July 16, 2005 – Space Mountain Reopens After Major Rebuild

On July 16, 2005, the Disneyland version of the attraction Space Mountain reopened after a two-year major refurbishment. This rebuild included replacing the entire track, new special effects, and a completely revamped queue line. This reopening coincided with the park’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and featured a brand new storyline. The next major revamp of the attraction would occur in 2015, with the Star Wars-themed overlay called Hyperspace Mountain.

July 15, 2005 – Disney Announces Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage Attraction

“The submarines are coming back to Disneyland in an all-new adventure.” – President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Jay Rasulo

On July 15, 2005, Disney officially announced that the attraction Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage was going to be built in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. This was one of the first major theme park projects for the then-new CEO Bob Iger, and was a reimagining of the popular Submarine Voyage attraction built in 1959. The attraction was notable for bringing the world of Finding Nemo to the attraction, combining 3D animation with the reality of the underwater world. The attraction would officially open on June 11, 2007.

July 13, 2006 – The Attraction Autopia Opens in Hong Kong Disneyland

On July 13, 2006, the Tomorrowland attraction Autopia opened in Hong Kong Disneyland. It was the fifth version of the original race track attraction, with the first Autopia opening in Disneyland on July 17, 1955. The Hong Kong Disneyland version opened as part of the park’s first expansion, featuring electric cars and special lighting effects. The attraction closed on June 11, 2016, to make way for a new Marvel-themed attraction.

July 11, 2008 – Lea Salonga Performs at Disney Concert Hall

“Best known for originating the role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, Lea Salonga is also a bona fide ‘Disney Princess.’”

On July 11, 2008, singer, actress, and Disney Legend Lea Salonga performed a solo concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. Salonga, an acclaimed veteran of the Broadway stage, performed as a singer in Disney animated feature films Mulan and Aladdin; she performed these songs, along with a variety of songs from her Broadway performances and Tagalog favorites, during this concert. This one-night-only concert, much like her debut at Carnegie Hall, was a sold-out show.

July 8, 2008 – The Themed Store Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On July 8, 2008, the popular shop Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique opened in Tokyo Disneyland. Originally opening in Walt Disney World on April 5, 2006, the store is a salon that styles girls to look like princesses. Little girls can pick from one of seven packages, ranging from being styled like Anna and Elsa from Frozen, to a premium Cinderella package that features a special dress. This was the third version of the salon to open in Disney parks, with others opening in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland.

July 6, 2006 – High School Musical is Nominated for Six Primetime Emmy Awards

On July 6, 2006, the nominations for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. The Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical was awarded with six nominations: Outstanding Choreography (for Kenny Ortega, Charles Klapow, and Bonnie Story); Outstanding Children’s Program (for Don Schain, Bill Borden, and Barry Rosenbush); Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Special (for Kenny Ortega); Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Special (for Jason La Padura and Natalie Hart); Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics (for “Get’cha Head in the Game”), and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics (for “Breaking Free”). The television movie would eventually win two of these awards: Outstanding Choreography, and Outstanding Children’s Program.

June 25, 2005 – The Ward Kimball Steam Engine is Put Into Service in Disneyland

“Also, unlike the other engines, it was named not for an icon of the railroad, but for an icon of the Walt Disney Company.”

On June 25, 2005, the number 5 engine, the Ward Kimball, was officially put into service as part of the Disneyland Railroad. It was the first new engine to be added to the railroad in almost 50 years, and was named for Nine Old Men member and railroad enthusiast Ward Kimball; Kimball’s love of trains inspired Walt Disney’s love of railroads. The engine would be dedicated on February 15, 2006, as a part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Disneyland. The engine itself was operated by Kimball’s grandson, Nate Lord, an engineer for the Disneyland Railroad.

June 22, 2004 – The Special Edition Soundtrack of The Cheetah Girls is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“I don’t wanna be like Cinderella, sitting in a dark, cold, dusty cellar.”

On June 22, 2004, the album The Cheetah Girls – Special Edition Soundtrack was released through Walt Disney Records. This album was an updated version of the original soundtrack, which was released nearly a year prior on August 12, 2003; the special edition features karaoke versions of the movie tracks, as well as remixes of “Cinderella” and “Girl Power.”

June 10, 2008 – Disney Announces Plans to Stream Movies Online

The Wonderful World of Disney, the venerable prime-time TV show originally hosted by Walt Disney himself, is getting its geek on.”

On June 10, 2008, Disney.com released a statement that they planned to stream several of the studio’s full-length feature films online. The announced plan was that these films would be shown on the Saturday night program The Wonderful World of Disney, and then be shown for free on the online platform. The schedule included Pixar favorites Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc., as well as films Haunted Mansion, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Princess Diaries 2, Freaky Friday, and Peter Pan.

June 9, 2007 – The Attraction Cars Quatre Roues Rallye Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Rev up your engines and zoom alongside Lightning McQueen in this speedy circuit from the world of Cars.

On June 9, 2007, the Toon Studios attraction Cars Quatre Roues Rallye opened in Disneyland Paris’ Walt Disney Studios Park. Based on the Pixar film franchise Cars, guests board cars that spin around in a Radiator Springs service station area; the spinning ability is similar to the Mad Tea Party attraction found in most Disney parks.
