July 17, 1912 – Radio and Television Personality, and Disney Legend Art Linkletter is Born

Art Linkletter

“Things work out best for the people who make the best of the way things work out.”

On July 17, 1912, Arthur Gordon Linkletter was born as Gordon Arthur Kelly in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Abandoned at only a few weeks old, he was adopted by Mary and Fulton Linkletter. At age five, his family moved to San Diego, California, and after graduating from San Diego High School, he rode the trains and did odd jobs around the country. He would then attend San Diego State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in teaching, but would end up working as a radio announcer. This humble beginning in radio led to a full-fledged career in announcing, including the shows People Are Funny (which became a television program in 1954), Art Linkletter’s House Party, and Kids Say the Darndest Things. A friend of Walt’s, Linkletter offered his services to host the live broadcast of the opening of Disneyland in 1955, as well as those of his friends Ronald Reagan and Bob Cummings. On the park’s 50th anniversary, Linkletter opened the celebrations for the “Happiest Homecoming on Earth.” Known for his work ethic, good nature, and philanthropy, he was awarded with several honorary degrees throughout his life, as well as a National Humanities Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2005, for his work in promoting Disneyland, Linkletter was awarded as a Disney Legend. In 2010, Linkletter passed away in his Los Angeles home at the age of 97.

June 22, 2009 – The ABC Family Series Make it Or Break It Premieres

MIOBI

“It’s so weird: all this work and it can be all over in one weekend.”

On June 22, 2009, the drama series Make It or Break It premiered on ABC Family. Inspired by the comedy-drama film Stick It, the series revolved around four elite gymnasts who wished to make it to the Olympics. The series lasted for three seasons with 48 episodes. It was created by Holly Sorensen, and starred Chelsea Hobbs as Emily Kmetko, Ayla Kell as Payson Keeler, Josie Loren as Kaylie Cruz, and Cassie Scerbo as Lauren Tanner.

The pilot episode begins at the Rocky Mountain Gymnastics Training Center (also known as the Rock), where several Olympic hopeful gymnasts are arriving. Best friends Payson, Kaylie, and Lauren are preparing to head to their last Nationals, though Kaylie and Lauren are looking forward to life after competing. The top three gymnasts will be heading to Nationals, with the three girls eyeing the spots. A last minute competitor named Emily joins the race, giving the three girls some anxiety, particularly Lauren. Kaylie attempts to be nice to Emily, while Lauren is rather snippy. Lauren attempts to turn Kaylie and Payson against Emily, but Kaylie and Payson would rather pay attention to their own work. Emily has a scholarship to attend The Rock, and is nervous about maintaining it. Each girl has their own troubles to work with, with each dealing with the pressure to win a spot at Nationals.

Emily ends up walking home from the Rock, and accidentally finds Kaylie making out with fellow gymnast Carter, which is a violation of the rules of the Rock. When Emily arrives home, she finds that her mother has forgotten about the National Tryouts, but Emily is able to smooth things over. Carter drives Kaylie home and wants to tell her father about their relationship, but Kaylie refuses as they should focus on Nationals. Lauren arrives at Kaylie’s, and says that her father will “take care of Emily,” making sure that she will not qualify for the team. Emily arrives at her new job to pick up her uniform, and ends up having to work a shift, keeping her late at the restaurant. She ends up making friends with fellow employee Razor, although he seems to have an immediate crush on her. The next morning, Emily oversleeps and rushes to make it to the trials. She barely manages to make it, but arrives just in time.

The competition begins, and Emily holding her own against the other three girls, though she still holds in fourth place. Lauren, known as “Queen of the Beam,” heads up to do her routine, but falls off the beam at the start, costing her some serious points. Realizing that Emily deserves a shot at top three, Payson starts cheering Emily on, with everyone joining her. Emily nails her beam routine, and nails her position in top three, crushing Lauren. Lauren decides to sabotage Emily’s vault routine, especially knowing that Emily is afraid of the vault. Unaware of the sabotage, Emily takes off, and injures herself badly on the vault. Emily doesn’t want to go to the hospital, but she is taken to rest in the back. Emily’s mom wants her to give up on her dream, but Emily refuses to quit. She is allowed to have her second vault, and sets the board herself to prevent another injury. She nails the vault, and manages to win her shot at Nationals. Lauren is hurt that she lost her spot, and decides to get it another way: by spilling the details of Kaylie’s verboten relationship with Carter. However, Emily defends Kaylie, covering for her. In the end, Lauren’s father, who funds the Rock, goes to the coach and blackmails him into taking Lauren and a few other girls to the Denver club. This leaves Kaylie, Payson, and Emily with no coach, and no hope before Nationals.

May 6, 2011 – The Disney Channel Original Series A.N.T. Farm Premieres

ANT_1

“Yeah, because, we’re studying Pygmalion in English class, and it’s easier if we act it out. See, he’s Professor Higgins, and she’s Eliza Doolittle. Eliza, do a little.”

On May 6, 2011, the Disney Channel Original Series A.N.T. Farm premiered. The series centers around a group of child prodigies in a class called the Advanced Natural Talents (A.N.T.). The series had 4.4 million viewers on its premiere, and has received several positive reviews. The series lasted three seasons with 62 episodes. It was created by Dan Signer, and starred China Anne McClain as Chyna Parks, Sierra McCormick as Olive Doyle, Jake Short as Fletcher Quimby, Stefanie Scott as Lexi Reed, Carlon Jeffery as Cameron Parks, and Aedin Mincks as Angus Chestnut.

The first episode, “TransplANTed,” begins at Webster High, where musical prodigy Chyna Parks arrives, though her brother Cameron is less than thrilled that they will attend the same school. She arrives at the A.N.T. room, for those students with Advanced Natural Talents. She meets Gibson, who acts as the tutor and counselor of the A.N.T. Farm, as it is called, where she meets other kids as talented as she is, though in very different ways. She meets classmates Olive and Fletcher, with Fletcher falling for Chyna at first sight. She also meets Lexi, the resident Queen Bee, who delights in torturing Chyna until Chyna reveals her musical talents. Chyna overhears Lexi talking about a party, and decides to crash it with Olivia and Fletcher. Unfortunately, Chyna’s father comes home and spoils their plans to sneak out that night, until Fletcher makes wax doubles of the three. They arrive at the party, and end up having a good time, though Lexi finds every reason to embarrass her, as does Cameron. Unbeknownst to Chyna, her father and Gibson have gone to her room to check on her, finding her wax double melted. At the party, Olive drinks a powerful energy drink and bumps into Fletcher, who in turn destroys the stereo. While everyone thinks the party is ruined, Chyna manages to save the day with her musical talent. Chyna’s father arrives at the party and breaks it up, taking Chyna in the back of his squad car. The next day at school, Olive and Fletcher think Chyna’s father has pulled her out of school, but they are relieved to find her there, especially since the arrival of Chyna’s father gave the A.N.T.s some newfound “street cred.”
