November 26, 2014 – Disney Announces Deal with Turner Classic Movies

“Disney films and other programming have been seen a little bit on TCM, but not much. It will be exciting to dig into the vault and see classic Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, [and] ‘The Wonderful World of Disney.’”

On November 26, 2014, the Walt Disney Company formally announced an agreement with Turner Classic Movies (TCM), creating a deal that would benefit both media companies. TCM would help update and sponsor the Hollywood Studios attraction The Great Movie Ride, while Disney would present vintage shows and movies from the Disney Vault in a special programming block on the classic cable channel called “Treasures from the Disney Vault.” Disney and TCM have worked together in several situations prior to the deal, including a TCM Classic Cruise on the Disney Magic cruise ship, as well as a joint hosting of the screening of Mary Poppins at the El Capitan Theatre; however, this was TCM’s first foray into experiential marketing, particularly with their inclusion in The Great Movie Ride attraction.

November 25, 1992 – The Toontown Railroad Station Opens in Disneyland

On November 25, 1992, the Toontown Railroad Station opened in Disneyland. The area, originally named Fantasyland Station, was created as part of the Disneyland Railroad loop expansion, which also included Tomorrowland. It was then named the Videopolis Railroad Station when the area was opened in 1985, and became the Toontown Station once Toontown was established. The area is located between it’s a small world.

November 23, 1989 – The Sweets Shop Delizie Italiane Opens in Epcot

On November 23, 1989, the specialty sweets shop Delizie Italiane opened in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion within the World Showcase. It features Italian favorites, such as world-famous Perugina chocolate bars and Baci chocolates with hazelnuts wrapped in love notes, along with other Italian chocolates and candies. The store is sponsored by Perugina, and took the place of Arcata d’Antigiani.

November 22

November 22, 1991 – The Beauty and the Beast Live Show Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“Relive the romance and magic of the ‘tale as old as time’ in this lush stage performance.”

On November 22, 1991, the Beauty and the Beast live stage show opened in Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios). Based on, and used to promote, the animated feature film that would go on to critical acclaim, the 25 minute show features actors in elaborate costumes with intricate sets. The show was popular enough to have a version open in Disneyland’s Videopolis on April 11, 1992, and at Disneyland Paris on December 31, 1992; the show was also popular enough to warrant the creation of a Broadway musical. While the Disneyland and Disneyland Paris productions would eventually close, the Walt Disney World version is still running as of 2016.

November 21, 1994 – The 3D Film Attraction Honey, I Shrunk the Audience Opens in Epcot

On November 21, 1994, the 3D film attraction Honey, I Shrunk the Audience opened in Epcot’s Future World area. Based on the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, guests are sent to Wayne Szalinski’s award ceremony at the Imagination Institute, and are shrunk by his infamous shrinking ray. Guests then explore the world in their diminutive state, including facing a dog and a child. The attraction was popular enough to be opened in Disneyland on May 22, 1998. A version of the attraction known as MicroAdventure was created for and opened in Tokyo Disneyland on April 15, 1997; another version known as Chérie, J’ai Rétréci le Public opened in Disneyland Paris on March 28, 1999. The Walt Disney World attraction closed on May 9, 2010.

November 20

November 20, 1989 – Minnie Mouse $10 is Added to Disney Dollars

“Disney Dollars may be spent or collected and saved as souvenirs and are redeemable at any time before or after any period of inactivity.”

On November 20, 1989, a new $10 bill featuring Minnie Mouse was added to the Disney Dollar currency that was used within the Disney Parks. Though Disney Dollars had been circulated since May of 1987, it had only featured the $1 and $5. A $50 bill would be added in 2005 for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Disneyland; all the dollars were discontinued on May 14, 2016.

November 17

November 17, 2011 – Toy Story Land Opens in Hong Kong Disneyland

“And you can experience the feeling of being shrunk to the size of a toy in Andy’s backyard to play with your favorite Toy Story friends.”

On November 17, 2011, the Toy Story themed area Toy Story Land opened in Hong Kong Disneyland. It was the first of three themed areas of the park, with Grizzly Gulch opening in 2012, and Mystic Point opening in 2013. Based on the hit series from Pixar, the area gives guests the feeling of being one of Andy’s toys. There, guests can meet characters Woody and Jessie, join the Toy Soldiers in a “boot camp,” or ride RC on a fast-paced roller coaster ride.

November 13

November 13, 1998 – The Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On November 13, 1998, the Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Fantasyland. Themed after the animated feature Alice in Wonderland, the restaurant features Western cuisine, featuring flank steak with a Japanese-style sauce, swordfish steak with a tomato caper sauce, and heart-shaped strawberry mousse. The restaurant is set up buffet-style, making it easy for guests to select their dish for a quick dining service.

November 9

November 9, 1993 – The Fountainview Espresso & Bakery Opens in Epcot

“Indulge in an all-new view of this Future World favorite!”

On November 9, 1993, the Fountainview Espresso & Bakery opened in Epcot’s Innoventions West area. The quick service restaurant features a selection of coffee drinks, baked goods, and ice cream; when Starbucks products were introduced into the park, Fountainview was revamped to offer Starbucks coffee and bakery items.

October 30, 1996 – Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet Restaurant Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Hungry Space Rangers needn’t worry, as Buzz Lightyear is to the rescue with an out of this world all-you-can-eat buffet.”

On October 30, 1996, the buffet restaurant Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet Restaurant opened in Disneyland Paris’s Discoveryland area. Designed after the restaurant in the Toy Story series, guests can help themselves to servings of pizza, pasta, salads, and a variety of desserts, with help from Space Rangers in brightly colored outfits.
