February 20, 2013 – The IBM THINK Interactive Attraction Opens in Epcot

On February 20, 2013, in conjunction with National Engineers Week, the new attraction IBM THINK was unveiled in Epcot’s Innoventions West area. The interactive attraction aims to teach guests about the way the world can work alongside technological innovations. To also celebrate National Engineers week, IBM was on hand to provide nearby high school teachers and students with free STEM lesson plans on iPads and Android tablets.

February 19, 2010 – Official Reopening Date for Captain EO in Disneyland Announced

“Today, we are excited to give you an update on the Captain’s return!”

On February 19, 2010, the official reopening date for the Captain EO attraction was announced by Disney Parks, with the official date being February 23, 2010. The film was originally announced in late 2009 to be returning to Disneyland, but with no firm date set; more information about the release was announced in the February update. The film would return to the Tomorrowland Theatre with an updated 70mm print, along with acoustic updates that were made to the theatre since the film’s last showing in 1997.

February 18, 2002 – Ceremony is Held for Walt Disney World’s Revised Hall of Presidents

On February 18, 2002, to celebrate President’s Day and the revised version of the Hall of Presidents attraction, a special ceremony was held in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Planned as part of the 100 Years of Magic celebrations, the ceremony included fifty students from the nearby Lost Lake Elementary School leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Walt Disney World Philharmonic orchestra and the Voices of Liberty performing patriotic pieces, and a look at the newly revised Hall of Presidents attraction, featuring the new Audio-Animatronic figure of 43rd President of the United States George W. Bush.

February 16, 2000 – The Disneyland 45 Years of Magic Parade Premieres

On February 16, 2000, the 45 Years of Magic Parade kicked off in Disneyland. Celebrating the park’s 45th anniversary, the parade featured characters from classic Disney films, such as Disney princesses Cinderella and Aurora, as well as several sections featuring elements from the movies Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. The parade also featured heavy cloud imagery, and a new feature of “audience participation,” where up to 45 spectators were invited to wear tutus and hats and dance during the parade. Originally the music to accompany the parade was Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” but after a rather lukewarm reception from guests, the music was changed to a more upbeat Disney medley.

February 14, 2013 – “A Celebration of True Love” Event is Held at Walt Disney World

“On February 14, you’ll have a special chance to re-commit your promise of love with your significant other during ‘A Celebration of True Love’ at Magic Kingdom Park.”

On February 14, 2013, as part of the Limited Time Magic promotions at the Disney Parks, a special event called “A Celebration of True Love” was held at Walt Disney World. Fifty couples gathered at the steps of Cinderella Castle to renew their vows and celebrate the magic of love and Disney. There was a special appearance by Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, along with their princes, as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, to help the couples celebrate with fireworks and heart-shaped confetti.

February 7, 2008 – Disney Announces American Idol Attraction

On February 7, 2008, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced the creation of a new American Idol­-themed attraction, creating a partnership with 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia Licensing. The attraction was announced to give guests the opportunity to feel the experience of auditioning for the hit reality program and be voted on by a panel of judges, with the highest-voted performers competing against each other at the end of the day in a Grand Finale show. Winners of the Grand Finale would go on to win a prize of a guaranteed reservation for a regional stadium audition for the reality show. The attraction, named The American Idol Experience, opened on February 14, 2009, in Hollywood Studios.

February 5, 2015- Tom Staggs is Named Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company

On February 5, 2015, the Walt Disney and Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs was announced to be the new Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company. Staggs was chosen thanks to his track record in running the parks, his background in investment banking, and his ability to handle complex deals for the company, including the investment in the MagicBand system used in Walt Disney World. Staggs joined Disney in 1990 as the manager of strategic planning after working at Dain Bosworth and Morgan Stanley. He soon moved up the corporate ladder, being named a senior VP in 1995, and was shortly after named an executive VP and Chief Financial Officer. Although concerns arose around Staggs’ ability to handle the strategic management of a company as vast as Disney, his success with the Disneyland Shanghai project seemed to quell any doubts. However, Staggs stepped down from his position and left the company in 2016, after he was unable to secure a commitment that he would succeed Bob Iger after Iger’s retirement in 2018.

January 30, 1971 – Disneyland Hosts Two-Day Alice in Wonderland Days Event

On January 30, 1971, Disneyland hosted the two-day event Alice in Wonderland Days. The event was a celebration of all things Alice in Wonderland, complete with two parades that traveled from Main Street U.S.A. to the it’s a small world attraction in Fantasyland. Special photo ops were also available with characters Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Walrus, held in the Alpine Gardens area between Tomorrowland and Sleeping Beauty Castle.

January 21, 1955 – The Dairy Bar Opens in Disneyland

“Nature’s most nearly perfect food.”

On January 21, 1955, the Dairy Bar opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. Sponsored by the American Dairy Association, it was a mix of a presentation about the future of milk and milk delivery and a quick service restaurant serving milk in a small dining room. The area did not prove to be as popular as other future-looking presentations within Tomorrowland, and was closed on September 1, 1958.

January 18, 1958 – The Pet Boarding Facility Ken-L-Land Opens

“‘Man’s best friend’ has not been forgotten when the family visits Disneyland, thanks to Ken-L-Ration’s deluxe Pet Motel, Ken-L-Land.”

On January 18, 1958, the pet boarding facility Ken-L-Land opened just outside the Disneyland main gate. It was a place where families, who had traveled miles to get to Disneyland, could leave their pets rather than leave them in the parking lot. Sponsored by Ken-L-Ration dog food from the Quaker Oats Company, pets were fed exclusively from the brand, with a full day’s boarding and a can of food costing 25 cents. Ken-L-Ration’s sponsorship lasted until 1967; the sponsorship and name of the kennel changed over the years, including sponsorship by Kal Kan with the name change to Kennel Club in 1968 to 1977, sponsorship by Gaines with name change to Pet Care Kennel in 1986 to 1991, and sponsorship by Nestle’s Purina in 1993, with the name change to Disneyland Kennel Club.
