May 21, 1999 – Bill Nye the Science Guy Wins Four Daytime Emmy Awards

“Science rules.”

On May 21, 1999, the 26th Daytime Emmy Awards were held at The Theater in Madison Square Garden, New York City. At this ceremony, the science program Bill Nye the Science Guy walked away with four awards: Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Single-Camera Editing, Outstanding Directing for a Children’s Series, and Outstanding Children’s Series. This would be the first year that the show would win Outstanding Children’s Series, and would win it again in 2000.

May 20, 2008 – The Compilation Tribute Album Disneymania 6 is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Music stars sing Disney, their way!”

On May 20, 2008, the sixth compilation tribute album in the Disneymania series, aptly titled Disneymania 6, was released through Walt Disney Records. The album mostly featured artists under the Hollywood Studios record label or featured on Disney Channel, such as Demi Lovato and Plain White T’s. The album had four promotional singles: “Cruella de Vil” by Selena Gomez, “That’s How You Know” by Demi Lovato, “Kiss the Girl” by Colbie Caillat, and “Real Gone” by Billy Ray Cyrus. The album peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200.

May 19, 2010 – Turtle Day is Celebrated in Animal Kingdom Park

“May is a fantastic month to celebrate turtles and tortoises.”

On May 19, 2010, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park held a special day of events to celebrate Turtle Day, which sought to bring awareness to turtles and tortoises and what guests can do to protect them. Activities that day included sessions to teach guests what threatens turtle habitats, interactive ways of using “turtle sight” to find food, and up-close-and-personal looks at some of the turtle and tortoise species that the park conservationists protect. 2010 was a particularly important year to highlight conservation efforts for turtles and tortoises, as Disney worked in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to offer assistance and resources to those animals hurt by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

May 18, 2015 – Inside Out Premieres at the Cannes Film Festival

“Hopefully, no matter where you are or what your culture, you can see yourself in this.” – Director and Writer Pete Docter

On May 18, 2015, the 15th Pixar Animated Feature Inside Out premiered at the 68th Cannes Film Festival as an out-of-competition film. The film was met with much critical success, with many critics, including The Toronto Star’s Peter Howell, saying that it received “double to loudest applause of any other film at the festival.” Attending the festival were director and writer Pete Docter; John Lasseter;  American voice actors Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Phyllis Smith; and French voice actors Charlotte Le Bon, Marilou Berry, Gilles Lellouche, and Pierre Niney. The film would premiere in North America a month later on June 19.

May 17, 1991 – The Port Orleans French Quarter Resort Opens in Walt Disney World

“Revel in the romance and pageantry of New Orleans’s historic French Quarter at this Moderate Resort hotel…”

On May 17, 1991, the Walt Disney World hotel Port Orleans French Quarter opened. Themed around the lively atmosphere of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, the hotel has 1,008 rooms complete with gold, green, and purple accents. The hotel also features the quick service restaurant Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory Food Court, along with two lounges: Scat Cat’s Club and Mardi Grogs. Another popular amenity is the swimming pool Doubloon Lagoon, which features a sea serpent. In 2001, the Dixie Landings resort combined with Port Orleans, and eventually split off to become Port Orleans Riverside.

May 16, 2003 – The Animated Series Teacher’s Pet Wins Daytime Emmy Award

“He’s so over just being Rover.”

On May 16, 2003, the 30th Daytime Emmy Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. At this ceremony, the animated television series Teacher’s Pet, which was part of ABC’s One Saturday Morning programming block, ended up winning an award for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program, its second and final win in this category. The show won against Static Shock, Madeline: My Fair Madeline, Ozzy & Drix, and Rolie Polie Olie.

May 15, 2016 – The Quick Service Restaurant D-Luxe Burger Opens in Disney Springs

“Satisfy gourmet cravings at this ranch-inspired eatery overlooking the springs.”

On May 15, 2016, the quick service casual restaurant D-Luxe Burger opened in Disney Springs, Walt Disney World. As its name suggests, the restaurant serves gourmet burgers, including the El Diablo Burger that features chorizo, fried banana peppers, and chipotle mayonnaise. The restaurant is also known for its gelato milkshakes, with flavors such as smoked bourbon and s’mores.

May 14, 2002 – The English Version of Kingdom Hearts is Announced

“Kingdom Hearts is an epic tale of adventure, heroism and, ultimately, the sacrifice of what is held dearest for the greater good.”

On May 14, 2002, the English version of the popular Japanese game Kingdom Hearts was announced through public release. Created through a partnership with Square Co., Ltd., and Disney Interactive, the 3D role playing game introduces players to the character Sora who, alongside Donald and Goody, set off on a mission to find their friends and protect the Disney Castle; this was also the first game where multiple Disney characters and their worlds co-existed in one platform. The English cast of the game included Haley Joel Osment as Sora, David Gallagher as Riku, and Hayden Panettiere as Kairi.

May 13, 2008 – The Disney Tribute Album Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust is Released by Singer Kerry Butler

“Fathers were born to pay, and princesses get their way.”

On May 13, 2008, the Disney tribute album Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust by Broadway singer and recording artist Kerry Butler was released through P.S. Classics. This album showcased Butler’s favorite Disney songs, along with two songs that were originally unreleased: “Call Me a Princess” originally intended for Aladdin, and “This Only Happens in the Movies,” which Alan Menken had written for Who Framed Roger Rabbit; this recording of the latter was its inaugural recording of the cut track. Butler’s ties to Disney also go back to 1995 when she played Belle in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast until 1997.

May 12, 1967 – Florida Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr. Signs Disney Bill

On May 12, 1967, then-Florida Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr. signed special legislation that allowed Walt Disney Productions’ the ability to run the operations for Walt Disney World. Before the legislation, there were concerns that Florida taxpayers would have to pay for the construction of the new Disney park. This legislation allowed the formation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District with two cities: Bay Lake and Reedy Creek (now known as Lake Buena Vista). The creation of these cities allowed Disney to issue tax-free bonds, as well as remain unaffected by any current or future state land-use laws.
