April 17, 2016 – The Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon is Held in Walt Disney World

“Follow Your Dark Side”

On April 17, 2016, the Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon was held in Walt Disney World. The celebration weekend kicked off on April 14, with the half marathon taking place on the 17th. This event, themed after the classic Star Wars series of films, was designed to be half of a Star Wars challenge, with Disneyland hosting the “Light Side” while Walt Disney World would host the “Dark Side.”  Plenty of guests dressed up in Star Wars-themed outfits and met characters from the franchise, including Stormtroopers. Jason Ryf from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the race with a time of 1:13:39, while Katie McGrath from Oakdale, New York, was the female finisher with a time of 1:24:05.

April 13, 2015 – The Restaurant The Boathouse Opens in Disney Springs

“Set sail for upscale waterfront dining at Disney Springs – complete with retro dream boats, from vintage American Amphicars to romantic Italian Water Taxis

On April 13, 2015, the upscale restaurant The Boathouse opened in Disney Springs (previously Downtown Disney). The restaurant serves American style food, from steaks to seafood, including a raw bar; it is placed at The Landing, giving guests a good view of the water as they dine. The restaurant also offers champagne and wine-tasting cruises around the restaurant in an Italian water taxi.

March 31, 2012 – The Avengers-Themed Monorail Debuts in Walt Disney World

“…our partners at Marvel Studios are bringing Marvel’s The Avengers to Walt Disney World Resort this spring!”

On March 31, 2012, the day after the official announcement on the Walt Disney Parks Blog, the newly designed Avengers-themed monorail, affectionately known as the “Avengerail,” debuted in Walt Disney World. Featuring characters played by actors Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor), the monorail promoted the film, which was scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012.

March 29, 2012 – The Smithsonian Hosts To Infinity and Beyond: Buzz Lightyear’s Journey to the Smithsonian

“Be here when Buzz Lightyear arrives at the National Air and Space Museum!”

On March 29, 2012, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC hosted an event called To Infinity and Beyond: Buzz Lightyear’s Journey to the Smithsonian, celebrating the addition of a special Buzz Lightyear figurine to the museum’s collection. The figurine, presented jointly by NASA and Pixar Animation Studios, was a special guest on the Space Shuttle Discovery that flew to the International Space Station. John Lasseter was on hand for the presentation and a special panel discussion that looked at Buzz’s journey through space. The figurine was then made part of the “Moving Beyond Earth” exhibit.

March 23, 2011 – Shareholders Elect 13 Directors of the Walt Disney Company Board

“2010 was a great year for The Walt Disney Company. It was a year of excellence – creatively, strategically, and financially.”

On March 23, 2011, Disney announced that shareholders had elected 13 members of the Board of Directors, re-electing members such as Steve Jobs, Bob Iger, and Sheryl Sandberg. The shareholders also supported recommendations from the Company’s auditor, as well as the stock incentive plan and the frequency of votes on executive compensation. Shareholders also agreed to the appointment of PricewaterhouseCoopers as the independent accountants for Fiscal Year 2011.

March 20, 2014 – The Broadway Musical Aladdin Officially Opens

“Proud of your boy, I’ll make you proud of your boy, believe me.”

On March 20, 2014, after a little over three weeks of previews, the newest Disney Broadway musical Aladdin officially opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The musical, based on the hit 1992 animated feature film, includes several of the popular musical numbers; it also features three songs that were originally cut from the film: “Proud of Your Boy,” “Babak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim,” and “High Adventure.” Four new songs were also introduced in the narrative: “These Palace Walls,” “A Million Miles Away,” “Diamond in the Rough,” and “Somebody’s Got Your Back.” The show would go on to be nominated for five Tony awards, winning Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for James Monroe Iglehart’s performance as Genie. The original Broadway cast starred Adam Jacobs as Aladdin, Courtney Reed as Jasmine, James Monroe Iglehart as Genie, and Jonathan Freeman as Jafar.

March 17, 2016 – The Oasis Bar & Grill Opens in Walt Disney World

“Take a break from the sun and imbibe on some fun at this poolside retreat.”

On Ma­rch 17, 2016, the Oasis Bar & Grill poolside quick service restaurant opened in Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Village Resort. The restaurant provides guests with some light Polynesian-inspired fare, along with a selection of cocktails, beer and wine, and other non-alcoholic beverages.

March 6, 2012 – The Disney Fantasy Arrives at Port Canaveral

“Welcome home, Disney Fantasy!”

On March 6, 2012, the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line Fleet, the Disney Fantasy, pulled into its home port of Port Canaveral to prepare for its maiden voyage to the Caribbean at the end of the month. The ship sailed almost 5,000 miles from Bremerhaven, Germany, and was greeted with fireworks and a parade of guests.

March 3, 2013 – The Broadway Musical Mary Poppins Plays its Final Performance

On March 3, 2013, the Broadway musical Mary Poppins played its final performance at the New Amsterdam Theatre, after 2,619 performances over six years. The final performance featured Steffanie Leigh as Mary Poppins, Nicolas Dromard as Bert, Karl Kenzler as George Banks, and Megan Osterhaus as Winifred Banks.

February 28, 2016 – Inside Out Wins Academy Award for Best Animated Feature

On February 28, 2016, the 88th Annual Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Nominated for two awards, the Pixar animated feature Inside Out scored one award in the form of Best Animated Feature. The film won against such films as Paramount Pictures’ Anomalisa, Espaço Filmes Boy and the World, Aardman Animations’ Shaun the Sheep Movie, and Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie was There.
