December 18, 2009 – The Updated Version of The Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln Opens

“Encounter the Great Emancipator as he returns to tell the tale of generations past and share his stirring vision of the future.”

On December 18, 2009, the updated attraction The Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln officially reopened. This update featured the latest in Audio-Animatronic technology, including a new version of President Lincoln; his new face can create a total of 20 different functions, as opposed to the seven of the earlier version. Imagineers knew how popular this attraction is with guests, and made sure that the attraction blended old and new elements to keep the feel of the original attraction.

December 6, 2012 – The Attraction Under the Sea: Voyage of the Little Mermaid Opens in Walt Disney World

“Descend below the waves – without ever getting wet – for a whimsical musical adventure awash with scenes from the animated classic.”

On December 6, 2012, the dark-ride attraction Under the Sea: Voyage of the Little Mermaid opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park as part of the New Fantasyland expansion. Guests board a clamshell and take a journey through the story of The Little Mermaid, complete with music and dancing audio-animatronic figures. The attraction was also given an interactive queue area, where guests need to find objects to help Scuttle. This attraction is similar to The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure in Disney California Adventure park.

November 24, 1995 – The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights Begins Showing in Walt Disney World

On November 24, 1995, the popular holiday display Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights began showing on the Residential Street Backlot area of Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios Park). This attraction began in 1986 as a neighborhood holiday light show by Jennings and Mitzi Osborne of Little Rock, Arkansas. The display grew bigger and bigger throughout the years, with more and more people stopping by to see the display; neighbors filed a lawsuit, and the light display was shut down by the Arkansas Supreme Court. This lawsuit caught the attention of Disney, who offered to set up the display in Disney-MGM rather than a residential neighborhood in Orlando. The attraction was a top draw for guests during the holiday season, especially with the addition of the “dancing lights,” which were timed along to a list of holiday music. The display ended its run on January 6, 2016.

November 3, 1998 – The Skyway to Tomorrowland Attraction Closes in Tokyo Disneyland

“See Tokyo Disneyland from the air”

On November 3, 1998, the Tokyo Disneyland attraction Skyway to Tomorrowland closed. Opening on April 15, 1983, it was the third version of the attraction, based on the original Disneyland attraction that opened in 1956. It was considered a Fantasyland attraction, taking guests by a gondola on a cable from Fantasyland over to Tomorrowland. While it was the third version of the attraction to open, it was the second to close, with the version in Walt Disney World closing the following year.

November 2, 1992 – The Disneyland Attraction Mission to Mars Closes

“Welcome to Mission Control, space travelers.”

On November 2, 1992, after almost twenty years of operation, Disneyland’s Tomorrowland attraction Mission to Mars closed. The attraction was a revamped version of the original Flight to the Moon; a revision had been required since the United States landed on the moon in 1969. Clips from the 1957 Disney anthology episode “Mars and Beyond” were also used in the attraction, giving guests an idea of what they could expect once man could reach Mars. The attraction was not replaced for a lengthy period of time, but simply shuttered; in 1998, part of the building was used as part of Redd Rocket’s Pizza Port restaurant.

October 19, 1989 – The Attraction Cranium Command Opens in Epcot’s Future World

“Your job, if you can cut it, is to run the most sophisticated information system ever devised.”

On October 19, 1989, the attraction Cranium Command opened as part of the Wonders of Life pavilion in Epcot’s Future World. Like many attractions within Epcot, this was an educational attraction that taught guests about how the brain worked. Guests sit in an auditorium that acts as a “control center” for the brain of a 12-year-old boy named Bobby, and observe as rookie Buzzy is given the controls by General Knowledge. The film was directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, who would go on to direct Beauty and the Beast, and starred George Wendt, Dana Carvey, Charles Grodin, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Kevin Nealon. The attraction closed on January 1, 2007.

October 11, 2003 – The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Attraction Closes

“A world with so many eager customers is always worth our greatest effort.”

On October 11, 2003, the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter attraction officially closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. A joint attraction between Disney and George Lucas that opened on June 20, 1995, it featured the story of an alien that was accidentally transported into the X-S Tech laboratory. A dark sci-fi themed interactive sensory adventure, it featured binaural sound and other effects to enhance what came to be known as a “4D” experience. The attraction was replaced with Stitch’s Great Escape!, which used a majority of ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter’s technology.

October 2, 1999 – FastPass is Offered in Disneyland Paris

“Squeeze as much of the magic as possible into your stay by reducing the waiting time with a FASTPASS.”

On October 2, 1999, the first Disneyland Paris FastPass was offered, for the attraction Indiana Jones et le Temple de Péril. This addition to the park was created to help guests streamline their experience; guests would pick up a pass for a popular attraction, which would give them a set time to come back and bypass the lengthier queues. It was originally tested and offered in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in July of the same year, and was later offered in Disneyland for the it’s a small world attraction on November 19.

September 25, 2009 – Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy Opens in Disneyland

“Brace yourself for eerie encounters with spooky star fields and menacing meteors.”

On September 25, 2009, the Halloween overlay of the popular attraction Space Mountain, known as Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, opened in Disneyland. This version of the attraction first opened in Hong Kong Disneyland two years prior, and features special ghostly lights and sounds as guest soar through the galaxy. This holiday version has since become a popular attraction, and has been brought back annually.

September 15, 1996 – Ellen’s Energy Adventure Attraction Opens in Epcot

“What is, ‘who is it?’”

On September 15, 1996, the attraction Ellen’s Energy Adventure opened in Epcot’s Universe of Energy. Originally replacing the Universe of Energy attraction, this updated attraction featured Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Nye “The Science Guy,” Jamie Lee Curtis, Alex Trebek, and Johnny Gilbert, teaching guests about how energy is produced, the current sources of energy, and the search for new, renewable sources of energy. Guests sit in a special seating area and watch a series of films, as well as an audio-animatronic diorama featuring a primeval world; the seating sections split apart at this point to move through the diorama before reassembling for the final two films. The attraction was closed on August 13, 2017, to make way for a new Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction.
