November 8, 1994 – The Christmas Compilation Navidad en las Américas is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On November 8, 1994, the Christmas compilation album Navidad en las Américas was released through Walt Disney Records. Translated as “Christmas in the Americas,” the album features several popular Latin American artists singing their renditions of popular Christmas songs, ranging from “Noche de paz” to “Jingle Bell Rock.” Artists on the album include Tito Puente, Placido Domingo, and Ricky Martin.

October 30, 1906 – Composer and Disney Legend Paul Smith is Born

On October 30, 1906, composer Paul Smith was born in Calument, Michigan to a musical family. The family later moved to Caldwell, Idaho, where Smith’s father taught music at the College of Idaho. Smith’s musical ability emerged at an early age, and his father nurtured this by teaching his son to play a variety of instruments, including piano and violin. Smith enrolled in the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago in 1925; after graduation, he taught at Elmhurst College and York High School. He then moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA and earned a degree in English. After graduating, he wound up at the Walt Disney Studios in 1934, and became a pioneer in music for motion pictures, scoring for animated features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella, True-Life Adventure films such as The Vanishing Prairie and Perri, and live action features such as The Shaggy Dog and Pollyanna. Smith had over fifty credits to his name, and over the course of his career he scored eight Academy Award nominations, including one win for his work on the score of the film Pinocchio with Leigh Harline and Ned Washington. Smith retired in 1962 after almost thirty years with The Walt Disney Studios. On January 25, 1985, Smith passed away in Glendale, California. He was honored as a Disney Legend for his contributions to the Walt Disney Company in 1994.

October 18, 2008 – Radio Disney Hosts “Planet Premiere” of High School Musical 3: Senior Year Soundtrack

“This is the last chance to make our mark, history will know who we are.”

On October 18,2008, Radio Disney held what they called the “planet premiere” of the soundtrack for the upcoming feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year, with the soundtrack being released in physical copy three days later. Radio Disney not only played the soundtrack in its entirety, but also interviewed the cast members of the film.

October 15, 2002 – Hilary Duff’s Debut Album Santa Claus Lane is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Walk in this Christmas down Santa Claus Lane, no need to wonder, no need to explain.”

On October 15, 2002, the debut album of Disney Channel star Hilary Duff was released through Walt Disney Records. A Christmas album, the album features re-recordings of Christmas standards, such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Last Christmas,” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The titular song is the only original song on the album, written by producer Matthew Gerrard, Charlie Midnight, Bridget Benenate, and Jay Landers. The album debuted at number 154 on the Billboard 200, and peaked at the number 2 position on the Top Heatseekers and Top Kid Album charts.

September 21, 2004 – The Album This Is My Time by Raven-Symoné is Released Through Hollywood Records

“I want to see you back flip, cartwheel, don’t be cutting corners on me.”

On September 21, 2004, the third recording album by actress and singer-songwriter Raven-Symoné, entitled This Is My Time, was released through Hollywood Records in the United States. The album featured songs from a previously released EP, along with four songs Raven-Symoné contributed to film soundtracks for Disney films: “Grazing in the Grass” for The Lion King 1½, “This Is My Time” from The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, “Bump” from Ice Princess, and “Life is Beautiful” from Go Figure. The album peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200, making it her first album to chart. Three songs were released as singles to promote the album: “Grazing in the Grass,” “Backflip,” and “Bump.”

September 6, 2005 – Buena Vista Music Group and EMI Music Sign Exclusive License Agreement

On September 6, 2005, it was announced that EMI Music and the Walt Disney Company’s Buena Vista Music Group had signed an exclusive agreement that allowed EMI to represent and promote Disney’s music offerings – including Hollywood Records, Walt Disney Records, Lyric Street Records, and Mammoth Records – within the UK, Continental Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East. This catalogue was vast, featuring Disney’s 75-year music history through its films, as well as upcoming artists under the newer labels, such as Jesse McCartney and Rascal Flatts.

July 23, 2003 – The Cheetah Girls Single “Cinderella” Premieres on Radio Disney

“I don’t want to be like Cinderella, sittin’ in a dark cold dusty cellar.”

On July 23, 2003, the promotional single “Cinderella” premiered on Radio Disney. Originally recorded by i5, the song was recorded by The Cheetah Girls to promote the film of the same name. It was eventually released for digital download on August 12, 2003, with the music video premiering on Disney Channel the same day. The song was also featured in the film as the band’s audition song for the talent show.

May 3, 2005 – The Compilation Album Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs is Released

“Though her words are simple and few, listen, listen, she’s calling to you.”

On May 3, 2005, as part of the Disneyland 50th anniversary celebrations, the album Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs was released through Walt Disney Records. Andrews, who is well-known for her role as the titular character in the live action feature film Mary Poppins, was selected as the Official Ambassador for the 50th anniversary celebration; this album was created to celebrate this, and to reflect on Andrews’ favorite Disney memories. Rather than releasing new songs, this album was a compilation of Disney songs, ranging from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Beauty and the Beast.

April 21, 2004 – Apple and Disney Announce Deal for Buena Vista Music Group Catalog

“Now iTunes users can add these timeless Disney songs to their music libraries and enjoy them wherever they go on their iPods.”

On April 21, 2004, Apple announced that they had teamed up with Disney’s Buena Vista Music Group, with Apple getting exclusive rights to the Walt Disney Records catalog, ranging from the animated feature films to featured artists in the Hollywood Records label. The catalog was added to its own genre page within the iTunes music store, labeled as “Disney.” Disney chose to work with Apple, as Apple was the leading global online music store, and provided Buena Vista Music Group another avenue to make Disney’s music accessible to consumers.

March 5, 2013 – The Soundtrack for Oz the Great and Powerful is Released through Walt Disney Records

On March 5, 2013, the soundtrack for the live action feature film Oz the Great and Powerful was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack is comprised of the score to the film, composed by Danny Elfman. The soundtrack was released in both digital and physical formats, with the digital releases featured on iTunes and Amazon.
