March 4, 1962 – The Restaurant Don DeFore’s Silver Banjo Closes in Disneyland

“Down on New Orleans Street Over in Frontierland Near Tom Sawyer Island is Don DeFore’s Silver Banjo in Enchanting Disneyland. Finest Barbecue this side of the Mississippi!”

On March 4, 1962, the Frontierland food facility Don Defore’s Silver Banjo closed in Disneyland. Opening on June 15, 1957, the restaurant was named after the actor Don DeFore, who was best known for playing “Thorny” Thornberry on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett and for playing George Baxter on Hazel. The facility mostly provided barbecue dishes. It was closed to allow the expansion of the Aunt Jemima Pancake House.

March 2, 1976 – Walt Disney World Welcomes 50-Millionth Guest

On March 2, 1976, Walt Disney World welcomed its 50-millionth guest to the park. 13-year-old Susan Brummer from Virginia was the lucky guest welcomed in. This was quite a feat for the park, as it had only been open under five years. Tourism continued to grow for the parks at this stage, as new attractions and resort locations were added every year to keep interest high. The 100-millionth guest would arrive at the park only three years later.

February 26, 1991 – The Prairie Outpost and Supply Opens in Frontierland

On February 26, 1991, the specialty shop Prairie Outpost and Supply opened in Frontierland of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The shop sells snacks and candy, as well as special baked goods and Disney’s famous character apples.

February 24, 1985 – Disney Clothiers Opens in Walt Disney World

On February 24, 1985, the clothing store Disney Clothiers opened on Main Street of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. A version of this store also opened in Disneyland a month later, while the Disneyland Paris version opened on April 12, 1992. The store specializes in apparel for guests of all ages, as well as a variety of accessories.

February 21, 2004 – Snow White – An Enchanting New Musical Has Premiere at Fantasyland Theater

“Live on stage at Disneyland!”

On February 21, 2004, the elaborate stage show Snow White – An Enchanting New Musical had a premiere at Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theater, two days before its official opening. It was the most elaborate stage production to be held at that theater at the time, and was produced exclusively for the park. The musical ran until 2006 when it was replaced by the Disney Princess Fantasy Faire. The show was free with park admission. It was directed by Eric Schaeffer, with the show adapted by Norman Allen and Darrah Cloud. It originally starred Anne Warren as Snow White, Stuart Ambrose as the Prince, Elizabeth Wardland as the Queen, Lisa Wolpe as the Hag, and featured the voice of Patrick Stewart as the Magic Mirror.

February 20, 2002 – New Madame Leota Tombstone is Placed in Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion

“Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all, in regions beyond now, but having a ball.”

On February 20, 2002, it was reported that a new interactive feature was added to the Haunted Mansion attraction in Walt Disney World: a gravestone honoring Madame Leota. The tombstone features a dimensional bust of  the ghostly medium, and features her blinking and staring at guests at random intervals; her tombstone is the last one seen before guests enter the mansion.

February 18, 2008 – Disney’s Vero Beach Honors Baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda

“Disney’s Vero Beach has enjoyed a tremendous relationship with Tommy Lasorda and the Los Angeles Dodgers through the years, and we’re absolutely thrilled to name such a central part of our resort in Mr. Lasorda’s honor.” – Sonya Deese-Byrnes, General Manager of Disney Vacation Club Resorts

On February 18, 2008, a special ceremony was held at Disney’s Vero Beach resort, a Disney Vacation Club resort in Walt Disney World. This ceremony honored former Los Angeles Dodgers’ former manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda by renaming the recreation field of the resort as Lasorda Field; the Dodgers have used Vero Beach as a training area, with the Dodgertown training complex opening in 1948. Lasorda was on hand at the renaming ceremony to throw out the first pitch on the field, and was joined at the ceremony by several representatives from the Walt Disney Company, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and children from the local Boys & Girls Club.

February 17, 1960 – The Space Station X-1 Exhibit Closes in Disneyland

“See America from Outer Space”

On February 17, 1960, the Space Station X-1 exhibit, located in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, officially closed. One of the park’s original opening day attractions, the exhibit gave guests a view of the Earth from what was eventually called the “Satellite View of America.” This scenic painting of the Earth was created by artist Peter Ellenshaw.

February 13, 1993 – Lumiere’s Kitchen Opens in Walt Disney World

On February 13, 1993, the quick service restaurant Lumiere’s Kitchen opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Replacing the Black Cauldron-themed restaurant Gurgi’s Munchies & Crunchies, the restaurant served general quick-service fare, such as chicken nuggets and grilled cheese. The restaurant closed on April 30, 2006, and was replaced by the Village Fry Shoppe.

February 11, 2011 – Mickey’s Toontown Fair Closes in Walt Disney World

On February 11, 2011, the Mickey’s Toontown Fair area closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The area originally opened on June 18, 1988 as Mickey’s Birthdayland, which was created to celebrate Mickey’s 60th birthday; after the birthday celebrations were over, it became Mickey’s Starland on May 26, 1990, and then became Mickey’s Toontown Fair on June 29, 1996. The area featured Disney character-related attractions, such as Mickey’s Country House; Minnie’s Country House; Donald’s Boat; and The Barnstomer, a Goofy-themed rollercoaster. The area was closed due to the expansion of Fantasyland, and was eventually replaced by the Storybook Circus area; however, the area reused The Barnstormer attraction, which was retooled to fit the circus theme of the area.
