D_TLoT_1

“Come on! What’s more important than an afternoon of mindless frolicking with his old pals, huh?”

On September 3, 2001, the animated series Disney’s The Legend of Tarzan premiered on UPN and in syndication, as part of the Disney’s One Too programming block. The series was based on the characters from the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of Tarzan and the animated feature based on the books. It is set after the events of the film, where Tarzan succeeds Kerchak as the Lord of the Jungle. The series ran for 39 episodes in two seasons. The series was created by Disney Pictures Television, and starred Michael T. Weiss as Tarzan, Olivia d’Abo as Jane, April Winchell as Terk, Jim Cummings as Tantor, Suzanne Blakeslee as Kala, and Jeff Bennett as Professor Archimedes.

The first episode, “Tarzan and the Race Against Time,” begins with Tantor standing quietly in the jungle, talking to himself before he is startled by friend Terk. The two can’t find Tarzan, though they do find him swinging vines with his wife Jane, and Terk thinks that Tarzan has forgotten them in favor of Jane. Jane tries to show off, but Tarzan quickly saves her from falling to her doom. She continues to swing, and the two head back to the treehouse. Terk starts talking badly about Jane, and Tantor points out that Terk is jealous. Tarzan drops in, and as Terk starts to talk about Jane, Tarzan begins wrestling with Terk, just as they used to do. As they play, Terk gets caught in a hollow log and is pulled out, covered in spiders. Tarzan is bitten by one of the spiders, but brushes it off as nothing.

When he heads back to the treehouse, Jane sees the mark where he was bitten, and immediately calls her father to investigate. It turns out that the spider is quite poisonous, and there isn’t much time before Tarzan dies from the poison. The only antidote is in the root of the Mububu flower, which only grows at the top of a waterfall. Jane rushes off to get the flower, although Tarzan believes that he is fine. Against her wishes, Tarzan goes with her, as well as her father, Tantor, and Terk. Terk doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with Tarzan, and is more annoyed by Jane than anything. Terk continues to torment Jane, who constantly finds herself in dangerous situations. The group is attacked by a snake, and although Tarzan fights back, he is growing weaker thanks to the venom. Tarzan’s pride keeps him from accepting help from the others, and he quickly sets forth to get the others across the chasm, but falls when blurry vision keeps him from catching his vine. He lands in the lair of wild jackals, and barely has enough strength to ward them off. The group sets off to save Tarzan, managing to make it just in time.

Tarzan collapses after the attack, and Jane struggles up the ledge with Terk to retrieve the Mububu root. Tarzan has a hallucination that Tantor’s trunk is the earlier snake, and that Jane’s father is Clayton. When Jane and Terk reach the top of the waterfall, they find the flower in the middle of the raging waterfall. Jane has finally had enough of Terk’s berating, and finally tells Terk to hold her tongue rather than tell her she can’t do anything. Terk begrudgingly helps, but the vine snaps once Jane retrieves the flower. Terk dives in to grab the vine, and the two end up hanging from the rock. Terk and Jane work together to save themselves and get the flower quickly to Jane’s father. The antidote is quickly made, and Tarzan is saved. The episode ends with Terk appreciating Jane, though she acts as though she doesn’t.

August 23, 1997 – The Disney Channel Original Movie Northern Lights Premieres

vlcsnap-2015-08-23-09h12m59s224

“It is never a happy time when we are asked to say goodbye, yet that’s what today is for.”

On August 23, 1997, the Disney Channel Original Movie Northern Lights premiered. This was the first film to be billed as a Disney Channel Original Movie, as others preceding it had been known as Disney Channel Premiere Films. It was based on the 1988 stage play of the same name by John Hoffman. The film was written by Hoffman and Kevin Kane, and directed by Linda Yellen. It starred Diane Keaton as Roberta Blumstein, Maury Chaykin as Ben Rubadue, Joseph Cross as Jack, Kathleen York as Daphne, and John Robert Hoffman as Joe Scarlotti.

