September 15, 1996 – Ellen’s Energy Adventure Attraction Opens in Epcot

“What is, ‘who is it?’”

On September 15, 1996, the attraction Ellen’s Energy Adventure opened in Epcot’s Universe of Energy. Originally replacing the Universe of Energy attraction, this updated attraction featured Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Nye “The Science Guy,” Jamie Lee Curtis, Alex Trebek, and Johnny Gilbert, teaching guests about how energy is produced, the current sources of energy, and the search for new, renewable sources of energy. Guests sit in a special seating area and watch a series of films, as well as an audio-animatronic diorama featuring a primeval world; the seating sections split apart at this point to move through the diorama before reassembling for the final two films. The attraction was closed on August 13, 2017, to make way for a new Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction.

September 14, 1998 – The Store Villains in Vogue Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On September 14, 1998, the villains-themed store Villains in Vogue opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The store sold a variety of goods related to popular Disney villains, such as Maleficent and Ursula, as well as goods featuring the characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas. In the summer of 2015, the store was revamped, removing the villain theme and turning it into a general merchandise stop named Reel Vogue.

August 30, 2014 – The American Idol Experience Attraction Closes

“Disney’s American Idol Experience wrapped up its roughly five-year run on Saturday, Aug. 30, with a heartwarming story straight from the fairytale handbook.”

On August 30, 2014, the Hollywood Studios attraction The American Idol Experience closed after one final performance. The winner of the final performance was a 14-year-old guest named Jessica, who won after singing a rendition of “I Want You Back” by the Jackson Five. The attraction, opening on February 14, 2009, was based on the hit FOX reality series, and had guests compete in front of a live audience for the opportunity to be a star. It was announced that the attraction was going to be closed earlier in June, with the original closing date set to be January, though unexpectedly the date was moved up.

August 29, 1992 – The Dinosaurs Live Parade Ends its Run

“I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille!”

On August 29, 1992, the Disney-MGM Studios parade and show Dinosaurs Live! ended its run. Opening on September 26, 1991, the parade featured the cast of the ABC series Dinosaurs as the “Surprise Family of the Day.” The song for the parade was a rendition of the 1988 song “Walk the Dinosaur,” originally by Was (Not Was). The parade was considered the beginning of adding the characters from the show into a larger presence within Disney-MGM Studios, but after falling ratings, these plans were cancelled. After Dinosaurs Live! ended its run, it was followed by Aladdin’s Royal Caravan.

August 23, 2013 – The Princess Fairytale Hall Marquee is Unveiled in New Fantasyland

“The hall, which is set to open this fall, will welcome princess fans into a positively regal character greeting area.”

On August 23, 2013, the marquee for the new Princess Fairytale Hall, a meet-and-greet area, was unveiled in the New Fantasyland expansion of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. This marked a major milestone in the creation of the expansion, with it set to be opened that fall. In the announcement about the hall, it was revealed that guests would be able to meet princesses Cinderella and Rapunzel, with each accompanied by another special princess that would change every so often.

August 13, 2017 – The Great Movie Ride Attraction Closes

“A spectacular journey into the movies.”

On August 13, 2017, the Hollywood Studios attraction The Great Movie Ride officially closed. Open since May 1, 1989, the attraction was a ride-through tour that brought guests to the movies allowing them to venture into the scenes of some of the world’s most beloved films, including Alien, Mary Poppins, and Casablanca. The attraction was sponsored by Turner Classic Movies starting in 2014, featuring host and film historian Robert Osborne as the narrator through the films. The closing of this attraction makes it the final attraction from Hollywood Studios’ opening day to close.

August 11, 1994 – The Center Court Unit of Walt Disney World’s All-Star Resorts Opens

“Go the distance and don’t be afraid to celebrate your inner fan amid sporty décor starring some of your favorite Disney characters.”

On August 11, 1994, the final unit of Walt Disney World’s All-Star Resort opened. Called Center Court, and themed after the sport of tennis, it was the fifth unit for what would become the All-Stars Sports Resort. The unit of the resort features statues of Donald and his nephews playing a heated tennis match.

August 9, 1989 – The Tower of Life Debuts in Epcot

On August 9, 1989, the Tower of Life, the landmark of the newest Wonders of Life Pavilion, was put into place in Epcot. Constructed to resemble a strand of DNA, the tower was representative of the area’s focus on health and wellness. It stood at 76-feet tall, and was made of colored steel and carbon. The tower stood until 2007, when it was quickly and quietly taken down as the Wonders of Life Pavilion was closed.

August 3, 2014 – The Four Seasons Opens in Walt Disney World’s Golden Oak Community

“A Dream Come True”

On August 3, 2014, the Four Seasons resort opened within the Golden Oak residential community, located in Walt Disney World. The 298-acre space was originally sold to Four Seasosn Hotels and Resorts on August 25, 2008; the agreement was for Four Seasons to build a hotel, time share homes called Residence Club, an 18-hole championship golf course, and a series of vacation homes. The resort was designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, and featured 444-rooms, along with four restaurants: Capa, Ravello, PB&G, and Plancha. Ravello also features a character-dining experience for guests.

August 2, 2010 – The Restaurant Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria Opens in Epcot

“Discover authentic Italian cooking, including hearty pastas, fresh salads and pizzas perfected in wood-burning ovens.”

On August 2, 2010, the restaurant Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria opened in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion in the World Showcase. Showcasing the cuisine of Southern Italy, the restaurant features authentic Neapolitan pizza cooked in three wood-burning ovens named after the three volcanoes in Italy: Mount Etna, Mont Vesuvius, and Stromboli. The pizzas keep their authenticity with ingredients flown in from Italy, and water for the pizza being taken from a source within the United States that matches the alkaline found in Naples. The menu was created by famed restaurateur Nick Valenti, who spent a significant amount of time in Naples perfecting the art of making pizza. Dishes at the restaurant features Italian specialties such as Arancini, Lasagne Napoletana, and Agnello Scottadito. A grand opening ceremony and media event was held for the restaurant on August 5th.
