July 7, 2011 – The Stage Musical Aladdin Premieres at the 5th Street Theatre

5thAve_Aladdin

“New musicals have become a large part of the mission of The 5th Avenue Theatre and we are thrilled that Disney has selected our theatre to produce the premiere of this new work they have developed.” – Artistic Director and Executive Producer David Armstrong

On July 7, 2011, the stage musical version of the animated feature film Aladdin premiered at the 5th Street Theatre in Seattle, Washington. This version of the musical, which ran through July 31, 2011, was a pilot production to see if it proved itself worthy of a transfer to the Broadway stage. Also notable about this version is that it was a return to the original pitch from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman that was deemed not suitable for the original hit film, but ended up working on the stage. The cast and creative team was a mix of Broadway veterans and members of the Seattle theatre scene, including Tony-nominated director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, a veteran of the 5th Avenue Theatre. The musical eventually proved popular enough and was well-received by critics that it began the process of being retooled for the Great White Way; Broadway previews were almost three years later, with an opening date of March 20.

July 6, 1925 – The Disney Brothers Make Down Payment on Hyperion Studios

Hyperion

On July 6, 1925, Walt and Roy Disney made a down payment on Lot 21 at 2719 Hyperion Avenue, the area that would eventually become the early Walt Disney Studio (also known as Hyperion Studio). The down payment was $400, which is almost $5,500 in 2016 rates. A larger studio was necessary after the success of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, as well as making sure that the brothers’ enterprise would pay off for their growing families. After a final payment of $600 in August, the brothers and their staff would move into the completed studio in January 1926 from the Kingswell Avenue location. Some of the buildings were eventually relocated when the studio moved to Burbank, but the rest were razed in 1966, leaving no trace of the studio’s humble beginnings.

“Okay, so your seats are a little wet. Get over it! It’s still a beautiful day in America!”

On July 4, 2007, in honor of the American holiday of the 4th of July, Walt Disney World hosted a naturalization ceremony for 1,000 immigrants. Though the weather was less than pleasant, the ceremony was filled with excitement thanks to USCIC director Emilio Gonzalez, Senator Mel Martinez, and singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan, who sang the national anthem. After the official swearing-in, the new citizens on the United States and their families were led down Main Street by the Walt Disney World marching band while F-15 jets flew overhead. This is one of many times that a naturalization ceremony has been held at the Magic Kingdom.
