Legends02

“Any mechanical things you had to do, what you said was, ‘Call Roger, he’ll know how to fix it.’ Without [Roger Broggie], Disneyland wouldn’t have happened.” – Michael Eisner, then CEO of the Walt Disney Company

On October 18, 1990, the new 1990 class of Disney Legends were inducted at the special ceremony at the Disney Legends Promenade. Among those inducted were Roger Broggie (Imagineering), Joe Fowler (Attractions), John Hench (Animation and Imagineering), Richard Irvine (Imagineering), Herb Ryman (Imagineering), and Richard and Robert Sherman (Music). Irvine and Ryman were the only ones awarded posthumously; since the ceremony, Broggie, Fowler, Hench, and Robert Sherman have passed away. Broggie was known as Disney’s original Imagineer, beginning work in 1939 at the company as a precision machinist. Fowler, a retired ship builder, was invited personally by Walt Disney to lead construction of Disneyland. Hench began at Disney as a sketch artist in 1939, and moved to the Imagineering department in 1954; he was also awarded an Academy Award for his special effects work on the live-action film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and was Mickey Mouse’s official portrait artist. Irvine helped create what is now known as Walt Disney Imagineering, creating leading a team of Imagineers to create Disneyland. Ryman created the preliminary sketches of the park, and was able to turn Walt Disney’s ideas into drawings from which the Imagineers could work. The Sherman Brothers were well known for creating some of the most memorable songs for Disney films, and are best known for their work on the classic film Mary Poppins.

October 17, 1998 – The Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown Premieres

vlcsnap-2013-10-17-16h39m23s116

“Halloween is cool, nature boy. I mean, it’s exciting, strange, and ancient.”

On October 17, 1998, the Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown premiered. The film was very popular, and became a franchise for the Disney Channel, with three other sequels released: Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown. Although later stylized as “Kalabar,” there are several instances where the character’s name is spelled “Calabar.” The film was written Paul Bernbaum, Jon Cooksey, and Ali Matheson, and directed by Duwayne Dunham. It stars Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie, Debbie Reynolds as Aggie, Judith Hoag as Gwen, Joey Zimmerman as Dylan, Emily Roeske as Sophie, and Robin Thomas as Kalabar.

The film begins on Halloween night, and Marnie Piper is arguing with her mother, Gwen, about how Gwen forbids her children to go out trick-or-treating or attend any parties. Marnie’s siblings Dylan and Sophie also wish to go outside, but while Gwen apologizes, she refuses to explain why she won’t let her children go outside. Outside, a strange bus flies through the air, and drops off an old woman at the corner, who is followed by a carpet bag. She appears at the Pipers and is revealed to be Gwen’s mother, Aggie, and surprises her grandchildren with a bagful of candy, along with some other presents. She remarks to Gwen that this is Marnie’s thirteenth Halloween, but Gwen refuses to acknowledge her mother. After the kids get ready for bed, Aggie tries to convince Gwen to move home, but Gwen refuses to live with her. Aggie then tells the kids a story about a magical place called “Halloweentown,” and shows the kids a picture book of the place. Marnie then sees an image of a witch that looks like herself in the book, and wishes she were a witch. Just as Aggie is about to say something important, Gwen interrupts her, and Aggie sadly realizes that she has to leave.

In the kitchen, Gwen and Aggie argue about Marnie, with Aggie angry that Marnie hasn’t had any of her witch training, and will soon lose any powers she had. Marnie sneaks downstairs and discovers that her grandmother is a witch. Aggie then reveals that she came to ask Gwen for help, as something bad is happening at home, suspecting that someone is returning them to the Dark Times. Gwen refuses to help, stating that it’s nothing to do with her. Marnie rushes upstairs and tells Dylan what she’s found out, and they see Aggie walking out with her bag following her. Marnie then decides to go after her, with Dylan following her as well. The two see a bus appear, and quickly board through the back without anyone noticing. Once they arrive in Halloweentown, the two quickly follow their grandmother, but are distracted by all the strange and wonderful surroundings and people. The two are soon surprised to see Sophie, who followed them onto the bus without them knowing.

