April 21, 2004 – Apple and Disney Announce Deal for Buena Vista Music Group Catalog

“Now iTunes users can add these timeless Disney songs to their music libraries and enjoy them wherever they go on their iPods.”

On April 21, 2004, Apple announced that they had teamed up with Disney’s Buena Vista Music Group, with Apple getting exclusive rights to the Walt Disney Records catalog, ranging from the animated feature films to featured artists in the Hollywood Records label. The catalog was added to its own genre page within the iTunes music store, labeled as “Disney.” Disney chose to work with Apple, as Apple was the leading global online music store, and provided Buena Vista Music Group another avenue to make Disney’s music accessible to consumers.

March 2, 1957 – Disneyland Records Runs an Advertisement in Billboard

“Disneyland Records presents 3 exciting new albums”

On March 2, 1957, Disneyland Records ran an advertisement in Billboard magazine. The record label was founded in 1956, and had trouble appealing to adults. This advertisement was part of Disney’s campaign to appeal to adult record buyers, rather than children, and featured records by Fess Parker, Frances Archer and Beverly Gile, and a compilation record called “Echoes of Disneyland.” With the help of record producer Tutti Camarata, Disneyland Records was able to change public perception of its output from kiddy fare to a legitimate player in the record game.

February 15, 2005 – The Compilation Album Disneymania 3 is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Wherever I wander, wherever I roam, I couldn’t be fonder of my big home.”

On February 15, 2005, the third album in the Disney cover compilation series Disneymania was released through Walt Disney Records. The album featured a variety of artists, ranging from Disney Channel stars The Cheetah Girls and Christy Carlson Romano, to American Idol stars Clay Aiken and Kimberley Locke, to bands Bowling for Soup and Jump5. Five singles were released to promote the album and Disney animated features released on home video: “Under the Sea” by Raven-Symone, “A Whole New World” by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” by The Cheetah Girls, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” by Aly & AJ, “Cruella De Vil” by Lalaine, and “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” by Jump5. The album peaked at 30 on the Billboard 200, and was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA.

November 20, 2007 – The Box Set High School Musical Hits Collection is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Limited edition six disc set perfect for the High School Musical lover in all of us!”

On November 20, 2007, the six disc compilation High School Musical Hits Collection was released through Walt Disney Records. It featured the soundtracks for the two High School Musical films of the time, two karaoke albums, and the CD+DVD version of High School Musical: The Concert. The box set was a limited edition, and has been out of print for several years.

November 11, 1997 – The Soundtrack for Flubber is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On November 11, 1997, the soundtrack for the live action feature film Flubber was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack primarily featured the score for the film, composed by Danny Elfman, along with the song “Get Down Tonight” by KC and the Sunshine Band, which is featured in the film and its trailer.

October 16, 2003 – Eleven Inductees are Honored as Disney Legends

“Today, the Walt Disney Company will celebrate, recognize and reward those who have contributed their creativity and imagination to the Disney heritage in the 2003 Disney Legends ceremony.”

On October 16, 2003, eleven members of Disney history were inducted as Disney Legends. Among those honored were comic publisher Al Taliaferro; Disney representative to New Zealand, Neil Beckett; actor Buddy Hackett; director Richard Fleischer; wife of Disney and supporter of the Disney Company, Edna Disney; advisor and trustee of the California Institute of the Arts, Harrison “Buzz” Price; former Vice President of Engineering, Design, and Production, Orlando Ferrante; composer and co-founder of Disneyland Records, Tutti Camarata; comic strip artist Floyd Gottfredson; voice actress for Cinderella, Ilene Woods; and last but not least, Lillian Disney, who performed many behind-the-scenes acts to keep the company, and her husband’s legacy, alive. Among the eleven honored, only five were alive at the time of the ceremony: Richard Fleischer, Harrison Price, Orlando Ferrante, Tutti Camarata, and Ilene Woods.

September 16, 1997 – The Soundtrack for The Jungle Book is Reissued Through Walt Disney Records

“That’s why a bear can rest at ease with just the bare necessities of life.”

On September 16, 1997, the soundtrack for the animated feature film The Jungle Book was reissued through Walt Disney Records. Along with the songs and score from the film, the reissue also includes an interview with the Sherman Brothers, demo versions of songs not used in the final version of the film, and two songs that were originally featured on the album’s original release in 1969.

On September 1, 1998, the compilation album Disney’s Greatest Pop Hits: A Decade of Radio Singles was released through Walt Disney Records. The album features songs from Disney features, with most of them played during the film credits and released on the radio as promotional singles. Artists featured on this album included Elton John, Vanessa Williams, and Donna Summer.

May 20, 2008 – The Compilation Tribute Album Disneymania 6 is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Music stars sing Disney, their way!”

On May 20, 2008, the sixth compilation tribute album in the Disneymania series, aptly titled Disneymania 6, was released through Walt Disney Records. The album mostly featured artists under the Hollywood Studios record label or featured on Disney Channel, such as Demi Lovato and Plain White T’s. The album had four promotional singles: “Cruella de Vil” by Selena Gomez, “That’s How You Know” by Demi Lovato, “Kiss the Girl” by Colbie Caillat, and “Real Gone” by Billy Ray Cyrus. The album peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200.

May 11, 2004 – The Compilation Album Mega Movie Mix is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“I’m Supergirl, and I’m here to save the world, but I wanna know who’s gonna save me?”

On May 11, 2004, the compilation album Mega Movie Mix was released through Walt Disney Records. The album features from Disney’s live action films, either in theaters or premiering on Disney Channel; this includes songs such as “Miracles Happen” by Myra from The Princess Diaries, and “Cinderella” by The Cheetah Girls from their Disney Channel Original Movie.