The film begins with a little boy being told about the Northern Lights by his father, how they are a phenomenon that shows up in their own time. Meanwhile in New York, Roberta Blumstein is in trouble once again. She sells tickets for Broadway shows, and continually argues with her customers, as well as takes too many breaks. She then gets a phone call about her brother, as he died rescuing a cat from the top of an electrical pole. Roberta has been estranged from her brother for ten years, and she recalls their last moment together. She heads out on the next train, and meets a strange man at the Bright River Junction station, also waiting for a ride into town. She and the man head to the King Edward Hotel, which is surprisingly decorated with hundreds of lights. The hotel is filled with interesting characters, and the two quickly make their way to settle down for the night.

The next morning, two kids are spying on Roberta, who is brought room service by a scary individual, which causes her to drop the tray on the floor. The other man, Ben Rubadue, has left several messages for his wife, who doesn’t seem to be responding. Later, she is accompanied by Joe Scarlotti to the memorial service for her brother, while Ben is being stalked by a strange woman. Roberta is confused and stunned by the attention given to her brother, which includes several interesting changes to how the church is being run. She then is shocked to find that Frank had a son named Jack she knew nothing about. Scarlotti then reads the will to Roberta and Ben, which gives them joint custody of Frank, which greatly annoys Roberta. She decides to call her lawyer to remove her from the responsibility, and gets incredibly lost on her way back to the hotel. She runs into the reverend’s wife, and tries to get her to take responsibility for Frank.

Roberta finally makes her way back only to get stuck in the hotel’s elevator. Jack helps her get out, and Roberta finds out that he and Frank live in the hotel. He thinks that Roberta didn’t like her father, and that his dad told him that she was a lot of fun. Roberta is impressed by Jack’s piano skills, particularly when he plays Debussy, and is painfully reminded of Frank. Later, she starts throwing a tantrum when the cigarette machine won’t dispense her cigarettes, and runs into Ben. The two head out to dinner to talk, and she admits that she is a childless widow. The two try to pawn Jack off onto the other, and are surprised by the band beginning to play. The singer of the band, Daphne, introduces Roberta, and tries to get her on stage to sing. Although reluctant, she gets up and sings, but has to leave when she starts to cry. Daphne attempt to comfort her, though Roberta rebuffs her. Ben tries to comfort her too, but Roberta angrily admits that no one understands what she’s feeling, and opening up doesn’t help. Roberta is unaware that Jack has heard the entire exchange. Ben leaves another message for his wife, who still won’t return his calls.

The next morning, Ben gets a visit from Daphne, who asks him to help her to a picnic. Roberta is ready to go home to New York, refusing to go to Frank’s memorial party. She finally is persuaded to go, after being given a pair of sneakers to wear. She starts to bond with Jack at the party, and they talk about Frank. However, when she admits that she doesn’t know why Frank chose her to take care of Jack, it prompts Jack to run away. Roberta frantically searches for Jack, and finds him with his mother, Margaret. Roberta is surprised that she is still alive, and they sit together when Jack plays the piano at the party. Roberta questions Margaret at the party, and the woman starts jumping about and dancing. Everyone chases after Margaret, who runs into the river. His mother has mental issues and is unable to take care of Jack, and Jack runs away again. Ben chases after him, and finds him on a nearby swing set. Jack says he can’t leave his mom behind, and Ben agrees. When Roberta finds Jack later throwing rocks at his cat, as he is mad that his cat caused his dad’s death. She admits that she was mad at Frank because she didn’t want him to leave. Jack thinks Roberta will stay, but is hurt when he finds that she still want to go back to New York City.

Ben and Daphne have tea together, and there seems to be a mutual attraction between them, culminating in a kiss. Later, he finally gets a call from his wife, who turns out to be his ex-wife. He admits to Roberta that he wants to stay and take care of Jack. Roberta decides to take the train back to New York, and when she gets ready to leave, the town has gathered to wish her well. She still falters on leaving, but Jack says he understands, as he likes where he lives as well. As she waits for the train with Ben, Jack heads out to the roof to once again search for the Northern Lights. Jack slips on the roof and is dangling from the gutter, with Ben and Roberta rushing to help. The group at the hotel manages to catch him in a sheet, and Roberta holds him close, though she misses her train. The film ends with everyone wishing Jack a happy birthday, and Roberta has remained in town. On their way home, Jack, Roberta, and Ben look up to see the Northern Lights.

