May 11, 2004 – The Compilation Album Mega Movie Mix is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“I’m Supergirl, and I’m here to save the world, but I wanna know who’s gonna save me?”

On May 11, 2004, the compilation album Mega Movie Mix was released through Walt Disney Records. The album features from Disney’s live action films, either in theaters or premiering on Disney Channel; this includes songs such as “Miracles Happen” by Myra from The Princess Diaries, and “Cinderella” by The Cheetah Girls from their Disney Channel Original Movie.

May 10, 2005 – Ollie Johnston Drives the Marie E. at Disneyland

On May 10, 2005, a special ceremony was held in Disneyland for animator and member of the Nine Old Men Ollie Johnston. Under the ruse of receiving a special honor for contributing to the Carolwood organization, Johnson was surprised to find that his locomotive, the Marie E., was on the Disneyland tracks to allow him one last ride. Johnson, along with Ward Kimball and Walt Disney, were train enthusiasts, but in his older age, Johnson had to sell his train as he was unable to operate it. Sold to none other than John Lasseter, Lasseter was able to find a way to bring it to the park in a special ceremony. Friends and family were gathered at Frontierland station to watch Johnson ride his beloved train one last time.

May 9, 2015 – The World Premiere for Tomorrowland is Held in Disneyland

“Are you excited to come in and see the movie?”

On May 9, 2015, a special world premiere for the new live-action feature film Tomorrowland was held in Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The “blue carpet” premiere featured a variety of stars, including actor and star of the film George Clooney, director Brad Bird, and Disney Legend Richard Sherman. A special afterparty was held in the Tomorrowland section of the park after the film premiere, attended by several of the stars and Disney CEO Bob Iger. The film was generally released to audiences on May 22.

May 8, 2000 – Elephant Journey Premieres in Syndication

On May 8, 2000, the newest New True-Life Adventure entitled Elephant Journey premiered in syndication. The New True-Life Adventures were meant to be a continuation of the original True-Life Adventure series that premiered in theaters, and Elephant Journey was the second of this new series to be released. The special followed a pack of pachyderms as they traveled through northwestern Nambia.

May 7, 2010 – The Disney Feature Animation Building is Renamed in Honor of Roy E. Disney

“Nobody appreciated what went on inside the building more than Roy Disney, so that is why we decided to put his name on the top of it.” – Bob Iger, President and CEO of the Walt Disney Company

On May 7, 2010, a special ceremony was held to remember Roy E. Disney as the Disney Feature Animation Building was renamed in his honor. Disney, who was one of the important players in saving Disney Animation in the late 1980s and through the 1990s, tragically passed away on December 16, 2009. The event, hosted by D23, also gave guests the opportunity to view two films with which Disney was heavily involved: the True-Life Fantasy Perri and the Disney animated feature film Fantasia 2000. The event was attended by producer Don Hahn, president and CEO Bob Iger, and Disney’s family.

May 6, 1990 – The Muppets at Walt Disney World Premieres on ABC

On May 6, 1990, the television special The Muppets at Walt Disney World premiered on NBC under the “Magical World of Disney” programming banner. The special featured the classic Jim Henson-created characters exploring the Florida theme park, and was the last Muppet feature that Henson would work on before his untimely passing. It was created to help highlight the merger between The Walt Disney Company and the Jim Henson Company, a merger that wouldn’t fully take place until 2004. The episode also starred Charles Grodin, Raven-Symoné, and Michael Eisner.

May 5, 2005 – The Attraction Soarin’ Opens in Epcot

“An exhilarating international adventure”

On May 5, 2005, the film attraction Soarin’ opened in Epcot’s The Land pavilion. Similar to the original Soarin’ Over California attraction that opened in Disneyland in 2001, the attraction seats guests in a contraption that gives the illusion that they are “soaring” over majestic views of California that they view on an 80-foot IMAX projection screen. The attraction was changed in 2016 to show guests views of the world rather than just California, including views of the Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, or the Great Wall of China.

May 4, 2004 – Aida Announces Closing Date

Aida is a show that has delighted us and defied all expectations.” – Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Productions

On May 4, 2004, the Broadway show Aida announced that it would be closing on September 5 of that year. The show, open since March 23, 2000, also announced the return of actor Adam Pascal, who originated the role of Radames, who would stay with the show until its closing. By 2004, Aida was the only show to still be running from the 1999-2000 theatrical season. When the show closed, it ran for 1,852 performances in the Palace Theatre.

May 3, 1994 – Disney Announces Intention to Start a Cruise Line

“Operating our own cruise line will allow us to bring a new dimension of entertainment to our guests.” – Michael Eisner, then-Disney CEO

On May 3, 1994, the Walt Disney Company publicly announced their intention to create a cruise line, with their first ship estimated to be ready to sail in 1998. This announcement came on the heels of some recent announcements of expansions of the Disney brand, including the renovation of the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City, plans to build a historical theme park in Virginia, and the first professional season of the Mighty Ducks hockey team. Disney had licensed its characters to be a part of the Florida-based Premiere Cruise Lines, but had recently ceased the eight-year agreement with the company. The first ship in the Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Magic, sailed out on its maiden voyage on July 30, 1998.

May 2, 2014 – The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Attraction has Dedication Ceremony

“Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is both literally and figuratively the centerpiece of New Fantasyland, so we knew it had to be something special.”

On May 2, 2014, a special dedication ceremony was held for the newest attraction in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park: The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Known as the “crowning jewel” of New Fantasyland, the long-awaited attraction was introduced by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs, along with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. At the ceremony, Staggs announced that the official opening date to the public would be May 28th, but invited everyone to celebrate that the final component had been added to the ride. The ride features the latest in Audio-Animatronics and special effects, and the coaster itself features the novelty of swinging cars that rock as the coaster travels down the track.
