January 25, 2005 – The Soundtrack to Mulan II is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On January 25, 2005, the soundtrack to the direct-to-video animated feature Mulan II was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack features the vocals of Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Beth Blankenship, Mandy Gonzales, Gedde Watanabe, Jerry Tondo, and Harvey Fierstein; Salonga, Watanabe, Tondo, and Fierstein reprised their roles from the original Mulan. The soundtrack also features two additional songs: “Here Beside Me” by Hayley Westenra, and “(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls” by British pop girl group Atomic Kitten.

On January 24, 1927, the Alice Comedy Alice Foils the Pirates was released to theaters. It was the 42nd Alice Comedy produced, and starred Margie Gay as Alice. The short features Alice being captured by Pete, playing a pirate, who must be saved by Julius. The short has since been declared as a lost cartoon.

January 23, 1928 – The Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Short Film Neck ‘n’ Neck is Released to Theaters

On January 23, 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short film Neck ‘n’ Neck was released to theaters. It was the eleventh Oswald cartoon produced, and has since become lost. It was animated by Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising, who would go on to found the Warner Brothers and MGM animation studios. According to a few sketches found in the archives, the short was about a race between Oswald and a police car.

January 22, 2011 – Darla K. Anderson is Honored at the Annual Producers Guild Awards

On January 22, 2011, the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards were held in Los Angeles, California. The award, started by the non-profit trade group The Producers Guild of America, honors excellence in movies and films for the year. Darla K. Anderson, a producer for Pixar, took home the award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for Toy Story 3, beating out Despicable Me’s producers John Cohen, Janet Healy, and Christopher Meledandri; as well as How to Train Your Dragon’s producer Bonnie Arnold. Anderson’s work as a producer for Pixar began in 1993, and she has won several awards for producing the studio’s films, including a Golden Satellite Award and a BAFTA.

January 21, 1995 – The Lion King is Awarded Best Musical or Comedy Film at the Golden Globes

On January 21, 1995, the 52nd Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Honored with four nominations, including two in the same category for Best Original Song, the animated feature film The Lion King won three awards, including the award for the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, beating out The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Ed Wood; Four Weddings and a Funeral; and Prêt-à-Porter. Hans Zimmer wn for his score for the film, while Elton John and Tim Rice managed to take home the honor of Best Original Song with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”

January 20 2014 – The Restaurant Spice Road Table Opens in Epcot

On January 20, 2014, the Spice Road Table Restaurant officially opened in Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion in the World Showcase. The restaurant, located on the lagoon side, was inspired by authentic outdoor cafes, and provides guests a prime seat for the IllumiNations fireworks show. The Mediterranean fare includes tapas and specialties, including spicy garlic shrimp and chicken skewers. While not originally accepting the Disney Dining Plan, most plans are now accepted at the restaurant.

January 19, 2001 – The Disney Channel Original Series Lizzie McGuire Premieres

On January 19, 2001, the Disney Channel Original Series Lizzie McGuire premiered on the Disney Channel. The series followed the adventures of 13-year-old Lizzie McGuire and her friends Gordo and Miranda, while an animated version of Lizzie gives her inner thoughts in the form of a soliloquy. The show was highly popular, with several merchandising deals and a feature film released in 2003. The series ran for two seasons with 65 episodes in total. During the show’s run, it was nominated for several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program. The show was created by Terri Minsky, and starred Hilary Duff as Lizzie, Lalaine as Miranda, Adam Lamberg as Gordo, Jake Thomas as Matt, Hallie Todd as Jo, and Robert Carradine as Sam.

January 18, 1997 – Carnival Castle is Unveiled at Disneyland Paris

On January 18, 1997, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, Carnival Castle was unveiled. The castle, which is a temporary redesign of the Sleeping Beauty Castle, was styled not only to celebrate the park’s anniversary, but to promote the current Disney animated feature The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the book by French author Victor Hugo. The redesign gave the castle itself a variety of jester hats, while Central Plaza was decorated with gargoyles and renamed Gargoyle Square, and Main Street USA was covered in banners.

January 17, 2010 – Up Wins Two Golden Globe Awards

On January 17, 2010, the Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Disney Pixar’s 10th Animated Feature, won two Golden Globes: Best Animated Features, and Best Original Score. Up was the winner against animated features Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Disney’s own The Princess and the Frog. The score, composed by Michael Giacchino, was Giacchino’s third composition for the studio, and his first Golden Globe win. Director and writer Pete Docter was on hand to accept the award for Best Animated Feature.

January 16, 2011 – The Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun! Parade Premieres in Hollywood Studios

On January 16, 2011, the Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun! parade began its run in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios park. The parade was a considerably shorter version of the previous Block Party Bash Parade, with the run time lasting only about ten minutes. It featured characters from The Incredibles, A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc., Up, and Toy Story.The parade was unable to keep guest interest, and was retired on April 6, 2013.