August 21, 1999 – The Disney Chanel Original Movie Genius Premieres

vlcsnap-2015-08-21-19h01m46s177

“Science and hockey: my two favorite things in the world are in the same building!”

On August 21, 1999, the Disney Channel Original Movie Genius premiered. It was written by John Rieck, Jim Lincoln, and Dan Studney, and directed by Rod Daniel. It starred Trevor Morgan as Charlie Boyle, Emmy Rossum as Claire Addison, Charles Fleischer as Dr. Krickstein, and Yannick Bisson as Mike MacGregor

The movie begins with 14-year-old Charlie Boyle playing hockey by himself in an empty rink. His dad appears and asks him to use the Zamboni, but Charlie, a genius, gives his father an invention that should clean the ice instantaneously. Charlie then heads off to a street hockey game, hoping that this day is the day the other kids will let him play. Unfortunately, Charlie once again finds himself on the sidelines, unable to fit in. Dejected, he sits on the curb until nightfall. When he gets home, however, he gets good news in the form of college scholarships from the top schools. He decides to go to Northern University of Wisconsin, where his idol Dr. Krickstein works. Charlie arrives for orientation, and heads straight for the hockey rink to see the school’s team, the Northern Lights, hard at practice, but there also seems to be some conflict between Krickstein and the hockey team. Charlie heads down to meet his idol, but is soon disappointed by what he’s found; however, he tries to make the best of his situation. Things get worse for Charlie when he meets his roommate: star of the Northern Lights, Mike MacGregor.

Charlie has to teach a few classes in order to maintain his scholarship, and heads to his first class. The students don’t respect him, and finds out later than Mike has moved out, as he doesn’t want to be anywhere near Charlie. Krickstein advises Charlie to find a new approach to making friends, and when Charlie heads to the rink, he sees a beautiful girl practicing her figure skating. She introduces herself as Claire, and Charlie decides to take Krickstein’s advice to heart, and pretends to be bad boy Chaz Anthony from Chicago. After meeting her, he creates a whole other identity and decides to transfer to her school while maintaining his real identity at the University. Charlie takes what he learned from his students to become a disruptive bad boy. Although he thinks Claire would like a bad boy, it seems that she has her reservations. He then tries to get her to be her tutor so he can spend more time with her. Unfortunately, he finds that her father is the hockey coach at Northern.

Krickstein and Charlie’s experiment hits a critical point when they find a graviton as a wave rather than a particle. Things with his other life get worse, however, when Chaz and his 8th grade class are invited to Northern to meet Charlie. Krickstein helps Charlie disguise himself under the guise of being disfigured after a horrible lab accident. When he gets back to his room, he finds Mike there again, who asks Charlie for help with his classwork. He offers to help Charlie win Claire in exchange for tutoring, and Charlie agrees. Charlie then takes Claire to the nearby pond to skate in a hockey game, and allows another kid to take his place in the game, recalling his time on the bench. Claire offers to take him to the Northern hockey game, but Charlie turns her down. The two continue to hang out at the pond, where Claire reveals that her mother was a figure skater, which inspired her to be one as well. The next day, Mike thanks Charlie before the big game, giving him an honorary Northern Lights jersey, and Charlie reveals that he knows a way to stop the opposing team. He then goes to watch the game, leaving the particle accelerator running.

When he arrives at the game, his 8th grade friends find him and have him sit with them. Claire spots Charlie and points him out to her father, but her dad tells her that the boy she’d pointed out is actually Charlie Boyle, which upsets her. The particle accelerator overloads, which cracks the ice in the rink. The game is postponed, and Charlie is to blame. Charlie tries to make amends all around, but is unable to do so. When Krickstein comes back, the two set to work on splitting the graviton so they can defy gravity. This also gives Charlie an idea to fix everything by using the experiment to help the Northern Lights win the game. He asks his friends for their forgiveness and help, and they finally agree when Charlie admits that he is Charlie. The group sets their plan in motion, beginning with Charlie sabotaging the enemy team’s skates. Charlie’s plan prevents the opposing team from cheating, as the sabotaged skates will do everything that the kids’ skates do. The plan works, with Krickstein helping with the plan until he accidentally activates the switch that allows the kids, and the affected players to defy gravity. The Northern Lights win the game, Claire’s dad’s job is safe, and Claire and Charlie finally share a kiss.