The three run across the Mayor of Halloweentown, Kalabar, who happens to be a warlock, and somehow knows their mom. He helps them get to Aggie’s by the use of a skeleton cab driver named Benny. Marnie then tries to unlock the door with any powers she has, but fails. Sophie is able to unlock the door by wishing the lock was a frog. Inside, Aggie senses that her grandchildren are coming, and is not surprised to see them. She allows them to stay until midnight in their world, which could be anywhere between two days or two weeks, and then agrees to help train Marnie. She shows the kids Merlin’s Talisman, which should help get rid of the bad thing threatening Halloweentown. She has the kids help her gather the ingredients for witches brew, but they have to do it carefully. Meanwhile, back in the mortal world, Gwen is still unaware that her children are gone, and when she goes to check on them, she realizes there’s only one place they could have gone when she finds them missing.

As they travel through Halloweentown, Aggie explains how the town came to be

As they travel through Halloweentown, Aggie explains how the town came to be

Aggie takes them through the town, explaining how Halloweentown came to be. They run across Kalabar again, and Aggie tries to explain the situation to him. Kalabar apologizes to Aggie about not believing her before, but asks her to leave the situation be until he can get a good handle on it. Marnie then discovers the broomsticks, and Aggie agrees to buy her one. Unfortunately, the bonding moment is ruined by a local punk named Luke, who wants to take Marnie out on a date, but Marnie turns him down flat. He threatens them before leaving, and Marnie returns to her task at hand: buying a broomstick. Aggie takes Marnie for a ride on the broomstick, and when they land, they find Gwen waiting for them. Gwen demands that they go home, but Marnie refuses to go, and wants to get her training from her grandmother. Gwen refuses to let Marnie get her training, stating she was born in the human world, and human is what she will be. Marnie finally goes with her mother, but is angered that she will lose her powers forever. Aggie is upset to be torn away from her family.

As they wait for the bus, Marnie proclaims that she will never speak to her mother again. Fortunately for Marnie, the bus won’t be available for several hours. Dylan offers to go see the mayor to take them home, and Gwen agrees. When they arrive, Kalabar flirts with Gwen, as he has had feelings for her for a long time. Meanwhile, Aggie wanders dejectedly through town, when she is accosted by Luke. His powerful friend knows that she has Merlin’s Talisman, and Luke offers to take Aggie to meet this creature that is causing the problems in Halloweentown. Marnie continues to argue with her mother about her being a witch, when Sophie sees Aggie walking with Luke. Marnie rushes out to help her grandmother, and the rest of the family follows to stop her. Aggie is taken to the closed-down movie theater, where she meets the Shadow Creature, who has taken residents of Halloweentown and freezes them in time until he needs them to help bring back the Dark Ages. She refuses to hand over the Talisman, and he decides to freeze her as well. Luke is alarmed, as the Shadow Creature had promised that Aggie would be safe. When Marnie and her family arrive, Luke is ordered to attack them, but he flees instead. Gwen is hit by the creature’s spell when she tries to protect Aggie, and Aggie is finally frozen. Aggie, with her last bit of strength, asks Marnie to go and save Halloweentown.

The kids, now on their own, try to come up with a plan to save their mom and grandmother

On their own, the kids try to come up with a plan to save their mother and grandmother, beginning with the collection of ingredients to create witches brew. They first head to hairdressers to collect some hair of a werewolf, then to a gym to get some sweat from a ghost, and finally a dentist to get the fang from a vampire. As they leave, they come across Benny again, who offers to give them a ride. Sophie senses that he’s possessed by the “bad thing,” and they are able to escape his clutches by sending a dog after him. They make the witches brew and place it in the talisman, but Marnie forgets the spell needed to make it light up. Sophie is able to remember the words, as she thought it was pretty enough to make into a song. With Sophie’s help, the two recite the spell, but nothing happens. However, Marnie remembers her grandmother’s words on magic, which is to want something and then let yourself have it. The two try again, and the Talisman lights up. The kids then head out to the movie theater, with Marnie taking her grandmother’s cloak with her. Marnie soon deduces that they need to put the Talisman in the giant pumpkin in the town square.

