rhino calf was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This was the fourth white rhino born to 13-year-old Kendi, who was the first rhino born in the park. His birth is also significant as being the third generation of the line that started at the park. Disney is part of specialized conservation efforts to help save the declining rhino population, which has grown to over 20,000 worldwide.

May 3, 2005 – The Compilation Album Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs is Released

“Though her words are simple and few, listen, listen, she’s calling to you.”

On May 3, 2005, as part of the Disneyland 50th anniversary celebrations, the album Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs was released through Walt Disney Records. Andrews, who is well-known for her role as the titular character in the live action feature film Mary Poppins, was selected as the Official Ambassador for the 50th anniversary celebration; this album was created to celebrate this, and to reflect on Andrews’ favorite Disney memories. Rather than releasing new songs, this album was a compilation of Disney songs, ranging from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Beauty and the Beast.

May 2, 1993 – The Theater of the Stars Temporarily Closes

On May 2, 1993, the Theater of the Stars closed at its location on Hollywood Boulevard in Disney-MGM Studios. The amphitheater area, known for its showings of the live stage show of Beauty and the Beast, had been open since the park’s opening on May 1, 1989. It closed to make way for the expansion of Sunset Boulevard; it eventually moved to its current location in the expanded Sunset Boulevard area.