August 2, 2010 – The Special Summer Episode “Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!” Premieres on Disney X D

“By busting the boys, I’d be busting myself?”

On August 2, 2010, the special episode of the hit animated series Phineas and Ferb, entitled “Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You,” premiered on Disney X D. This episode was the first one-hour long special for the show, and had almost 4 million viewers on its premiere date. The episode then premiered on the Disney Channel four days later. It was directed by Robert F. Hughes and Dan Povenmire.

The episode begins with Candace calling her boyfriend Jeremy, who is vacationing in Paris. Candace hangs up because Phineas and Ferb’s robot creation is jumping rope in the backyard. In true fashion, the robot disappears when their mother arrives home. Phineas realizes that the summer is half over, and they need a real challenge. Candace is left in charge of the boys while their parents head out of town for two days. Meanwhile, Professor Doofenschmirtz is taking his daughter to Vanessa to Tokyo, though he has an ulterior motive in going to Japan. The next morning, Phineas reveals his plans to take the longest day of the summer and make it even longer: he and Ferb have created a rocket that will fly all the way around the world, following the sun, therefore making it the longest day ever. Buford is unconvinced that this could possibly be done, and bets the two that they can’t do it. Should they lose, they have to announce to everyone that they are governed by the laws of physics, summer’s not whatever they make of it, and they can’t do anything else the rest of the summer. Stunt singers Clay Aiken and Shaka Khan appears to sing a song rousing support for Phineas’ mission.

Perry heads down to his secret lair to get his assignment: Dr. Doofenshmirtz is off to Tokyo where the annual Good Guy Convention is being held, with Major Monogram as the keynote speaker. Meanwhile, Stacy is helping Candace through her worries that Jeremy might be seeing other girls while in Paris. Candace reveals that she and Jeremy aren’t officially “boyfriend and girlfriend” yet, and Stacy advises Candace to just call Jeremy her boyfriend first. In Tokyo, Doofenshmirtz has already captured Major Monogram and has taken him with him on vacation, much to Vanessa’s annoyance. Phineas and Ferb sets up their flight, and Candace, while originally wanting to bust the boys, decides to go because they will be heading to Paris. The group heads to Tokyo, where Doofenshmirtz has set up a giant water balloon to fall over the Good Guy Convention, with Monogram to get the blame. The plane crashes in Tokyo, where Stacy’s family has been waiting for them. They help them refuel with a musical number and head off, accidentally catching Vanessa as they go. Vanessa, who had decided to leave her dad and head to Paris on her own, was thrown from the Tokyo Tower by her father’s water balloon crashing into her. Vanessa decides to join Phineas and Ferb. Doofenshmirtz decides to go after them, begging for Monogram and Perry’s help to do so.

The boys’ plane crashes in the Himalayas, as they didn’t account for the weight of an extra person. Luckily, Baljeet’s uncle lives nearby, where he has set up a rubber-making factory. The group is able to borrow some of the rubber, and manage to make it out after a slight mishap. The group bounces around the world thanks to the rubber ball they’ve constructed. The rubber ball deconstructs by the time they reach Paris, so the group stops to get fuel and parts. The group splits up, and Candace finds Jeremy with a group of teenagers, and worries that Jeremy has found another girlfriend. Isabella tries to make her outing with Phineas romantic, but Phineas is more distracted by looking for parts for his plane. Doofenshmirtz arrives in Paris to take Vanessa back, and decides to go after listening to some advice from Ferb. Isabella and Candace are both despondent about their ruined romantic prospects. While Phineas cheers Candace up, Jeremy arrives, and Candace decides to tell him how she feels. Jeremy calls her his girlfriend, and the two establish their relationship.

