September 3, 2009 – The Disney Wonder Rescues a Man Overboard

“guess that disney magic is real.”

On September 3, 2009, the Disney Wonder rescued a man from the Atlantic Ocean near Florida at around 12:45 am. The 34-year-old man had jumped overboard from a Carnival Cruise Line ship after allegedly arguing with a woman, and the nearby Disney Wonder diverted its course to rescue him. A Disney rescue boat was then sent to retrieve the man, who had been treading water for about an hour, and brought him back to the Disney Wonder. The cruise ship brought him back to Port Canaveral, where he was taken to a hospital for a physical and mental evaluation.

August 31, 2009 – The Tequila Bar La Cava del Tequila Opens in Epcot

“Explore the heritage and tradition of tequila-making with tasty tequilas and mouthwatering margaritas at La Cava del Tequila in the Mexico pavilion at Epcot.”

On August 31, 2009, the tequila bar La Cava del Tequila opened in the Mexico Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase. The bar hosts over 200 types of tequila, along with several types of Mexican beer and wine. Guests can also indulge in some light snacks while sampling a particular tequila of interest, or trying a tequila flight.

August 28, 2003 – The Live Show The Golden Mickeys Premieres on the Disney Cruise Line

“The Golden Mickeys are tonight!”

On August 28, 2003, the live show The Golden Mickeys began performances on the Disney Cruise Line ship Disney Wonder. The show’s premise is that of an awards show, where the titular award is handed out to various Disney characters in specialized categories, including Heroism and Romance. Characters come from such films as Tarzan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Tangled. The show is hosted by a reluctant crew member, who has to take over the duties when the real master of ceremonies surprisingly doesn’t show. The show has been performed on the Disney Magic (from 2003 until 2010) and the Disney Dream (beginning in 2011); a version of the show was also performed in Hong Kong Disneyland starting in 2005.

August 27, 2002 – The Tribute Album Monsters, Inc. Scream Factory Favorites is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“I only have eye for you, I love your skin so blue.”

On August 27, 2002, the tribute album to the Pixar animated feature film Monsters, Inc., entitled Monsters, Inc. Scream Factory Favorites was released through Walt Disney Records. The songs on the album were recorded by American Western and comedy band Riders in the Sky, who started their relationship with Pixar after performing the song “Woody’s Round-Up” in the film Toy Story 2. The Scream Factory Favorites album featured songs based on the film, and the instrumental piece “Big High Wire Hop,” which was featured in the short film that premiered before Monsters, Inc., For the Birds. The album would go on to win a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

August 26, 2009 – The Film OceanWorld 3D is Released in France

“Have you ever dreamed of discovering an incredible, surprising, and occasionally dangerous world?”

On August 26, 2009, the nature film OceanWorld 3D was released in France. This film was a joint production between Disneynature, 3D Entertainment, and German film distributor Wild Bunch, with Disney handling the distribution of the film throughout the United States and Mexico. OceanWorld 3D was an ambitious project, as it took seven years and over 200 hours of footage across various parts of the ocean, including California’s kelp forests, the Great Barrier Reef, and Argentina’s Peninsula Valdez. This is also the first nature documentary to be filmed and released in 3D. It was written by Jean-Jacques Mantello and Francois Mantello, and directed by Jean-Jeacques Mantello.

August 25, 2007 – The Live Show Playhouse Disney Live! On Tour Premieres

On August 25, 2007, the live show Playhouse Disney Live! On Tour premiered in Lakeland, Florida. This show featured characters from popular Playhouse Disney shows, including Handy Manny, Little Einsteins, My Friends Tigger & Pooh, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The main plot of the show is that Mickey is planning a party for all of his friends, with characters such as Handy Manny and Winnie the Pooh helping in the planning. Once it finished its run, the show was followed by Three Classic Fairy Tales.

August 23, 2001 – The Power of Blast! Show Closes in Epcot

On August 23, 2001, the special show The Power of Blast! played its final performance at the America Gardens Theatre in Epcot. Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway show Blast!, the abbreviated version of the show originally premiered on June 16, 2001. The show was a brass and percussion routine, playing a variety of genres and using surprise visual implements, such as flags and sabers. Guests could also purchase dinner packages where they could book dinner at a restaurant and have preferred seating for the show. The show was eventually moved to Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater and ran from November 22, 2001, September 2, 2002.

August 18, 2008 – The Jonas Brothers Unveil Their Wax Figures as Madame Tussauds

On August 18, 2008, the popular Disney Channel stars and pop boy band the Jonas Brothers unveiled their wax figure likenesses at Madam Tussauds in Washington DC. Fans of the band showed up to see the unveiling and to meet the boys – and their statues – in person. The statues, a testament to the band’s popularity, also acted as promotion for the band’s upcoming album A Little Bit Longer.

August 15, 2009 – The Restaurant Kouzzina by Cat Cora Opens in Walt Disney World

“The cuisine at Kouzzina…showcases Mediterranean cuisine and Chef Cora’s philosophy to create simple yet sensational meals.”

On August 15, 2008, the restaurant Kouzinna by Cat Cora opened in Walt Disney World’s Boardwalk area. Replacing the restaurant Spoodles, the restaurant was created by Iron Chef Cat Cora, and features a Mediterranean-style cuisine inspired by Cora’s own Greek heritage. The restaurant’s name, Kouzzina, means “kitchen” in Greek. The restaurant closed on September 30, 2014, and was replated by Trattoria al Forno.

August 14, 2007 – The Nintendo DS Game High School Musical: Makin’ the Cut is Released

“The worldwide runaway Disney Channel movie hit – “High School Musical” – now comes to the small-screen on the Nintendo DS in an all new game…that takes players across America as they compete in the ultimate musical competition.”

On August 14, 2007, the Nintendo DS game High School Musical: Makin’ the Cut was released. Promoting the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise High School Musical, the game features the cast in a rhythm game setup in the guise of a national music competition. When released, the game had online features that allowed players to compete with friends and show off personal video clips of their dances; this feature has been disabled since May 20, 2014.