As Marnie heads to the pumpkin, she is stopped by Luke, who warns her it’s a trap. She doesn’t listen to him, but he pleads that he didn’t know that the Shadow Creature was going to attack her grandmother, that the creature just wanted the talisman, and he’d let Aggie go. Suddenly, a dark cloud appears over city hall, and Luke hides Marnie behind a hay bale. The Shadow Creature appears on the roof of city hall, and reveals his plan of taking over the mortal world, bringing the monsters back to where they used to live. The creature then reveals himself to be Kalabar, and he promises to reclaim the mortal world for the creatures of Halloweentown, so long as they stop Marnie Cromwell from stopping him. He attacks Marnie as she runs through the crowd, and when he pulls away the cloak, he finds he has been tricked, as Luke was acting as a diversion while Marnie went to place the Talisman in the pumpkin. Kalabar hits her with freezing power, but as Marnie lies on the top of the pumpkin, she uses the last of her strength to place the Talisman, and the pumpkin lights up with power, freeing everyone frozen in the movie theater. Gwen and Aggie rush out to the town square, and Marnie rejoins her siblings.

Kalabar retreats to the steps of city hall, weakened. When Gwen asks him why, Kalabar proclaims that Gwen could have had him, but she chose a human instead, and then he steals the Talisman. Aggie and Gwen use their power to stop him, but aren’t powerful enough. Marnie notices power coming out of Dylan’s fingertips, and he is dismayed to find he is a warlock. The entire family joins hands, using their power to stop Kalabar and destroy him. The Talisman is then returned to Aggie, and is once again placed in the pumpkin where it belongs. Marnie then runs to find Luke, who has lost his good looks once Kalabar was destroyed. Marnie then gives Luke a kiss, telling him that she liked him when he agreed to help her. Marnie then has to return to the mortal world with her family, but Gwen surprises the family by asking Aggie to live with them, which she agrees. Gwen surprises Marnie further by telling her that she will be finishing Marnie’s training. The Pipers then leave a grateful Halloweentown as heroes.

September 3, 1996 – The Animated Series Quack Pack Premieres

QuackPack

“I feel like quacking so I think I will. I’m gonna quack quack quack until I get my fill.”

On September 3, 1996, the animated series Quack Pack made its debut in the Disney Afternoon lineup. The series centered around Donald Duck and his nephews, who are now teenagers, and given their own personalities, as opposed to how they were portrayed in the DuckTales series. The series itself was considered an extension of the Donald Duck short film series rather than the DuckTales series and comics, with Donald interacting with humans rather than with other anthropomorphic animals. It lasted one season, with only thirty-nine episodes; reruns eventually ran on Toon Disney, but were taken off the air in 2004. Quack Pack starred Tony Anselmo as Donald, Jeannie Elias as Huey, Pamela Adlon as Dewey, E. G. Daily as Louie, Kath Soucie as Daisy, and Roger Rose as Kent Powers.

The first episode, “The Really Mighty Ducks,” begins in the very messy room of the nephews, who sit around reading comic books. Donald stumbles into the room and is amazed at the filth, and demands they make it spotless. The nephews make excuses to not clean up, but Donald, who has been trapped in part of the mess, demands that they clean or else. They stop by Professor Ludwig von Drake’s lab, and ask him for something that will clean the room for them. The three find that he has a “superhero machine,” and decide to use it. The trio emerges as Brain Boy (Dewey), Captain Muscle (Louie), and The Really Incredibly Fast Guy (Huey). The Professor tells them to step back in and return to normal, but the boys refuse, stating that Donald can’t make them do anything anymore, since they have powers and he is “mere mortal.”