The group then sets off home, and are close to making it home, when the rocket completely disintegrates, leaving the group stranded on a deserted island. Candace despairs as she thinks romance is dead, and Buford brags that Phineas and Ferb will lose. Phineas tries to come up with a plan to leave, but realizes that he doesn’t have anything with which they can create anything. Isabella cries as she feels ignored by Phineas, who is frantically trying to come up with a plan. Finally, Isabella gives Phineas the self-esteem boost he needs, and he uses the map to create a special paper airplane to fly the group back home. Candace argues that the plan won’t fly, but the group convinces her to believe thanks to the lure of Jeremy. The group manages to arrive back in Danville, and are able to make it back to the backyard after Buford gives the group their bikes back. The group arrives home to a welcome home party in the backyard, and a musical number.

July 20, 1994 – The Final Episode of Dinosaurs Premieres

D_CN_!

“Oh, sure, some sacrifices had to be made along the way: a forest here, a few species there, but in the end, wouldn’t you trade all that for great advancements like, uh…microwave toast?”

On July 20, 1994, the series finale of the comedy series Dinosaurs premiered on ABC. A joint production between Jim Henson Productions, and Walt Disney Productions, Dinosaurs was the idea of Jim Henson and Alex Rockwell, and ran for four seasons before being cancelled in 1994. The show follows the Sinclairs, a prehistoric blue-collar family. It starred Stuart Panking as the voice of Earl Sinclair, Jessica Walter as the voice of Fran Sinclair, and John Kennedy as the voice of Baby. The show won an Emmy in 1991 for Art Direction.

The final episode, “Changing Nature,” begins with a news anchor announcing the migration of the Bunch Beetles back to Pangea. Earl and family are out in the park to see the migration, but Earl is having trouble working the grill. Everyone waits anxiously for the beetles to return, but the beetles don’t appear. While the rest of the family is concerned, Earl thinks that it doesn’t make any difference one way or the other. Four days later, the beetles have disappeared, and the cider poppies have become overgrown. Finally, one of the beetles arrives at Earl’s house, but he doesn’t know where the other beetles are. The beetle explains that he only has two weeks to live, and has to head to the swamp to mate, but he’s lost. Unfortunately, when Charlene takes him to the swamp, she finds that it has been replaced by a wax fruit factory. She then finds that the workers there have killed all the Bunch Beetles.

Earl and Fran work hard to clear the poppies within the house, and when they turn on the news, they find Charlene announcing that she knows why the beetles have disappeared. Earl’s boss B.P. Richfield is watching the news and gets an idea to use Earl as part of a task force to get rid of the cider poppies. Unfortunately, the task force’s idea to solve the problem is to cover the entire planet with a dangerous pesticide. The pesticide is sprayed, killing all the poppies – but killing all plant life of the planet as well, leaving nothing but a desolate wasteland. This has the devastating effect of killing the global food chain. When Earl and friend Roy go to Richfield, he gives them their idea to create clouds from volcanoes to make it rain by dropping bombs in the volcanoes. This then causes global temperatures to drop significantly, causing another major problem. Richfield isn’t worried about the world possibly coming to an end, and Earl decides to spend his last moments with his family, apologizing for what he had done. The family huddles together as the snow continues to build outside, freezing them inside their home.

July 19, 2013 – The Disney Channel Original Movie Teen Beach Movie Premieres

TBM_1

“Come on. They sing for no reason, they come out of the water and their hair is totally dry, the girls never surf as well as the boys, and they sing for no reason. I had to mention that one again cause even a second time, I don’t get why.”

On July 19, 2013, the Disney Channel Original Movie Teen Beach Movie premiered. It was the only DCOM to premiere in 2013, and became the second highest rated film with 8.4 million viewers on its first airing. The movie was dedicated to Annette Funicello, the original beach movie star who had passed away on April 8, 2013. The film was directed by Jeffrey Hornaday, with story by Vince Marcello and Mark Landry. The film starred Ross Lynch as Brady, Maia Mitchell as Mack, Grace Phipps as Lela, Garrett Clayton as Tanner, Kevin Chamberlin as Dr. Fusion, Steve Valentine as Les Camembert, and Barry Bostwick as Mack’s Grandfather.

