July 28, 2002 – The Princess Storybook Breakfast Begins in Norway’s Restaurant Akershus

“Her Highness the Queen is holding a feast in honor of the world’s best-loved Storybook Princesses – and you’re invited!”

On July 28, 2002, the Princess Storybook Breakfast character dining experience began in the Norway Pavilion’s Restaurant Akershus. Guests make reservations for the dining experience, where they can meet a host of Disney characters, including Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Aurora, Ariel, and Mary Poppins. After dining, guests can take pictures with the Disney princesses and take home to photos as complimentary keepsakes. The breakfast became so popular that it was expanded to include lunch and dinner in 2005.

July 24, 1989 – Tony’s Town Square Restaurant Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

“Everybody loves Italian, but this is no ordinary Italian restaurant! It’s where Lady and the Tramp had their first kiss.”

On July 24, 1989, the casual dining restaurant Tony’s Town Square Restaurant opened in the Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World, taking the place of the Town Square Café. Named after the restaurant featured in the animated feature Lady and the Tramp, the restaurant features several pieces of décor that pay homage to the couple, including a fountain depicting the canine pair. The restaurant features an Italian menu, including shrimp scampi and the ever popular spaghetti and meatballs.

July 17, 1955 – The Carnation Ice Cream Parlor Opens on Disneyland’s Main Street

On July 17, 1955, the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor opened on Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. It is one of the only restaurants remaining from Disneyland’s opening day. In 1977, an outdoor dining area was added to the restaurant, and in 1997, the restaurant was expanded and turned into the Carnation Café, serving American-style cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

July 12

July 12, 1998 – The First ESPN Zone Restaurant Opens in Baltimore, Maryland

On July 12, 1998, the first ESPN Zone restaurant opened in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by openings in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Washington DC, Anaheim, Las Vegas, and Denver. This was Disney’s first major commercial venture outside the theme parks, and was a sports restaurant complex based on the channel ESPN. The restaurant became well-known for its “Ultimate Couch Potato” contest, where customers competed to see who could out-sit each other while watching non-stop sports programming. The Atlanta and Denver restaurants closed in 2009, while the others, save for the one in Anaheim, closed in June, 2010.

July 3, 1984 – The Restaurant Bistro de Paris Opens in Epcot’s France Pavilion

On July 3, 1984, the table-service restaurant Bistro de Paris opened in the France Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase. Thanks to the popularity of the pavilion’s first restaurant, Les Chefs de France, it was decided by executives to add another restaurant in the empty space in Les Chefs upstairs area. The restaurant was similar to Les Chefs in that it served fine French cuisine, with standard dishes including filet mignon and crème brulee. On July 31, 2012, the restaurant was closed; it reopened in December as Monsieur Paul.

July 2, 1993 – The Dinner Theater Area Aladdin’s Oasis Opens in Disneyland

On July 2, 1993, the dinner theater-style entertainment area Aladdin’s Oasis opened in Disneyland, replacing the Tahitian Terrace. The show was released to capitalize on the success of the 1992 animated feature film. The area gave guests a show filled with songs and dances by characters from the film while they enjoyed Americanized-versions of Middle Eastern food, including papadam wafers and tabbouleh. The show was discontinued after a couple of years, but the restaurant was still in operation until 1997, when it became a storytelling area; it has since become a meet-and-greet area where guests can meet Aladdin and Jasmine.

June 28, 1988 – The Walt Disney World Restaurant Narcoossee’s Opens in the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

On June 28, 1988, the signature dining restaurant Narcoossee’s opened its doors from its location in Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The restaurant’s menu serves a selection of seafood and steak, including whole-steamed Maine lobster, one of Narcoossee’s famous delicacies. The restaurant features a business casual dress code, requesting that guests do not wear tank tops, swim suits, and shirts with offensive language or graphics. Guests are given a view of the Magic Kingdom, and in the evening, are able to view the Wishes fireworks show from their table; the restaurant plays the music for the show to give guests the experience of the show while they dine.

 

June 15

June 15, 2012 – Cars Land Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

On June 15, 2012, the themed expansion area of Disney’s California Adventure, Cars Land, opened. Designed to resemble Radiator Springs from the hit Disney-Pixar Movie, the 12-acre area features several attractions and dining options. One attraction, Radiator Springs Racers, takes guests through the area, letting them view all parts of Radiator Springs while racing against each other. Highlights include Luigi’s Flying Tires (similar to the Flying Saucers attraction from the early days of Disneyland), Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and Flo’s V8 Café.

June 4, 1990 – The Quick Service Restaurant The Bengal Barbecue Opens in Disneyland’s Adventureland

On June 4, 1990, the quick-service restaurant The Bengal Barbecue opened in Disneyland’s Adventureland. The restaurant features “jungle skewers” in several varieties, including beef, chicken, and vegetable. The restaurant also features several other snacks, including a fruit cup and a Mickey Mouse pretzel. It has received relatively good reviews from park guests.

May 22, 1998 – The Tomorrowland Restaurant Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port Opens in Disneyland

“Come out of orbit and refuel at this futuristic quick-service ‘spaceport’ where you’ll find out of this world Italian fare.”

On May 22, 1998, the quick-service restaurant Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The restaurant was built in the location of the former attraction Mission to Mars, and retains some of the area’s early elements, including original posters of past Tomorrowland attractions, and a replica of the original Moonliner rocketship. Guests can stop at one of three stations for food: pizza, pasta, and salads, with menus featuring Orion Hawaiian Pizza and Countdown Chicken Fusilli.
