April 24, 2009 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar Announces Retirement

On April 24, 2009, Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar announced his retirement after over fifty years working with the Walt Disney Company. Sklar, who announced he would be officially retiring on July 17, had a long illustrious career with Disney, starting with creating a tabloid newspaper to be sold on Main Street during Disneyland’s first year, to joining the Imagineering department in 1961, to being the vice president of concepts and planning for Imagineering in 1974. Sklar was also instrumental in the creation of Epcot in Walt Disney World, as well as the creation of the other Disney parks around the world. The same day he retired, Sklar was honored with a window on Main Street.

April 23, 2015 – Dockside Margaritas Opens in Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs

On April 23, 2015, the quick-service station Dockside Margaritas opened in the revamped Disney Springs area. The space, styled after a 1960s Florida fruit-stand, has specialty margaritas made-to-order, either on the rocks or frozen, along with other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The stand is also proud of serving craft beers from Florida breweries. Guests can enjoy the sights of Buena Vista Cove and listen to live entertainment while enjoying their drinks.

April 17, 2012 – The Orange Bird Returns to Walt Disney World

“Little Orange Bird in the sunshine tree, won’t you think of something sunny just for me?”

On April 17, 2012, the official Disney fan club D23 announced in front of a small group of members that the Orange Bird would be returning to the Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World. Designed in the 1970s as a mascot for the park, the bird was located in Adventureland’s Sunshine Tree Terrace, where citrus drinks were made available. In 1971, a song was written and released by the Sherman Brothers, called “The Orange Bird Song.” In addition to adding new merchandise featuring the quirky character, a statue created in the 1970s was brought back, standing proudly above the Sunshine Tree Terrace.

April 15, 1973 – The Attraction The Walt Disney Story Opens on Walt Disney World’s Main Street

On April 15, 1973, the attraction The Walt Disney Story opened on Main Street in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The attraction was a movie about Walt Disney, narrated by Walt himself through archival footage, and was one of the only free attractions at the park, as coupons were still being used at the time. The queue for the attraction also gave guests a look at some rare Disney memorabilia and collectables. While similar to the original Disneyland attraction, the Walt Disney World version gave guests a look at what was to come, including a look at Epcot, as well as a look at the Disney-MGM Studios. The attraction closed on October 5, 1992.

April 14, 2009 – The Picture Up: My Name is Dug is Released Through Disney Press

On April 14, 2009, the picture book Up: My Name is Dug was released through Disney Press. The book, written by Kiki Thorpe and illustrated by Pixar employee (specifically, the story supervisor for the film Up and the director for Dug’s Secret Mission short film) Ronnie del Carmen, the picture book is based on the film Up, and has the character of Dug interact with the audience. An app version of the storybook was released in late 2012.

April 13, 2012 – The Premiere of the Disneynature Film Chimpanzee is Held in Downtown Disney

“Disneynature joined forces with the Jane Goodall Institute for a special ‘See Chimpanzee, Save Chimpanzees’ program.”

On April 13, 2012, a red carpet world premiere event was held for Disneynature’s newest film Chimpanzee. The world premiere was held at Downtown Disney in Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort, and included guests of all types, including producer Don Hahn, Jane Goodal, and special Disney Channel stars. The event was planned with the Jane Goodall Institute, with Disneynature making a donation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to the JGI program with every ticket sold for the film in its first week.

April 8, 2008 – Disney Legend Julie Andrews is Honored with Carousel Horse at Disneyland

On April 8, 2008, actress, Disney Legend, and 50th anniversary ambassador of Disneyland Julie Andrews was honored with a special carousel horse on King Arthur’s Carousel. The lead horse, named Jingles, was repainted with a more ornate design, honoring Andrews’ more than 40 years of dedication to the Walt Disney Company, including a saddle featuring her initials, images depicting her famous role as British nanny Mary Poppins, along with the number 50 to represent the park’s 50th anniversary, for which she was the ambassador and made an honorary cast member. On hand to present the horse was Imagineer and fellow Disney Legend Marty Sklar.

April 2, 2007 – The Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

“Discover the power of laughter from the original Monsters of Comedy during a hilarious interactive show.”

On April 2, 2007, the interactive attraction Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor opened in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland area. The attraction, featuring characters from the Pixar films Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, takes guests into a comedy club in the heart of Monstropolis, where character Mike has duties as the M.C. Guests are implored to laugh at the jokes in order to build up enough power to open the doors at the end of the show. Using special technology, the comedians interact with the audience, including choosing one audience member to be “that guy,” the butt of every joke. While waiting for the show to begin, guests are also asked to provide their own jokes through text messages that may be used during one of the show’s acts.

March 31, 2001 – The Animal Kingdom Lodge Opens for Annual Passholders

“Step into the heart of Africa at this magnificent Resort hotel.”

On March 31, 2001, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge opened for a special open house exclusively for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders, weeks before its official opening on April 16. The hotel, as do many other attractions and resorts, has an intriguing backstory: the lodge is based on a traditional African kraal, and was built on the top of an extinct volcano. Keeping with the theme of the park, the resort has many animals inhabiting the nearby savannah plains, including wildebeest and giraffes. The hotel has almost 1,300 rooms in six stories, and three restaurants: Jiko, Boma, and Mara.

March 27, 2009 – The Celebrate! A Street Party Parade Begins in Disneyland

On March 27, 2009, the Celebrate! A Street Party daytime parade began its run in Disneyland. The parade, added for the “What Will You Celebrate” festivities of 2009, started from the it’s a small world attraction and wandered down toward Main Street. There were three special “celebration zones” for guests to be in where the parade would stop and entertain guests with a special dance to the songs chosen for the show. Songs included “I Love Rock and Roll,” “I Wanna Be Like You,” and “Friend Like Me,” as well as an original son g for the show, “Celebrate You,” played at the end of the show. Several Disney characters were on hand for the parade, including a special appearance of Chip and Dale’s paramour, Clarice.
