September 29, 1991 – The Studio Showcase Attraction Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

On September 29, 1991, the Studio Showcase walkthrough attraction opened in Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) Park in Walt Disney World. Hosted by the American Film Institute, the attraction gave guests a chance to see a variety of exhibits that featured costumes and props from famous films after going through the Studio Backlot Tour Guests also could buy items from a gift shop in the same location. The attraction closed on August 16, 2014.

September 24, 1986 – The Shop La Boutique des Provinces Opens in Epcot

On September 24, 1986, the specialty shop La Boutique des Provinces opened in the Canada Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase. It sold special upscale gifts, such as jewelry, perfume, and ornaments, from French Canada. It was located within the Hôtel du Canada, the main structure used to represent the Canadian pavilion. The store closed around 2005.

September 9, 1973 – The Attraction General Electric Carousel of Progress Closes in Disneyland

“There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away.”

On September 9, 1973, the Tomorrowland attraction General Electric Carousel of Progress closed in Disneyland, preparing for a move to the new Walt Disney World Park in Orlando, Florida. The attraction, originally operating as a marketing attraction for General Electric at the 1964-1965 New York’s World’s Fair, had operated in Disneyland since the summer of 1967, and was replaced by another Audio-Animatronic show called America Sings. The area it once occupied is now inhabited by the Tomorrowland Expo Center, which features the Star Wars Launch Bay and the Super Hero HQ, while the Carousel of Progress attraction still operates in Walt Disney World.

August 23, 2001 – The Power of Blast! Show Closes in Epcot

On August 23, 2001, the special show The Power of Blast! played its final performance at the America Gardens Theatre in Epcot. Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway show Blast!, the abbreviated version of the show originally premiered on June 16, 2001. The show was a brass and percussion routine, playing a variety of genres and using surprise visual implements, such as flags and sabers. Guests could also purchase dinner packages where they could book dinner at a restaurant and have preferred seating for the show. The show was eventually moved to Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater and ran from November 22, 2001, September 2, 2002.

August 22, 1956 – The Carefree Corner Opens in Disneyland

On August 22, 1956, the Carefree Corner guest registration area opened on Disneyland’s Main Street. As guests traveled from all over the world to visit the park, the area contained special guest books for each state in the United States, along with several other countries, in which guests could sign. The area also acted as the main information hub on Main Street, offering guests guidebooks when they were first made available in 1965. The area closed in 1985, and was replaced with Card Corner until 1988, when it picked up the Carefree Corner moniker again until 1994.

August 21, 1995 – The PeopleMover Attraction Closes

“Ride tomorrow’s transportation…today!”

On August 21, 1995, the PeopleMover attraction in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland closed. Originally opening in 1967, and given major updates in 1977 and 1982 (with the latter promoting the movie Tron), the attraction was eventually closed as it seemed no longer an innovative attraction keeping with Tomorrowland’s theme of the future. A similar attraction was opened in Walt Disney World in 1975, originally called the WEDway PeopleMover (renamed to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority in 1994). The Disneyland attraction’s technology was replicated in the Houston International Airport for their PeopleMover.

August 15, 2009 – The Restaurant Kouzzina by Cat Cora Opens in Walt Disney World

“The cuisine at Kouzzina…showcases Mediterranean cuisine and Chef Cora’s philosophy to create simple yet sensational meals.”

On August 15, 2008, the restaurant Kouzinna by Cat Cora opened in Walt Disney World’s Boardwalk area. Replacing the restaurant Spoodles, the restaurant was created by Iron Chef Cat Cora, and features a Mediterranean-style cuisine inspired by Cora’s own Greek heritage. The restaurant’s name, Kouzzina, means “kitchen” in Greek. The restaurant closed on September 30, 2014, and was replated by Trattoria al Forno.

August 12, 2012 – The Princess Fantasy Faire Attraction Closes

“Where happily ever after happens every day.”

On August 12, 2012, the Princess Fantasy Faire attraction in Disneyland closed. Open since October 6, 2006, the area provided guests with a chance to meet the Disney princesses, and was located right next to Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Guests were also able to participate in an interactive storytelling experience with a princess, and learn how to be a true princess or a knight in a coronation ceremony. The area was replaced in March 2013 with the Fantasy Faire, which gave guests more ease in meeting the princesses and watching a show.

August 11, 1955 – Casa de Fritos Opens in Disneyland

“Enjoy delicious Mexican foods at Casa de Fritos”

On August 11, 1955, the restaurant Casa de Fritos opened in Disneyland’s Frontierland. Serving Mexican food, the restaurant was famed for its specialty vending machine where kids could get a bag of Fritos chips by the Frito Kid. Guests could order dishes such as Frito Chili Pie for 55 cents, three tamales for 35 cents, and a Mexican combination plate for only $1.00; Fritos were provided for free with every dish. The restaurant was given an upgrade and a new name – Casa Mexicana – on October 1, 1982, and would go on to become Rancho del Zocalo on February 6, 2001.

August 9, 2015 – The Walt Disney World Speedway Closes

“Live out your racing fantasy at the Disney Speedway!”

On August 9, 2015, after operating for almost twenty years, the Walt Disney World Speedway closed. Located in a corner near Magic Kingdom Park, the racetrack was used for speed racing events, including a Formula Ford 2000 support race; the track was also used for the Richard Petty Driving Experience, which gave guests the chance to sit behind the wheel of a stock car and race down the track. The track has since been demolished to make way for transportation upgrades for Magic Kingdom Park guests.
