January 25

January 25, 2003 – Cinderellabration: Lights of Romance Show Begins in Tokyo Disneyland

On January 25, 2003, the nighttime show Cinderellabration: Lights of Romance began performing in Tokyo Disneyland. The show was created as part of Tokyo Disneyland’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations, and told the story of how Cinderella was finally crowned as a princess. Many characters made an appearance within the show, including Snow White, Aurora, Belle, and of course, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. After the 20th anniversary celebrations ended, the show became a winter show, starting in 2003, as part of an overall Cinderellabration event that was held until 2008. A daytime version of the show premiered at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park on March 17, 2005.

January 22, 2006 – A Blue Carpet Premiere is Held for Monster’s Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!

On January 22, 2006, a special ceremony was held to celebrate the grand opening of the new Disneyland attraction Monster’s Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!. Called a “blue carpet” premiere (in honor of Sulley’s blue fur), several celebrities were on hand to experience the new attraction, including Disney Channel star Ashley Tisdale, actress Lisa Kudrow, and actor Patrick Warburton. Located in Disney’s California Adventure, the attraction was meant to provide more family-friendly entertainment, alongside other Pixar-themed attractions and entertainment.

January 21, 2004 – Disney Sells Celebration Town Center to Lexin Capital

On January 21, 2004, The Walt Disney Company sold the downtown area of the city of Celebration to Lexin Capital for an undisclosed sum, though it was estimated that the cost was at least $42 million. The self-contained city was built in Walt Disney World’s property, and first opened on June 18, 1996, when the first residents moved in. It was Disney’s first experiment with urban planning, and the sale gave Lexin Capital 18 acres, featuring retail stores, restaurants, commercial office space, private apartments, and 6.8 acres that hadn’t been developed at the time of sale.

January 12, 2016 – The Network Freeform Begins Broadcast

On January 12, 2016, the reincarnation of ABC Family, now named Freeform, began broadcasting. This marked a change for the network as it tried to move away from the family audience to a target audience of ages 14 through 34. Programming includes series such as Grown-ish, Alone Together, and The Bold Type.

January 7, 2001 – The Disney Channel Original Series Totally Hoops Premieres

On January 7, 2001, the Disney Channel Original Series Totally Hoops premiered. It was a reality program that focused on the lives of the eleven girls of the Lady Hoopsters basketball team from Dayton, Ohio. The team moved through this series from the tryouts to the state championships, and finally to the national tournament. The only season had 16 episodes.

January 3

January 3, 2007 – The Live-Action Sitcom Series In Case of Emergency Premieres on ABC

“When life doesn’t go as planned, who would you call in case of emergency?”

On January 3, 2007, the live-action sitcom series In Case of Emergency premiered on ABC. The series followed a group of former classmates reunited through a series of personal emergencies, whose lives did not go according to their high school plans. The series was cancelled after only 12 episodes aired of the 13 season order; the 13th episode was later released in international broadcasts. The series was notable for having Jon Favreau directing the pilot episode. It starred Jonathan Silverman as Harry Kennison, David Arquette as Jason Ventress, Greg Germann as Sherman Yablonsky, Kelly Hu as Kelly Lee, Lori Loughlin as Dr. Joanna Lupone, and Jackson Bond as Dylan Kennison.

December 12, 2003 – The Quick-Service Restaurant Nautilus Galley Opens in Tokyo DisneySea

On December 12, 2003, the quick-service restaurant Nautilus Galley opened in Tokyo DisneySea’s Mysterious Island area. Built across from Captain Nemo’s submarine, this restaurant keeps in the theme of the area and offers snacks and drinks for guests to enjoy. Menu items include an assorted snack bowl, gyoza dogs, and assorted drinks. The menu also includes specialty items for the park’s events, such as items for Christmas and Halloween.

December 9, 2002 – Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular Opens in the Hyperion Theater

“Ah, the Cave of Wonders. The setting of one of our most famous legends. The tale of the magic lamp.”

On December 9, 2002, the live-action musical show Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular opened in the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure. Following the popular performance piece The Power of BLAST!, the show was a Broadway-style production of the popular animated feature film Aladdin. While the show opened in December, it had its official debut on January 17, 2003. The story follows the animated film fairly closely, with a new song written for the show by composer Alan Menken: “To Be Free.” The show closed on January 10, 2016.

December 8, 2011 – Disney Vacation Club Announces Disney’s Grand Floridan Villas

On December 8, 2011, the Walt Disney Company released an official press release confirming the rumor of the addition to Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The addition of around 147 villas to Walt Disney World’s flagship hotel was part of the Disney Vacation Club’s continued growth, and was estimated to open in late 2013. This was the 12th addition to the lineup of Disney Vacation Club properties.

On December 3, 2013, the animated series it’s a Small World: the animated series premiered on Disney.com. The series is derived from the attraction of the same name in the Disney theme parks, and included original songs by composer and Disney Legend Richard Sherman. The art style for the series was inspired by the original concept art and attraction design by artist Mary Blair. The series ran for eight episodes.