The movie centers around teenagers Brady and Mack, a couple who have spent all day surfing. Mack tries to tell Brady something important, but gets distracted by the news of forty-foot waves the next day. In Mack’s grandfather’s house, there is another distraction in the form of Brady’s favorite film: Wet Side Story. Mack’s Aunt Antoinette shows up, revealing Mack’s news in front of Brady: Mack is leaving the next day. Brady is upset, as Mack will be heading to an exclusive private school back East. Mack asks for one more day to surf the big waves, but Aunt Antoinette won’t have it. Brady and Mack argue, but Mack says it’s her choice and she didn’t know how to tell Brady; Mack had made a deal with her Aunt to go to private school after her mother died. Mack wants to fulfill her mother’s dream of going to college, and breaks up with Brady.

The next day, as Mack packs to head East, she finds her grandfather’s legendary surfboard and decides to hit up the forty-foot waves. Brady finds her and watches her as she heads out to surf, trying to find the perfect wave. Mack’s grandfather finds Brady and warns him that the sky doesn’t look good, and although it is deemed dangerous to surf, Mack continues to stay in the water. Brady heads out to bring Mack back in, but the two get caught in the large wave. The two manage to reach the surface, and are shocked to find themselves in what seems to be the set for Wet Side Story. Brady embraces it immediately, while Mack thinks they’ve died. The two stick out, and the surfers don’t take well to outsiders. The bikers then enter the bar where the bikers and surfers hang, and find themselves in the middle of a surf and turf war. Brady explains what’s going on to Mack, who is still nonplussed by the situation. Brady then continues to insert himself into the musical numbers while Mack watches, impressed.

Mack is once again thrown by the fact that they are stuck in the 1960s as she needs to get on a plane to the East, and Brady thinks that there needs to be storm to get them home. Mack and Brady end up at the shindig at Big Momma’s, the surfer and biker joint, when the bikers crash the party. Mack is frustrated at Brady’s attitude at the party, and the pair finds themselves dancing. Unfortunately, Mack and Brady end up changing the film, where the two leads, Lela and Tanner, end up falling for Brady and Mack instead of each other. The movie is then thrown off course, and Mack and Brady realize that they’ve changed everything. The two head to the secret hideout of the movie’s villain, Les Camembert, who has created a large weather altering machine. If Mack and Brady don’t fix the film, then the two won’t be able to get home. Brady and Mack come up with a plan to get Tanner and Lela fall for each other instead of them.

Mack ends up at the biker girls’ sleepover, and she questions why the girls let boys decide everything for them. Meanwhile, Brady hangs out with the surfer guys at Big Momma’s, and finds that Tanner doesn’t care if a girl is a surfer or a biker, so long as she has something special. Mack ends up with a biker chick makeover, much to Brady’s amusement. Mack worries that they will remain stuck in the film, but Brady wants to stay because the two of them can stay together. Mack and Brady try to get Lela and Tanner to end up alone so they can get to know each other as people. Mack develops a friendship with Lela, who opens up to Mack with a big secret: she wants to surf. She convinces Lela to start surfing, and offers to have Brady teach her. Meanwhile, Les Camembert is testing his weather altering machine with his assistant, Dr. Fusion, which causes Mack and Brady to panic, as the storm is approaching. The situation is even worse when the two realize they are becoming part of the film, and burst into an involuntary musical number.

As Mack and Brady work on a plan, they are attacked by Les Camembert; meanwhile, Lela and Tanner meet by chance and start falling for each other, realizing that they’re meant to be before realizing that Mack and Brady must be in trouble. Mack and Brady are held captive in the lighthouse, and Lela and Tanner ask for everyone’s help in Big Momma’s, begging for everyone to work together to stop Les Camembert’s plans. Once the surfers and bikers see how much in love Lela and Tanner are, they have no choice but to work together. In the lighthouse, Mack finally admits that she doesn’t want to leave Brady and head to private school. The bikers and surfers show up just in time to save the day, and cause the machine to blow, creating the massive storm needed to get Mack and Brady back home. Lela and Tanner ask them to stay, and Lela gives Mack a special friendship necklace. Finally, Brady and Mack are able to take the giant wave back home, having saved the film. Mack then gets a chance to ride the forty-foot swell, and nails it. In the end, Mack tells her aunt that she doesn’t want to go, and want to stay with Brady and her grandfather, and make her own decisions. The movie ends with a big musical number on the beach.