The Professor soon receives a call from the President of the International Organization of United Neighbors (IOUN), who asks if he knows of any superheroes. The boys soon volunteer, and the President dubs them the Tremendously Talented Trio of Truly Trusted Troubleshooters, or the T-Squad, for short. The three then go save the world with great fanfare, and are given an outer space station as their headquarters. However, their tasks to save the world are rather mundane, which include retrieving a kite from a tree and finding a man’s lost sock. Back in the boys’ room, Donald is still fuming about the mess they left behind. He then heads to Professor von Drake’s and finds the superhero machine. When he is inside, he is turned into a supervillain named The Duck of Doom, and vows to make the boys clean their room.

Donald flies out and finds the T-Squad’s headquarters, attacking them with a boulder, then a plane. The boys find a note attached to the plane: “Clean your room, or else. Love and kisses, your uncle, the Duck of Doom.” Huey declares that they must fight the Duck of Doom, and sends a note back: “No way, Jose!” The battle rages on, with Donald playing pranks, but the T-Squad doesn’t take him seriously. In a fit of rage, Donald gathers all the televisions in the world and threatens to destroy them all unless the boys clean their room. Daisy, who has a job as a television reporter, appears on the scene to narrate the story, but decides to play the bagpipes when she realizes that she’s not broadcasting to anyone. The head of the IOUN tells the T-Squad they must do something, and the T-Squad decides they have to declare war. Donald then smashes the televisions with a giant hammer when the boys refuse to clean, and when they try to fight their uncle, they are easily defeated.

When they reach their headquarters to find something to defeat him, they realize that they can’t find what they’re looking for, as they’ve left it in a huge mess. The boys soon decide that their uncle may be right, and head back to the Professor’s lab for help. The Professor fixes the machine to make it seem like the entire debacle never happened, and the boys rush home to clean their room, much to Donald’s surprise.

“Big wishes always spell big trouble. The bigger the wish, the bigger the trouble!”

On August 3, 1990, the animated film Ducktales: The Movie, Treasure of the Lost Lamp was released to theaters. Based on the popular animated television series and comic series by Carl Barks, the film was an international production, with tasks done in the United States, England, France, and China. The film was directed by Bob Hathcock, with screenplay by Alan Burnett. It stars Alan Young as Scrooge, Terence McGovern as Launchpad, Russi Taylor as the nephews and Webby, Rip Taylor as Gene, Richard Libertini as Dijon, and Christopher Lloyd as Merlock.

The film begins with Scrooge’s plane speeding through canyons, with Scrooge dismayed in finding that Launchpad never went to flight school. Scrooge, his nephews, and Webby are approaching an archaeological site where, supposedly, the treasure of Collie Baba and his forty thieves was hidden in a secret chamber. Unfortunately, Launchpad destroys most of the ancient ruins, and the plane, in the process of landing. The workers take Scrooge to a chest they found, and Scrooge believes it to be the treasure. When he opens the chest, however, he only finds old robes. Louie finds a map in one of the coat pockets, and Scrooge takes the map. One of the workers named Dijon runs off to his master, the warlock Merlock, who has been looking for the treasure for centuries. Merlock demands that Dijon follow Scrooge to the location on the map and steal the treasure, which he knows is a magic lamp. Scrooge soon heads out into the desert, and they arrive at the location on the map.

After digging up the secret pyramid where the treasure is located, the group goes inside to explore, and end up falling down a trap door. As they do, they find the location of the treasure, and excitedly leap across a rope bridge to get to it. Webby finds a lamp, and asks if she can keep it as part of her tea set. Scrooge agrees, and Dijon makes off with the rest of the treasure, joined by Merlock, who destroys the rope bridge before Scrooge and the gang are able to make their way back across. Seeing several large scorpions waiting below, the nephews and Launchpad come up with a quick plan to get out alive.  Outside, Merlock is digging thought the treasure, unable to find the lamp. Believing that Scrooge has it, Merlock turns into a large bird and searches for Scrooge. After escaping the pyramid, Scrooge is depressed, as he has lost the treasure he’d been searching for forty years. Webby offers the lamp, but Scrooge allows her to keep it. Merlock is unable to find Scrooge, and demands that Dijon finds Scrooge and retrieves the lamp.

