June 13, 1996 – The Specialty Shop The Sanctuary of Quasimodo Opens in Disneyland

On June 13, 1996, the specialty merchandise shop The Sanctuary of Quasimodo opened in Disneyland’s Fantasyland area. The shop replaced the Disney Villains shop (which itself replaced Briar Rose Cottage, Mickey’s Christmas Chalet, and Merlin’s Magic Shop). The Sanctuary of Quasimodo was created to promote the animated feature film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and featured a vignette in the window of Quasimodo ringing the bells of Notre Dame. The shop closed on February 9, 1997, and was replaced by the Knights Shop.

June 12, 1975 – The Walt Disney Story Featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln Opens in Disneyland

“Encounter the Great Emancipator as he returns to tell the tale of generations past and share his stirring vision of the future.”

On June 12, 1975, the popular Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction returned to Disneyland and reopened as The Walt Disney Story Featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. The attraction originally closed on January 1, 1973, to be replaced by The Walt Disney Story. However, the attraction was brought back due to the demand from guests. The original attraction was created for the New York World’s Fair, presented at the State of Illinois pavilion, and opened in Disneyland on July 18, 1965. Since its combination with The Walt Disney Story, the attraction remains open and remains one of the most popular attractions within the park.

June 1, 1997 – The Disneyland Parade The Lion King Celebration Ends

“Oh, I just can’t wait to be king!”

On June 1, 1997, the Lion King Celebration parade ended its run in Disneyland. The parade, starting on July 1, 1994, was notable for being the first parade to feature Audio-Animatronic figures outside of stationary attractions. It was also a combination parade and stage show, as the parade would stop at various intervals on the route and perform songs from the film, ending each performance with a version of “Circle of Life” while an Audio-Animatronic Simba let out a roar from the Pride Rock float. The parade also featured actors dressed as birds performing acrobatic stunts and remote-controlled animals.

May 25, 1983 – The Specialty Store Mickey’s Christmas Chalet Opens in Disneyland

On May 25, 1983, the specialty Christmas store Mickey’s Christmas Chalet opened in Disneyland’s Fantasyland area. The shop sold Disney-themed Christmas ornaments and décor year round until it closed on May 17, 1987. The store could be seen as a promotional shop for the featurette Mickey’s Christmas Carol, which was released in December of 1983.

May 20, 2015 – The Legacy Collection: Disneyland is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Disneyland is your land.”

On May 20, 2015, the eighth entry in the Legacy Collection series, entitled The Legacy Collection: Disneyland, was released exclusively at Disneyland Resort to celebrate the park’s 60th anniversary. The release featured three discs on music and audio featured at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure attractions, ranging from the likes of “Let’s Dance at Disneyland” to “Fantasmic!” The album also features a 24-page booklet with liner notes that provide the historical background about some of the park’s most beloved attractions. The album was generally released on August 21, 2015.

May 14, 2016 – Disney Dollars Cease Being Sold in Disney Parks

“Disney Dollars may be spent or collected and saved as souvenirs and are redeemable at any time before or after any period of inactivity.”

On May 14, 2016, the use of Disney Dollars ends in all Disney parks. First offered on May 5, 1987, the Disney-based currency were able to be purchased and used at a variety of park locations, including ticketing locations, food stations, and merchandise areas; the use was then expanded to use in Disney Stores. Guests could buy the currency with credit cards and cashier’s checks. The bills were offered in three denominations: $1 (featuring Mickey Mouse), $5 (featuring Goofy), and $10 (featuring Minnie); the Minnie Mouse $10 began to be offered in late 1989, while $1 and $5 were redesigned earlier that year. Although Disney Dollars are no longer being sold, they are still accepted at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and select Disney Stores.

May 13, 1996 – The Antiques Shop One-of-a-Kind Closes in Disneyland

On May 13, 1996, the antique shop located in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square, known as One-of-a-Kind, officially closed. Open in the area in 1967, the store was inspired by Lillian Disney’s love of antiques, and featured a variety of specialty pieces, such as music boxes and porcelain vases. In 1995, the store shifted from antiques to reproductions and gifts. After closing in 1996, the store became the Disney-themed cooking store Le Gourmet.

May 8, 1991 – Disney Announces Plans for Disneyland Expansion

On May 8, 1991, Disney officially announced their plans for a $3-billion expansion to Disneyland, including a second theme park that was going to be called Westcot. Also announced in this expansion was a shopping district with hotels. Westcot was to be California’s version of Epcot, a park dedicated to science, technology, and innovation, but with a more modern, Californian look to it. Unfortunately, the park ran into issues, particularly with its placement in the city of Anaheim. The initial failure of Disneyland Paris also led to the Westcot project being shelved in 1995.

April 30, 1995 – The Beauty and the Beast Stage Show Closes in Disneyland’s Videopolis

“There must be more than this provincial life!”

On April 30, 1995, the stage show version of the animated feature film Beauty and the Beast closed in Disneyland’s Videopolis area. Opening on April 11, 1992, it was similar to the stage version that premiered in Walt Disney World, but featured a different script, along with different sets and costumes. The show was highly popular, leading to the creation of the Broadway version of the animated film. There have been no plans, as of 2019, to revive the show in the park, even though the Walt Disney World version has been revised and is still a popular attraction among guests; however, scenes from the film have been incorporated into the live show Storytelling at Royal Theatre.

April 17, 2009 – The Themed Store Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Opens in Disneyland

“Behold a royal transformation as everyday kids turn into elegant princesses and shining knights – right before your eyes!”

On April 17, 2009, the popular shop Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique opened in Disneyland. Originally opening in Walt Disney World on April 5, 2006, the store is a salon that styles girls to look like princesses and boys to look like knights. Little girls can pick from one of eight packages, ranging from being styled like Anna and Elsa from Frozen, to a specialty package that dressed them up to look like a Disney princess. Boys can choose the Knight Package, which includes hairstyling, a sword and shield set, and confetti. This was the fourth version of the salon to open in Disney parks, with others opening in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland Hotel.
