September 10, 2012 – The Daytime Talk Show Katie Premieres on ABC

On September 10, 2012, the daytime talk show Katie premiered in syndication on ABC. The show was hosted by former ABC correspondent Katie Couric, who used the show to talk about a variety of issues, which Couric described as “…the news and issues that I think people care about, whether it’s bullying or the effect technology has on our kids.” ABC affiliates were encouraged to air the program at 3pm EST. Although the show was the number one new syndicated talk show of the 2012-2013 season, ABC and Couric mutually decided to cancel the show on December 19, 2013, with the last episode premiering on July 30, 2014.

September 9, 2011 – Robert Chapek Named President of Disney Consumer Products

On September 9, 2011, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger announced the promotion of Robert Chapek to President of Disney Consumer Products. The naming of Chapek came at the time of the formation of the consolidated consumer products organization, combining the retail lines within the Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, Marvel, and the related consumer and interactive product lines. Chapek was promoted from being the President of Distribution, a role which was then assumed by Alan Bergman, the President of the Walt Disney Studios.

September 3, 2014 – A Western Lowland Gorilla is Born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

On September3, 2014, a western lowland male gorilla was born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom; this was the second birth of this gorilla species within the past month. The baby was born to mother Kashata and father Gino, with Gino also being the father of the gorilla born earlier in August. These arrivals mark the fourth and fifth gorillas born within Animal Kingdom, with the care and conservation done in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.

August 24, 2014 – Newsies Has its Final Performance on Broadway

On August 24, 2014, the Broadway musical Newsies had its final performance, capping a successful two and a half year run with  1,004 performances. The show was profitable for Disney, recouping its $5 million investment in the first seven months of the show’s run; Disney had a strong need to recover after the disappointments of Tarzan and The Little Mermaid, and went on to win two Tony Awards: Best Score and Best Choreography. Although the Broadway show came to an end, the national tour would launch later that year in October. At the production’s end, the show featured Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Liana Hunt as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Chapathia Jenkins as Medda, Andy Richardson as Crutchie, and Luca Padovan and Zachary Unger as alternating actors for Les.

August 18, 2013 – Disney Infinity is Launched in New York City

On August 18, 2013, the action-adventure game Disney Infinity was officially released, with a launch event held in New York City’s Times Square at the end of “summer road trip” for the game. The launch event featured game demos, giveaways, and special guest appearances, including that of Chrissie Fit from Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie. The game was also available for purchase at stores nationwide n this date, with the first sets of characters from the films Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Monsters University, Cars, and The Lone Ranger.

August 10, 2013 – Eight New Disney Legends are Inducted at the D23 Expo

On August 10, 2013, at the D23 Expo, Chairman and CEO Bob Iger and host Tom Bergeron presented the next eight inductees into the Disney Legends line, joining 249 others that have been recognized for their contributions to the Disney legacy. The 2013 inductees included Imagineers Tony Baxter and Collin Campbell, television personality Dick Clark, actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman, Apple founder Steve Jobs, animator Glen Keane, and comedian Ed Wynn. For those still living, the honorees were brought to the stage to be given a special trophy and to say a few words about their career or time with Disney. A special presentation was held for those that had passed away prior to the awards.

August 6, 2010 – The Disney Magic Cruise Ship Saves 18 People Lost at Sea

“The shipboard team heard crew members from two other vessels talking on the radio…the Disney Magic then joined the search and quickly spotted the small boat, which had lost power.”

On August 6, 2010, the crew aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship made the news for saving 18 Algerians who had been considered lost at sea almost five days prior. The Algerians had been voyaging in the Mediterranean, when their ship had lost power. The Disney Magic had heard the situation over the radio as they were sailing between Gibraltar and Barcelona, and spotted the ship. The crew managed to take the survivors onboard and give them meals and cabins, taking them to the final destination of Barcelona.

August 5, 2010 – The Restaurant Via Napoli Has Grand Opening Ceremony

“Take a culinary tour of Southern Italy at the family-friendly restaurant and pizzeria at Epcot.”

On August 5, 2010, the restaurant Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria had a special grand opening ceremony in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion, located in the World Showcase. The restaurant, operated by the Patina Restaurant Group, offers authentic Southern Italy cuisine, ranging from Neapolitan pizza to Linguine allo Scoglio, along with Italian desserts such as Zeppole di Caterina. The pizzas keep their authenticity with ingredients flown in from Italy, and water for the pizza being taken from a source within the United States that matches the alkaline found in Naples. The restaurant’s design is noted for the three wood-burning pizza ovens, made to represent the three active volcanoes in Italy: Etna, Vesuvius, and Stromboli.

July 31, 2015 – Descendants: Original TV Movie Soundtrack is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On July 31, 2015, the album Descendants: Original TV Movie Soundtrack was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack captured the songs from the Disney Channel film Descendants, starring Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, and Kristin Chenoweth; the album also features the song “Believe” by recording artist Shawn Mendes. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and peaked at number one on the Kids Albums and the Soundtrack Albums charts. It would also go on to chart on several international chart lists.

July 28, 2010 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom Celebrates International Year of Biodiversity

On July 28, 2010, to celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity, Disney’s Animal Kingdom held a special celebration at Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Special presentations were set up for guests to learn more about the ecosystem, including a meet-and-greet with different animal species, a presentation about agricultural sciences, and a display on the oceans.