Back in Duckburg, Webby is polishing the lamp, when it starts to move. Huey then rubs the lamp, and a genie pops out. Although he’s at first confused as to where he is, he soon is grateful for the kids letting him out. The four kids are excited about their prospect of having three wishes each, with Webby making the first wish for a baby elephant as a pet. The genie is worried that by granting such a huge wish, people will know he exists and come to take him away. Their nanny, Mrs. Beakley, finds the elephant, and Huey begrudgingly wishes away the elephant before she can show Scrooge. The kids take genie to hide in their room, but he slips on a skateboard when Scrooge is lecturing the kids on teasing Mrs. Beakley; fortunately, he takes on the guise of a kid, with the kids naming him Gene. After Scrooge begrudgingly allows Gene to stay the night, the kids set to work on asking Gene for their wishes. Gene reveals to the kids his desire of wanting to be just like the kids, and his fear of his meanest master, Merlock. The kids tell Gene that Merlock has to be dead by now, but Gene reveals that Merlock’s first wish is to live forever. The biggest problem, he then explains, is that Merlock holds a magic talisman that, once placed on the lamp, allows the wearer unlimited wishes. The kids reassure Gene that Merlock has no idea that Gene is with them before going to sleep.

The kids take turns with playing with Gene, with Webby taking him to join her tea party

The next morning, Merlock and Dijon arrive at Scrooge’s mansion, ready to steal the lamp, while the kids play with Gene as if he were a real boy. Merlock sneaks into the house as a rat, and unknowingly catches the attention of Mrs. Beakley, who beats him with a broom. Gene isn’t enjoying playing tea party with Webby, and accidentally gives her the idea to wish that all of her toys and dolls would come to life. The toys begin to terrorize the house, and when Gene asks Webby to turn them all back to toys, she regretfully tells him that she’d just used her last wish. Scrooge leaves his office to find the house run amok by toys, and demands an explanation. Louie angrily uses his last wish to turn everything back to normal, revealing to Scrooge Gene’s true identity. Scrooge takes the lamp from the kids, and his first wish is to have the treasure of Collie Baba. Scrooge then attends the Archaeological Ball, taking Gene with him. Merlock and Dijon follow him to the party to steal Gene. At the party, Scrooge start to announce that he found the treasure, but Gene takes Scrooge away in order to avoid capture by Merlock. Merlock turns into a bear to better attack Scrooge, but Gene helps Scrooge to hide by taking him inside the lamp.

After Merlock leaves, Gene tells Scrooge that he wishes to be a real boy, and Scrooge softens at this confession. When they see Merlock searching for him from the sky, Scrooge demands that Gene return to the lamp for his own protection. As Scrooge makes his way out, he trips over a food cart, knocking its contents to the floor. Thinking it’s the lamp, Scrooge grabs a gravy boat by mistake, leaving the lamp and Gene behind to be picked up by Dijon. As Dijon rushes to take the lamp to Merlock, Gene convinces Dijon to instead keep the lamp for himself. When Scrooge arrives home at his mansion, he is shocked to find that Dijon has wished for Scrooge’s fortune, and Scrooge is promptly arrested. As Scrooge sits in a jail cell, he is soon visited by his nephews, Webby, Mrs. Beakley, Duckworth, and Launchpad, who paid for his bail. The nephews get an idea to sneak back into the mansion to get Gene and Scrooge’s possessions back. Scrooge and the others plan a full scale attack to get inside, but don’t realize that Merlock, disguised as a cockroach, has also snuck in after them. Inside, while Dijon is distracted, Merlock steals the lamp, and his first act is to turn Dijon into a pig. He then turns Scrooge’s home into a fortress, and sends it flying to his home in the desert.

