July 23, 2003 – The Cheetah Girls Single “Cinderella” Premieres on Radio Disney

“I don’t want to be like Cinderella, sittin’ in a dark cold dusty cellar.”

On July 23, 2003, the promotional single “Cinderella” premiered on Radio Disney. Originally recorded by i5, the song was recorded by The Cheetah Girls to promote the film of the same name. It was eventually released for digital download on August 12, 2003, with the music video premiering on Disney Channel the same day. The song was also featured in the film as the band’s audition song for the talent show.

July 22, 1989 – The Display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions Closes

On July 22, 1989, the Main Street display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions permanently closed. Originally opening in 1973, the display showed proposed and planned attractions for the California theme park, complete with artists’ renderings, notes, and models by the Imagineers. This display took the place of the Legacy of Walt Disney area, as most of the items from that attraction were moved to the Walt Disney Story area. After Preview of Coming Attractions closed, it was replace by the Disneyland Showcase, a shop that, as of 2018, still stands on Main Street.

July 21, 1992 – The Boiler Room Barbecue Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On July 21, 1992, the restaurant Boiler Room Barbecue opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Adventureland. A quick-service snack counter, the restaurant originally featured, as its namesake suggests, barbecue-related foods; the restaurant was renamed Boiler Room Bites in 2003, and given a new menu. Boiler Room Bites features quick serve dishes such as shaved ice in several flavors, pork bao, and a variety of drinks.

July 20, 1997 – Le Cellier Becomes a Steakhouse

“Descend into the cozy cellar of a Canadian château for exquisite steaks and seafood specialties.”

On July 20, 1997, the restaurant Le Cellier, located in Epcot’s Canada Pavilion in the World Showcase, underwent a massive change to become a full-fledged steakhouse. Le Cellier was opened on October 1, 1982, and was a buffet and cafeteria-style restaurant; it underwent its first overhaul in 1995, featuring deli-style sandwiches and salads. The 1997 update gave the restaurant a new name (Le Cellier Steakhouse), a new menu, and a new status as a signature restaurant within Walt Disney World. It was an immediate success, and to this day it is still difficult to gain a reservation. The menu features such dishes as the Maple-brined Kurobuta Pork Porterhouse, a black angus rib-eye, and Skuna Bay Canadian salmon.

July 19, 1989 – Ub Iwerks and the Nine Old Men are Honored as Disney Legends

“Collectively, they helped establish The Walt Disney Company…the impact of their work is immeasurable.”

On July 19, 1989, the Disney Legends Award Ceremony was held at the Walt Disney Studios. The focus of the ceremony were the animators that helped make the Walt Disney Company and Disney Animation: animator and Imagineer Ub Iwerks, and Nine Old Men animators Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, Woolie Reitherman, and Frank Thomas. This group was considered the “Founders Circle” of the Walt Disney Company. Of those being honored, only Frank Thomas, Milt Kahl, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis, and Ward Kimball were alive to attend the ceremony.

July 18, 1955 – The Puffin Bakery Opens in Disneyland

On July 18, 1955, the Puffin Bakery opened on Disneyland’s Main Street. Opening the day after the park’s grand opening, the bakery featured a variety of pastries and drinks for guests to either enjoy at the shop’s window front, or take with them as they traveled through the park. The shop closed in 1960, and was replaced with the sponsored Sunkist Citrus House.

July 17, 2017 – The Copper Creek Villas & Cabins Opens in Walt Disney World

“Consider this your new go-to vacation base camp when pining for serene surroundings located just around the river bend from Magic Kingdom park.”

On July 17, 2017, the Disney Vacation Club Resort Copper Creek Villas & Cabins opened in Walt Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge Resort. With décor inspired by the history of the Pacific Northwest, the resort features several kinds of accommodations, including 26 waterfront cabins. Located on Bay Lake, the resort features two kinds of pools for guests to enjoy: the Copper Creek Springs heated pool, and the Boulder Ridge Cove pool. The resort also features several dining options, including the Artist Point restaurant and the Whispering Canyon Café.

July 16, 2005 – The Wishes Fireworks Show Begins in Disneyland Paris

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Disneyland Park proudly presents, Wishes!”

On July 16, 2005, the Wishes fireworks show kicked off in Disneyland Paris. Based on the show from Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, the Disneyland Paris version of the nighttime show ran at 11:15pm every evening, projecting images on Sleeping Beauty Castle. The show ran every summer season until it was replaced in 2008 with The Enchanted Fireworks.

July 15, 2011 – The Disney Channel Reality Series PrankStars Premieres

“Look at the, look at the look on your face!”

On July 15, 2011, the Disney Channel reality series PrankStars premiered. Hosted by Disney Channel star Mitchel Musso, it featured kids meeting their favorite Disney Channel and music stars through humorous situations planned by their friends and family, with Musso directing the actions of the star from a control center. The show’s stars ranged from Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez to pop music act Allstar Weekend. The show only aired four episodes in the United States before it was cancelled due to Musso’s driving under the influence arrest; the last two episodes aired in the United Kingdom and Latin America.

July 14, 2006 – The Musical Show Big Band Beat Opens in Tokyo DisneySea

“Enjoy the top class singers, the unforgettable dancing by the Disney Friends and more. And you’ll be wowed when Mickey Mouse hits the drums!”

On July 14, 2006, the live musical show Big Band Beat opened in Tokyo DisneySea’s Broadway Music Theater. Replacing the show Encore!, Big Band Beat was created to celebrate the park’s 15th anniversary, and features a live big bang performing jazz standards such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing” and “Take the A-Train.” Accompanying the band are dancers, singers, and appearances by several Disney characters.
