June 12, 1975 – America on Parade Begins in Disneyland

“Floats throughout America on Parade represented historical, cultural and scientific achievements throughout the first 200 years of our nation.”

On June 12, 1975, the daytime parade America on Parade began its run in Disneyland. Celebrating the bicentennial of the United States of America, the parade featured special floats and character costumes that celebrated the history, culture, and heroes of the country, accompanied by a medley of popular songs. The parade was also led by Mickey, Goofy, and Donald, dressed in the “Spirit of ‘76” costumes. This parade was the first time that the parks on both coasts jointly worked on a production, which was viewed by over 25 million guests. The Disneyland version of the parade ran for 678 productions, ending on September 12, 1976.

June 8, 1962 – McDonnell Douglas Begins Rocket to the Moon Attraction Sponsorship

On June 8, 1962, the aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor McDonnell Douglas took over the sponsorship of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland attraction Rocket to the Moon. McDonnell Douglas succeeded TWA, who ended their sponsorship in 1961. The sponsorship was a big deal for the company, as it had just been formed in 1967, after a merger between McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft Company. This sponsorship ended in 1966, when the attraction would then become Flight to the Moon. McDonnell Douglas sponsored the succeeding attraction until January 5, 1975.

June 3, 1960 – The Puffin Bakery Closes in Disneyland

On June 3, 1960, the Puffin Bakery, located on Disneyland’s Main Street, closed. The bakery opened on July 18, 1955, and featured several types of pastries and snacks. When it closed, it was quickly replaced by the Sunkist Citrus House, which would close in 1989.

May 25, 1983 – The Village Haus Restaurant Opens in Disneyland

“Hi diddle-dee-dee, an actor’s life for me.”

On May 25, 1993, the Village Haus Restaurant opened in Disneyland’s Fantasyland area. Based on the animated feature Pinocchio, and first known as the Village Inn Restaurant, the menu featured quick-service dishes, including flatbread pizza, burgers, and grilled chicken. On February 24, 2017, the restaurant was changed to become the Red Rose Tavern, and changed to promote the upcoming live-action feature film Beauty and the Beast.

May 23, 2014 – The “Rock Your Disney Side Party” Kicks Off in Disney Parks

“We’re Rockin’ our Disney Side for 24 hours – from 6 a.m., May 23 to 6 a.m., May 24, 2014, local time!”

On May 23, 2014, the 24-hour Disney Park event “Rock Your Disney Side” kicked off in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure Park. Guests were encouraged to embrace their “Disney Sides,” particularly if they were showing their #Heroside or #Villainside. The event began at 6:00 am in the parks’ respective time zones, and featured special character meet and greets, including an appearance by villain Maleficent.

May 22, 1998 – The Astro Orbitor Opens in Disneyland

“As the newest star pilot to join the fleet, the time has come for you to take to the sky.”

On May 22, 1998, the Astro Orbitor attraction opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. It was based on Orbitoron from Disneyland Paris, rather than the Astro Orbiter attraction at Walt Disney World. The attraction has guests loaded into a three-person spaceship where they can soar above Tomorrowland, adjusting the height of their rocket as they spin around.

May 5, 2005 – The Fireworks Show Remember…Dreams Come True Begins Run

“Rekindle some of your fondest Disney memories during this stirring revival of a classic fireworks show…”

On May 5, 2005, as part of the Disneyland 50th anniversary celebration, a new fireworks show called Remember…Dreams Come True kicked off its run. It features a narration by Disneyland 50th Anniversary Ambassador Julie Andrews, along with several pieces of classic Disney songs, as well as several sounds and songs from Disneyland. The conclusion of the show also features a song called “Remember When,” performed by country artist LeAnn Rimes. The show originally finished its run in 2014, but was brought back as for select nights and currently still runs in the park.

April 29, 1990 – The Pendleton Woolen Mills Dry Goods Store Closes in Disneyland

On April 29, 1990, the Frontierland shop Pendleton Woolen Mills Dry Goods Store closed in Disneyland. It was one of the longest-running original shops and sponsor participant in the park, having opened on July 18, 1955. The shop was popular amongst guests, particularly for its selection of leather and woolen goods that fit the theme of the area. The store eventually became Bonanza Outfitters, which specializes in Western-themed clothing; the store also continues to carry Pendleton button down shirts.

April 14

April 14, 2016 – Groundbreaking Takes Place for Star Wars Land

“This is the theme park you’re looking for.”

On April 14, 2016, the groundbreaking for the new Star Wars-themed lands took place at the Disneyland Resort and in Walt Disney World. This expansion of the park is the largest single-themed land expansion for the American Disney parks, spanning 14-acres. To celebrate this event, a 360-degree photo was released online to give guests an immersive experience in the building of the park, complete with appearances by R2-D2 and BB-8.

April 8

April 8, 1999 – Hook’s Pointe & Wine Cellar Opens in Disneyland

On April 8, 1999, the restaurant Hook’s Pointe & Wine Cellar opened in the Disneyland Hotel. Replacing the Shipyard Inn, this award-winning restaurant was well-known for seafood dishes, alongside an impressive wine cellar. It closed on July 25, 2010, due to a major makeover of the Disneyland Hotel, and was replaced by Tangaroa Terrace.