When Scrooge threatens to attack Merlock, Merlock retaliates by sending Scrooge flying from the fortress, but the nephews use their marbles to knock the lamp away from Merlock. As Scrooge and the lamp hurtle towards the Earth, Merlock chases after them in the guise of a griffin. The two struggle in the air, and Scrooge manages to knock Merlock’s talisman away, grab the lamp, and wish everything back to normal. Scrooge uses his last wish to make Gene a real boy, much to Gene’s excitement. Dijon, who was crawling around as a pig in Scrooge’s vault, turns back into a human, and the movie ends with the kids playing and Scrooge chasing Dijon down the streets of Duckburg for stealing Scrooge’s gold.

July 28, 1998 – The First Disney Cruise Land Ship, the Disney Magic, is Christened

“The Disney Magic…is a cruise liner that blends classic beauty and grace with all the modern luxuries, technologies, and comforts that make cruising a pleasure.”

On July 28, 1998, the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, known as the Disney Magic, was christened. The christening with a bottle of champagne was done by Roy E. Disney’s wife Patty, who is known as the ship’s Godmother; also in attendance were actor Sidney Poitier, voice actress Jodi Benson, and then-CEO Michael Eisner. Its maiden voyage would take place two days later as it headed to the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship was built by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, with a cost of $400 million to build. The ship holds around 2,700 passengers in 875 cabins, and weighs 83,000 tons. The idea behind the Disney Magic was to bring back the days of the “golden age” of ocean travel with luxury liners, with an interior built in an Art Deco design. The statue in the lobby of the ship is of Mickey Mouse as a helmsman.

July 16, 1993 – The Live-Action Feature Film Hocus Pocus is Released to Theaters

vlcsnap-2013-07-16-07h54m55s142

“Oh, come on! It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus!”

On July 16, 1993, the live action feature film Hocus Pocus was released to theaters. The film used computer graphics to create the illusion of a talking cat, and the flying scenes were done with wires on a soundstage in the Disney Studios. There is a Beauty and the Beast cameo in this film, as one child trick-or-treats as Mrs. Potts. Although the film garnered mixed to negative reviews on its release, it has since become a cult classic on video, and has been shown on ABC Family for its Halloween television events to a rather large audience of at least 2.5 million. The film was directed by Kenny Ortega; the story was written by David Kirschner and Mick Garris, with screenplay by Mick Garris, David M. Evans, and Neil Cuthbert. It stars Bette Midler as Winifred Sanderson, Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson, Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson, Omri Katz as Max Dennison, Thora Birch as Dani Dennison, and Vinessa Shaw as Allison.

The film begins in Salem, Massachusetts in 1693. Thackery Binx wakes to find that his sister Emily is missing, and runs to the woods, as the witches that live there have kidnapped her. Although he tries to save her, he is too late, as Emily has taken their potion, and they steal her life. Since he spilled their potion, preventing them from stealing more lives, the lead witch, Winifred Sanderson, turns him into an immortal black cat, having to live with his guilt for all eternity. The town takes the witches outside and hangs them, but before they die, the witches cast a spell that will bring them back on a Halloween night when a virgin lights a special black flame candle.

Max, new to the area, doesn’t believe in Halloween, nor does he believe in the Sanderson Witches

In 1993 Salem, the tale of the Sanderson Witches is still being told in class, and Max Dennison, who is new to the area, doesn’t believe a word of the tale. He is told off by another student named Allison when he reveals his belief that Halloween was created by candy companies, but is rejected when he gives her his phone number. Things get worse when he runs into two bullies in the cemetery on his way home, who steal his shoes. He is then forced to take his sister Dani trick-or-treating, where they run into the bullies again. Max and Dani get into a fight, but quickly make up. They arrive at Allison’s house to trick-or-treat, and the three decide to check out the old Sanderson house, which was once a museum, but closed due to many mysterious occurrences. Still thinking the Sanderson sisters are a myth, Max attempts to light the candle before he’s attacked by a black cat. However, he lights the candle, and the flame turns black.

