January 11, 2016 – President and CEO of Nike Mark G. Parker Joins Walt Disney Company Board of Directors

On January 11, 2016, it was announced that President and CEO of Nike, Inc., Mark G, Parker, was elected to the Walt Disney Company Board of Directors. Parker began at Nike in 1979 as one of the company’s first footwear designers, and moved up the ranks to become the CEO and President in 2006. Parker is also renowned for expanding the growth of the company’s global business portfolio, along with leading the way in product design. His addition to the board brings the membership of the Disney Board of Directors to 12.

December 31, 2009 – Marvel Stockholders Approve Disney Acquisition Deal

On December 31, 2009, a special meeting was held for the stockholders of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., where the planned merger with The Walt Disney Company was front and center for approval. With the approval of the shareholders, Marvel became a Disney-owned subsidiary, with Marvel shareholders receiving $30 a share along with a 0.7452 Disney share for each Marvel stock owned. The merger was completed the same day following the approval.

December 28, 2005 – NASCAR Driver Kyle Petty Announces Participation in Walt Disney World Marathon

On December 28, 2005, 26-year NASCAR driver Kyle Petty announced that he would be running in the Walt Disney World Marathon. With this announcement, Petty joined many celebrities that run the Walt Disney World Marathon for charity, as he ran for the Victory Junction Gang Camp charity. Petty’s association with Disney ties in with the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway, named after his father, driver Richard Petty.

December 5, 1986 – America Officially Celebrates Walt Disney Recognition Day

“I call upon all Americans to recognize this very special day in the spirit in which Walt Disney entertained young and older Americans.”

On December 5, 1986, the United States of America officially celebrated Walt Disney Recognition Day. The celebration, passed by the Senate on August 23, 1986, and celebrated on the birthday of Walt Disney, was honored via a proclamation by then-President Ronald Reagan on what would have been Disney’s 85th birthday. In a special statement, Reagan recognized Disney’s contributions to the field of entertainment, his virtues and imagination, and the sense of wonder he gave to people the world over.

December 3, 2010 – Disney Announces Ben Sherwood as New President of ABC News

On December 3, 2010, the Disney/ABC Television Group released an announcement that journalist and author Ben Sherwood would take over as the president of ABC News. Sherwood, a former executive producer of Good Morning America and best-selling author of The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, began working with ABC News in 1989 as an investigative associate producer and producer for PrimeTime Live, leaving in 1997 to join NBC’s Nightly News with Tom Brokaw as a broadcast producer. He returned to ABC in 2004 to serve as the executive producer of Good Morning America, leading the programs to two of its most successful seasons in the show’s history.

December 2, 2013 – WestJet and Disney’s Magic Plane is Unveiled

“Keep an eye to the sky for Sorcerer Mickey…”

On December 2, 2013, airline WestJet unveiled their newest aircraft known as the Magic Plane, featuring Sorcerer Mickey on the tail. The plane is a custom-painted Boeing Next-Generation 737-800, and was painted and unveiled in Calgary, Canada. The entire plane, inside and out, is designed to tell a story and bring guests Disney magic. The plane started flying the next day on December 3, with the inaugural flight from Calgary to Orlando, Florida.

November 29, 2005 – Kim Possible Renewed for Fourth Season

On November 29, 2005, Disney announced that the popular animated Disney Channel Original Series Kim Possible would be renewed for a fourth season. At the time, Disney Channel tended to cancel series after 65 episodes, but a strong fandom base and its critical acclaim caused Disney to reconsider its decision; several shows since then have not adhered to the 65 episode rule. The fourth series premiered on February 10, 2007, and ran for 22 episodes.

October 17, 2007 – Disney Announces Overhaul of Disney’s California Adventure Park

On October 17, 2007, The Walt Disney Company announced plans to overhaul its California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California. The park, barely six years old at the time of the announcement, was considered a disappointment from financial and anticipation standpoints, with crowd numbers well below expected. Attempts had already been added to make the park more of a draw, including the addition of the popular Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, but the park still faced a host of criticisms. The overhaul, which would include elements of classic Hollywood, as well as a section dedicated to popular Pixar characters, was estimated to cost 1.1 billion, almost the same amount as it cost to build the park in the first place.

May 8, 2006 – The Leads for the Broadway Version of the Mary Poppins Musical Are Announced

“We are delighted that Ashley and Gavin will bring these two legendary characters to life at the New Amsterdam Theater.”

On May 8, 2006, the American production of Mary Poppins officially announced its leads: Ashley Brown as Mary, and Gavin Lee as Bert. Brown had previous experience with Disney Theatrical, starring in the touring show On the Record, and making her Broadway debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Lee had originated the role of Bert in the West End Production, and was brought to Broadway thanks to his charming interpretation of the character. It was also announced that the official Broadway production would open November 16.

April 24, 2009 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar Announces Retirement

On April 24, 2009, Imagineer and Disney Legend Marty Sklar announced his retirement after over fifty years working with the Walt Disney Company. Sklar, who announced he would be officially retiring on July 17, had a long illustrious career with Disney, starting with creating a tabloid newspaper to be sold on Main Street during Disneyland’s first year, to joining the Imagineering department in 1961, to being the vice president of concepts and planning for Imagineering in 1974. Sklar was also instrumental in the creation of Epcot in Walt Disney World, as well as the creation of the other Disney parks around the world. The same day he retired, Sklar was honored with a window on Main Street.
