December 11, 1982 – The CBS Special Winnie the Pooh and Friends Premieres

On December 11, 1982, the special Winnie the Pooh and Friends premiered on CBS in the Walt Disney programming block, a part of the Walt Disney Anthology series. This episode featured a short feature from Winnie the Pooh, along with a couple of other short films featuring Donald Duck and Chip ‘n’ Dale. The special ran for one hour.

December 10, 1993 – The Greenhouse Tours Begin in Epcot’s The Land Pavilion

On December 10, 1993, the guided Greenhouse Tours began in Epcot’s The Land Pavilion. Replacing the Tomorrow’s Harvest Tours, the Greenhouse Tours were led by agricultural graduate students through working greenhouses filled with various flora and fauna, explaining agricultural concepts used throughout the park such as hydroponics, aquaculture, and drip irrigation. The tour was renamed the Behind the Seeds Tour in September, 1996.

December 9, 1993 – Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin Attraction Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Set foot inside the winding stone passageways of Agrabah and make your own wishes come true.”

On December 9, 1993, the walkthrough attracktion Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin opened in Disneyland Paris’s Adventureland area. Guests walk down passageways, reliving the movie one major scene at a time via miniature scenes. It is recommended for younger guests.

December 8, 2005 – Disney Live! Winnie the Pooh Begins Limited Engagement in New York City

On December 8, 2005, a month-long holiday engagement of Disney Live! Winnie the Pooh kicked off in New York City’s Beacon Theatre. The show, produced by Feld Entertainment, takes audiences deep into the Hundred Acre Wood for an adventure with Winnie the Pooh and his friends, complete with classic songs from the hit animated features. The show featured several Broadway-caliber contributors, including director B T McNicholl, music director David Loud, and Tony-nominated costume designer Gregg Barnes. The 90-minute show ran until December 28.

December 7, 2015 – Chairman and CEO Bob Iger Holds Ceremony to Dedicate Walt Disney’s Restored Office

On December 7, 2015, Chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company Bob Iger held a special ceremony to dedicate the newly restored office of Walt Disney. The office was a painstaking project of the Disney Archivists, restoring it down to the tiniest details. Part of the office was originally seen at the One Man’s Dream attraction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, while another part was shown at the Main Street Opera House in Disneyland; archivists were able to bring back the original furnishings, awards, and collection of miniatures that were featured decades ago. Also featured at the ceremony were Disney chief archivist emeritus Dave Smith, Disney Legend Richard Sherman, and Walt Disney’s granddaughters Joanna Miller, Jennifer Goff, and Michelle Lund.

December 6, 1992 – The Store Tinker Bell’s Treasures Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

On December 6, 1992, the shop Tinker Bell’s Treasures opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The shop began as the Tinker Bell Toy Shoppe, originally opening in November 1971. The store, originally located next to Mickey’s Philharmagic, featured a variety of Disney Princess and Disney Fairy merchandise. There was also an area where kids could, upon finding a small chest, potentially wake up Tinker Bell. The store was closed in 2010, with the area becoming a part of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

December 5, 1986 – America Officially Celebrates Walt Disney Recognition Day

“I call upon all Americans to recognize this very special day in the spirit in which Walt Disney entertained young and older Americans.”

On December 5, 1986, the United States of America officially celebrated Walt Disney Recognition Day. The celebration, passed by the Senate on August 23, 1986, and celebrated on the birthday of Walt Disney, was honored via a proclamation by then-President Ronald Reagan on what would have been Disney’s 85th birthday. In a special statement, Reagan recognized Disney’s contributions to the field of entertainment, his virtues and imagination, and the sense of wonder he gave to people the world over.

December 4, 2015 – The Star Wars Launch Bay Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On December 4, 2015, new Star Wars-themed offerings were unveiled at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, including the Star Wars Launch Bay. The Launch Bay is the main area where guests can see different exhibits of Star Wars props and replicas of iconic ships. Guests are also given the opportunity to pick either to follow the Dark Side or the Rebels, with the chance to meet Darth Vader or Chewbacca. There is also a large merchandise section where guests can buy authentic costumes, artwork, and models.

December 3, 2010 – Disney Announces Ben Sherwood as New President of ABC News

On December 3, 2010, the Disney/ABC Television Group released an announcement that journalist and author Ben Sherwood would take over as the president of ABC News. Sherwood, a former executive producer of Good Morning America and best-selling author of The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, began working with ABC News in 1989 as an investigative associate producer and producer for PrimeTime Live, leaving in 1997 to join NBC’s Nightly News with Tom Brokaw as a broadcast producer. He returned to ABC in 2004 to serve as the executive producer of Good Morning America, leading the programs to two of its most successful seasons in the show’s history.

December 2, 2013 – WestJet and Disney’s Magic Plane is Unveiled

“Keep an eye to the sky for Sorcerer Mickey…”

On December 2, 2013, airline WestJet unveiled their newest aircraft known as the Magic Plane, featuring Sorcerer Mickey on the tail. The plane is a custom-painted Boeing Next-Generation 737-800, and was painted and unveiled in Calgary, Canada. The entire plane, inside and out, is designed to tell a story and bring guests Disney magic. The plane started flying the next day on December 3, with the inaugural flight from Calgary to Orlando, Florida.