Max, Allison, and Dani hide inside the house as the sisters return to life. Although overjoyed to have returned, they begin to wonder who lit the candle. When they attempt to kidnap Dani and use their spell on her, Max intervenes, but Winnie quickly overpowers him. Allison and Dani quickly attack the witches, freeing Max, who confuses the three by setting off the sprinkler system. He takes the book before he leaves, and the three kids quickly leave, with the witches in quick pursuit, although the witches quickly get distracted by modern inventions, including paved roads and fire trucks. Winifred explains to her sisters that they only have until sunrise to take the lives of the children of Salem, or they will turn to dust. Max, Allison, and Dani, following a talking black cat (Thackery) to the cemetery, which Thackery explains is hollowed ground. He then tells them that the legend is true, and he is doomed to live his life protecting the candle, making sure no “airheaded virgin” lights it on Halloween night. He then vows to be ready to face the Sandersons for what they did to his family three hundred years ago.

Just as Thackery finishes his explanation, the witches appear in the sky on their broomsticks. Winifred tries to take back her book, but Thackery prevents it by sitting on it. As the witches can’t catch the kids, Winifred brings back to life her former lover Billy Butcherson, whom she tasks with retrieving the book. The kids escape into the sewer, and the witches begin their plan of kidnapping children, using a bus driver’s help. They are confused by the tradition of children dressing up in costumes, and soon confuse a man dressed as the Devil as their master. Max, Dani, and Allison also run into trouble, as they try to tell a man dressed as a police officer what happened, although it’s just a man in a costume. They then run to the Town Hall to find Max and Dani’s parents, asking for help, although their parents don’t believe them. The witches then arrive at the party and bewitch all the parents into dancing until they die. The kids escape, with Billy and the witches in hot pursuit, but Allison gets an idea to take the witches to the high school.

At the high school, the kids trick the witches into the kiln in the art department, where they burn them alive. Thinking they’ve won, the kids celebrate, and head back to the Dennison’s. While they sleep, the witches leave the kiln, fried but still alive. They encounter the bullies when they search for the three, and kidnap them, trapping them in cages in their house. Winifred calls out for her book, and when Max and Allison decide to look at the book, it lets out a special light that alerts Winifred to its location. The witches travel to the Dennison’s, grab the book, and kidnap Dani and Thackery. As the witches travel back to their house, Sarah begins singing her enchanting song, magically hypnotizing the children of Salem to travel to their house. Max and Allison realize they only have until the morning to save Dani and the children, and come up with a plan. Max arrives just in time to stop Winifred from feeding Dani the potion, and tricks the witches into thinking the sun is rising. After freeing Dani and spilling the potion, the kids escape and drive away.

The sisters look at the remaining potion and bottle it up to use specifically on Dani

The sisters look at the remaining potion and bottle it up to use specifically on Dani

The sisters realize they’ve been tricked and bottle up the remaining potion, as Winifred wants to kill Dani specifically, in revenge for Dani calling her “ugly.” The witches quickly catch up with the kids, and they drive to the cemetery, where they run into Billy Butcherson. After cutting his mouth open, Billy explains that he wants nothing more than to see Winifred turn to dust, and helps keep the kids safe in his grave. The witches arrive at the cemetery to retrieve Dani, but Max readies himself with a baseball bat, although it proves ineffective against Winifred. Allison uses salt against the other witches while Winifred knocks Billy’s head off. Dani leaves the grave to help Billy find his head, which gives Winifred a chance to grab Dani. She forces Dani to drink the potion, and Thackery quickly jumps to the rescue, knocking the potion into Max’s hand. Seeing this as the only way to save Dani, Max drinks the potion. Winifred grabs Max and begins to suck his life away, although he squirms and struggles.

Max struggles enough to send Winifred flying from her broom to the ground, dropping Max as well. As she begins to suck the life away from Max, she has sucked enough life to turn into stone as the sun rises. The two other sisters turn into dust, as does Winifred, and Thackery is allowed to die, free from the curse. Max and Dani reunite and hug, and Billy returns to his grave. When Dani discovers Thackery’s body, she starts to cry, but soon spies Thackery’s spirit in the graveyard, letting her know that she helped to free his soul. His sister Emily appears, calling to him, and the two walk away together into the sunrise. All of the witches’ spells are broken, and everyone is free – except for the bullies, who are still caged in the Sanderson house.
