June 18, 1983 – The Flights of Fantasy Parade begins in Disneyland

On June 18, 1983, the Flights of Fantasy Parade debuted in Disneyland. The parade was a daytime and nighttime parade, and replaced the Main Street Electrical Parade during its run. The parade was created to help usher in the changes with the newly expanded Fantasyland area within the park, and featured several floats with inflatable characters from such Disney classics as Winnie the Pooh, Sleeping Beauty, and Fantasia. The parade finished its run in the park on September 10, 1983.

June 16, 1984 – The Film Attraction Magic Journeys Premieres in Disneyland

“Just an ordinary day, all at once you’re on your way to a place that cannot be no one knows what turns the key.”

On June 16, 1984, the 3-D film attraction Magic Journeys opened in Disneyland, first premiering at the Space Stage outdoor area; the area was then replaced with the indoor Magic Eye Theater. The film, considered an impressionistic view of the world through a child’s imagination, first premiered in Walt Disney World on October 1, 1982, with Disneyland being the second park in which the film played. The film stopped showing in Disneyland in 1986, and was replaced by Captain EO.

June 6, 1959 – The Submarine Voyage Attraction Opens in Disneyland

“Secure ship for sea, make all preparations for getting underway.”

On June 6, 1959, the Submarine Voyage opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. The attraction was part of a major expansion of the park, which also included the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Monorail. Originally painted grey, the submarines seated 38 guests and took them through a tour of underwater curiosities, including mermaids and the city of Atlantis. The attraction was overhauled in 1980, with the submarines being painted yellow to reflect a focus on scientific research. The attraction closed in 1998, but was revamped and reopened as the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in 2007.

May 26, 1990 – Mickey’s Starland Area Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park

On May 26, 1990, the Mickey’s Starland area opened in the Magic Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. The area replaced the Mickey’s Birthdayland area, which closed on April 22, 1990, at the conclusion of Mickey’s 60th birthday. Many special features from Mickey’s Birthdayland remained, and the new area included a live show called Mickey’s Magical TV World show, with several of the Disney Afternoon characters, including Darkwing Duck and Baloo from TaleSpin. In 1996, the area was revamped and turned into Mickey’s Toontown Fair.

April 15, 1973 – The Attraction The Walt Disney Story Opens on Walt Disney World’s Main Street

On April 15, 1973, the attraction The Walt Disney Story opened on Main Street in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The attraction was a movie about Walt Disney, narrated by Walt himself through archival footage, and was one of the only free attractions at the park, as coupons were still being used at the time. The queue for the attraction also gave guests a look at some rare Disney memorabilia and collectables. While similar to the original Disneyland attraction, the Walt Disney World version gave guests a look at what was to come, including a look at Epcot, as well as a look at the Disney-MGM Studios. The attraction closed on October 5, 1992.

February 28, 2003 – The Attraction Test the Limits Lab Opens in Innoventions

On February 28, 2003, the new interactive attraction hosted by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. called Test the Limits Lab opened in Ecpot’s Innoventions area. The area hosted five exhibits for kids to test, acting in the role of an engineer to test products in an effort to teach guests about product safety. The exhibits included tests on firefighters’ helmets and television screens. The attraction closed on January 6, 2015.

February 18, 2000 – The Nighttime Fireworks Show Believe…There’s Magic in the Stars Begins in Disneyland

On February 18, 2000, the nighttime fireworks show Believe…There’s Magic in the Stars began in Disneyland Park. The show, replacing Fantasy in the Sky that had run since 1956, was created to help celebrate the park’s 45th anniversary, and was the most complex show to date. For the holiday season, the show was retooled to Believe…In Holiday Magic. The show used clips and music from several Disney animated features, as well as an interwoven song created just for the show. The song was later released on the park’s official album. The show closed on November 1, 2004, and was replaced by Imagine…A Fantasy in the Sky.

February 17, 2012 – The Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline Show Begins

“Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline opens for business today at Disney California Adventure park.”

On February 17, 2012, the new show Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline began in Disney’s California Adventure park in Condor Flats. The show uses song from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s to create a retro-style show that can be enjoyed by old and young guests alike, featuring standards such as “Come Fly With Me,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” and “Lady of Spain.” There is also a second medley of songs featuring Disney songs that featuring flying, including “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. The show also features a special talking and singing Minnie Mouse, appearing for the first time in Disneyland’s history. The show ended its run on October 20, 2013.

February 5, 2007 – Disney Announces Creation of ImageMovers Digital

On February 5, 2007, Disney announced the setup of a joint venture with director Robert Zemeckis, known as ImageMovers Digital. The goal of the studio was to develop 3D animated features using performance capture technology, which was used in Zemeckis’ film The Polar Express. Disney had been interested in expanding into 3D technology, as the 3D version of Chicken Little had been profitable for the studio. The first film released by the venture was A Christmas Carol in 2009, which was a box office success. However, the studio closed after the box office bomb of their second film, Mars Needs Moms.

January 28, 2009 – The Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure Opens in Epcot

On January 28, 2009, the interactive attraction Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure opened in Epcot’s World Showcase. Based on the hit Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible, the experience gave guests a chance to become secret agents throughout Epcot, solving cases through the help of a special communication device known as a Kimmunicator. Seven pavilions, each with a different mission, were available for exploring, with each quest taking about an hour to complete. The interactive attraction closed on May 17, 2012, and was replaced by Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure on July 6, 2012.
