August 25, 2011 – Memberships for Disney’s Blast Online End

“The Number One Online Club for Kids”

On August 25, 2011, memberships for Disney’s interactive and educational forum Disney’s Blast Online officially ended. Introduced in 1997, it was originally known as Disney’s Daily Blast, featuring a variety of games and activities for families to enjoy, including Mickey’s Robot Roundup, Goofy Track and Field, and Pinocchio Puppet Theater. It was available as a subscription service, which provided users an ad-free, immersive experience. In 2007, it was renamed as Disney Game Kingdom Online.

August 13, 2017 – The Great Movie Ride Attraction Closes

“A spectacular journey into the movies.”

On August 13, 2017, the Hollywood Studios attraction The Great Movie Ride officially closed. Open since May 1, 1989, the attraction was a ride-through tour that brought guests to the movies allowing them to venture into the scenes of some of the world’s most beloved films, including Alien, Mary Poppins, and Casablanca. The attraction was sponsored by Turner Classic Movies starting in 2014, featuring host and film historian Robert Osborne as the narrator through the films. The closing of this attraction makes it the final attraction from Hollywood Studios’ opening day to close.

August 9, 1989 – The Tower of Life Debuts in Epcot

On August 9, 1989, the Tower of Life, the landmark of the newest Wonders of Life Pavilion, was put into place in Epcot. Constructed to resemble a strand of DNA, the tower was representative of the area’s focus on health and wellness. It stood at 76-feet tall, and was made of colored steel and carbon. The tower stood until 2007, when it was quickly and quietly taken down as the Wonders of Life Pavilion was closed.

July 30, 1956 – The Mineral Hall Store Opens in Disneyland

“An exciting display of minerals glowing in the beauty of black light!”

On July 30, 1956, the Mineral Hall store and display opened in Disneyland’s Frontierland. Guests could enter the hall and see a variety of minerals under regular light and black light; there was a bonus of guests being able to see how their clothes would glow under the black light. Guests were also able to purchase the types of minerals on display. The store closed in 1963.

July 29, 2007 – The Broadway Musical Beauty and the Beast Closes

“A ‘tale as old as time’ reached the end of the line July 20 when Beauty and the Beast gave its 5,464th – and final – Broadway performance and at last took its leave of the Lunt-Fontanne…”

On July 29, 2007, after 46 previews and 5,461 performances, the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast closed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. As of 2018, it is the tenth-longest running musical on Broadway, and has had several national tours. Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who was instrumental in bringing Disney to the Great White Way, was present at this final performance, as were many fans, friends, and special cast members. Recording artist Donny Osmond reprised his role as Gaston for the final show, with Anneliese Van Der Pol and Steve Blanchard playing the role of Belle and the Beast, respectfully.

July 22, 1989 – The Display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions Closes

On July 22, 1989, the Main Street display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions permanently closed. Originally opening in 1973, the display showed proposed and planned attractions for the California theme park, complete with artists’ renderings, notes, and models by the Imagineers. This display took the place of the Legacy of Walt Disney area, as most of the items from that attraction were moved to the Walt Disney Story area. After Preview of Coming Attractions closed, it was replace by the Disneyland Showcase, a shop that, as of 2018, still stands on Main Street.

July 18, 1955 – The Puffin Bakery Opens in Disneyland

On July 18, 1955, the Puffin Bakery opened on Disneyland’s Main Street. Opening the day after the park’s grand opening, the bakery featured a variety of pastries and drinks for guests to either enjoy at the shop’s window front, or take with them as they traveled through the park. The shop closed in 1960, and was replaced with the sponsored Sunkist Citrus House.

July 13, 2006 – The Attraction Stitch Encounter Opens in Hong Kong Disneyland

“Here you get to talk to the blue, mischievous alien, and you’re sure to get a good laugh!”

On July 13, 2006, the interactive attraction Stitch Encounter opened in Hong Kong Disneyland. Similar to the attraction Turtle Talk with Crush, guests can video chat with Stitch from the animated feature film Lilo & Stitch, communicating with guests through jokes and games. This was the first version of the attraction to open; similar attractions opened Disneyland Paris’ Walt Disney Studios Park and Shanghai Disneyland. The original Hong Kong Disneyland attraction closed on May 2, 2016.

July 6, 1994 – The Captain EO Attraction Closes

“We are here to change the world.”

On July 6, 1994, the 3D musical film attraction Captain EO closed in Walt Disney World’s Epcot Park. Opening on September 12, 1986, the attraction featured pop star Michael Jackson in a science fiction musical adventure, with Jackson playing the titular role and fighting against the Supreme Leader (played by Anjelica Huston) and her army of darkness. The film was popular enough to become an attraction in the other Disney Parks, including Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland. The last version of the attraction was officially closed in 1998; after Jackson’s death in 2009, the attraction was brought back to the parks for a limited time.

July 3, 2017 – The Animation Academy Closes

“Learn to draw your favorite Disney characters!”

On July 3, 2017, the Animation Academy, located in Walt Disney World’s DisneyQuest, closed. Opening on June 19, 1998, his was an instructor-led activity where guests could learn how to draw classic Disney characters on a digital screen, and purchase their sheets to take home as a souvenir. This was the first version of the Animation Academy, with similar ones opening in L’Art de l’Animation Disney of Disneyland Paris, Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios Park, Disney California Adventure, and Hong Kong Disneyland’s Town Square.
