January 16

January 16, 1994 – The First Walt Disney World Marathon Takes Place

On January 16, 1994, the inaugural Walt Disney World Marathon took place. Featuring 8,200 runners, the marathoners were taken through the (at the time) three theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney-MGM Studios, as well as several highways. Finishers were awarded a medal upon completion featuring Mickey Mouse as a runner. The design of the medal, as well as the course of the marathon, has changed in the over 25 years since its inception, and the number of runners has grown to over 55,000.

January 11, 2002 – The Disney’s California Adventure Attraction Superstar Limo Closes

“Don’t worry, we’ll get you there in time! Our first stop is glamorous Rodeo Drive.”

On January 11, 2002, the dark ride attraction Superstar Limo closed in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney’s California Adventure Park. Guests boarded a purple limousine and toured around “Tinsel Town,” reveling in caricatures of their favorite celebrities and Hollywood landmarks. Celebrities in the attraction included Regis Philbin, Cher, and Cindy Crawford. The attraction was open for less than a year before California Adventure underwent a massive overhaul; the attraction’s former space has since been replaced by Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

January 8

January 8, 2010 – The Muppets Appear in the Disney’s Honorary VoluntEars Cavalcade Parade at Disneyland and Walt Disney World

“…the cavalcade celebrates volunteerism and features Kermit, Miss Piggy, along with special floats and vehicles festooned with bright balloons and flanked by parade dancers.”

On January 8, 2010, a special parade kicked off in Disneyland and Walt Disney World, known as Disney’s Honorary VoluntEars Cavalcade Parade. This parade ties in with the new “Give a Disney Day, Get a Disney Day” program set up by Disney, where guests can get a free Disney Theme Park ticket after performing a day of volunteer service with a participating organization; this promotion featured the Muppets as the ambassador characters. This was also the first time that Kermit and Miss Piggy appeared daily in Disneyland. This parade occurred once a day, alongside the Celebrate! A Street Party parade, and pulled guests who had volunteered through the program to be part of the parade.

January 7

January 7, 2015 – The Taste Pilots’ Grill Closes in Disney’s California Adventure

“Where Great Food IS Rocket Science!”

On January 7, 2015, the Taste Pilots’ Grill closed in Disney’s California Adventure Park’s Condor Flats area. The quick service restaurant opened on February 8, 2001, and offered American-style fare with flight-based puns for names, such as the Alpha-Bravo-Chili Burger, the Hot Wing Squadron, and the Aer-O-Space Onion Rings. The restaurant was themed after a desert airfield, but seemed to be out of place in the park. After the restaurant closed, the place was reopened as the Smokejumpers Grill, and was merged with the Grizzly Peak area.

January 4

January 4, 2018 – The Edison Opens in Disney Springs

“Swing by this lavish, industrial gothic-style hotspot for classic American cuisine, craft cocktails and unique entertainment.”

On January 4, 2018, the casual dining restaurant The Edison opened in Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs area. Styled after a 1920s electric company, and inspired by the invention and imagination of that era, the restaurant serves classic cocktails and hearty American fare. Dishes on the menu include the specialty Edison Burger, the Black Cherry Cream Shake, and the Menlo Park Mac & Cheese.

January 1

January 1, 2008 – The Captain’s Grille Opens in Walt Disney World

On January 1, 2008, the Captain’s Grille opened in Walt Disney World’s Yacht Club Resort, replacing the Yacht Club Galley. The restaurant’s theme matched that of the Yacht Club Resort, specializing in classic seafood dishes. It served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with dishes ranging from smoked salmon on a toasted bagel, New England-style lobster roll, and buttermilk fried rock shrimp. The restaurant closed on May 24, 2017, and the area was turned into the Ale & Compass Restaurant on November 4, 2017.

December 31, 1899 – Harrison Hightower III Mysteriously Disappears

“1899年に起きたオーナーの謎の失踪事件以来、恐怖のホテルと呼ばれるようになった「タワー・オブ・テラー」。”

According to legend: on December 31, 1899, antiques collector and builder of the Hotel Hightower, Harrison Hightower III, disappeared mysteriously after his acquisition of the Shiriki Utundu idol. Of course, this is part of the story of the Tower of Terror attraction in Tokyo DisneySea, and the character of Hightower was made to resemble Imagineer Joe Rohde. The story of the attraction is that after Hightower’s disappearance, the New York City Preservation Society took over the restoration of the hotel, and now offered tours to the public, with terrifying results.

December 29, 1974 – John Lennon Signs Papers at Walt Disney World Dissolving The Beatles

On December 29, 1974, it is widely believed that John Lennon, who was staying on vacation at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Resort, signed the paperwork that effectively dissolved the partnership of the band the Beatles. Although the rest of the band had signed the papers at Apple Headquarters, Lennon had been a no-show at the meeting, and instead had gone to celebrate Christmas at Walt Disney World with his secretary and lover May Pang.

December 28, 2010 – Disneyland Suspends Ticket Sales After Filling to Capacity

“Certainly we want all of our guests to have the best guest experience, so we have measures in place to make sure that we deliver the best time.” – Betty Sanchez, Disneyland Park Spokesperson

On December 28, 2010, two hours after opening, Disneyland suspended ticket sales, as the park was filled to capacity. Although guests were directed to California Adventure, that park was soon filled to capacity as well. According to park officials, it was common for the parks to fill up in the holiday season, especially if the California weather was cooperating.

December 25, 1999 – The Television Special Walt Disney World’s Very Merry Christmas Parade Premieres on ABC

On December 24, 1999, the holiday television special Walt Disney World’s Very Merry Christmas Parade premiered on ABC. This was the 17th annual holiday parade from the Florida parks. Although the parade had been a staple of holiday specials since the 1980s, this special was notable for deviating from the norm and airing at nighttime instead of the daytime. This parade was hosted by Mitchell Ryan, Susan Sullivan, and Wayne Brady, and featured musical performances by *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Harry Connick Jr., SHeDAISY, and James Ingram.
