September 28, 2004 – The Self-Titled Third Studio Album by Hilary Duff is Released Through Hollywood Records

On September 28, 2004, the self-titled third studio album by Disney Channel star Hilary Duff was released by Hollywood Records. The album contained two promotional singles: “Fly” and “Someone’s Watching Over Me.” While critical reviews ranged from mixed to negative, the album debuted and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. It would eventually go on to be certified platinum by the RIAA. The album fared better in Canada, peaking at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and going on to be certified triple platinum.

September 27, 2005 – Sotheby’s Holds Auction of 75 Mickey Mouse Statues

“Sotheby’s and Disney have a long-standing relationship, and we are thrilled to have been selected to conduct this special auction of 75 inspired visions of Mickey Mouse in a sale that will benefit a host of worthy charitable organizations.”

On September 27, 2005, Sotheby’s Auction House held a special auction of 75 uniquely designed statues of Mickey Mouse that were created and toured around the country to celebrate 75 years of Mickey Mouse. The statues were designed by a host of celebrities, ranging from Elton John to Nine Old Men animator Ollie Johnston. About $614,500 was raised from the auction; the money went to about 50 separate organizations, from Make-A-Wish Foundation to the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation.

September 25, 2007 – The Rascal Flatts Album Still Feels Good is Released Through Lyric Street Records

On September 25, 2007, the fifth studio album by country recording artist Rascal Flatts, entitled Still Feels Good, was released through Disney-owned Lyric Street Records. The album spawned five singles, including “Take Me There” and “Here,” which both peaked at number one on the US Country charts. The album itself peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums charts, selling 547,000 copies in its first week.

September 17, 2004 – Eleven New Inductees are Named Disney Legends

On September 17, 2004, the newest group of Disney Legends were honored at a special ceremony at the Disney Legends Plaza at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The ceremonies were presided over by then CEO Michael Eisner, who originally created the honor in 1987. The honorees that were present participated in the handprint ceremony, with their handprints then hung in the plaza for all to see. Among those honored were film and television producer Bill Anderson, actor Tim Conway, Imagineer Rolly Crump, Imagineer Alice Davis, actress Karen Dotrice, actor Matthew Garber, ABC Chairman of the Board Leonard Goldenson, Imagineer Bob Gurr, conductor and orchestrator Irwin Kostal, Imagineer Ralph Kent, and animator and story man Mel Shaw.

September 16, 2006 – The Animated Series Handy Manny Premieres on Playhouse Disney

On September 16, 2006, the educational animated series Handy Manny premiered on the Playhouse Disney programming block on Disney Channel. The series featured Latino character Manny Garcia, a handyman that works in the multicultural neighborhood of Sheetrock Hills to fix various problems. The show helped teach children problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, as well as basic Spanish words and phrases. The series ran for 113 episodes, and was created by Roger Bollen, Marilyn Sadler, and Rick Gitelson. The series featured Wilmer Valderrama as Manny, Carlos Alazraqui as Felipe, Dee Bradley Baker as Turner, Nike Futterman as Stretch and Squeeze, Tom Kenny as Mr. Lopart and Pat, Kath Soucie as Dusty, Fred Stoller as Rusty, Nancy Truman as Kelly, and Grey DeLisle as Flicker.

September 14, 2002 – The Animated Series Disney’s Fillmore! Premieres on ABC Kids

On September 14, 2002, the animated series Disney’s Fillmore! premiered on the ABC Kids programming block. The series revolved around main character Cornelius Fillmore, a teenage delinquent with a choice of redemption through his work with the Safety Patrol at X Middle School. The series was cancelled after two seasons with 26 episodes released, and has since attracted a strong, loyal fanbase. The series was created by Scott M. Gimple, and featured Orlando Brown as Cornelius Fillmore, Tara Strong as Ingrid Third, Horatio Sanz as Horation Vallejo, Lauren Tom as Karen Tehama, Danny Tamberelli as Joseph Anza, Kyle Sullivan as Danny O’Farrell, and Wendie Malick as Dawn S. Folsom.

September 11, 2000 – The Reality Series House Calls Premieres on UPN

On September 11, 2000, the new reality series from Buena Vista Television, entitled House Calls, premiered on UPN. The series, created through a distribution deal with Chris-Craft/United TV, features psychiatrist Dr. Irvin Wolkoff, who visits patients in their homes and counsels them on a variety of issues, with Wolkoff guiding them to a solution by the end of the episode. The series ran until 2001, with 88 episodes in total produced.

September 5, 2004 – Aida Has Last Performance on Broadway

On September 5, 2004, the Disney musical Aida played its final performance at the Palace Theatre, ending after 1,852 performances in four and a half years. The Tony Award winning musical, originally entitled Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida and based on the opera by Verdi, had an interesting journey to Broadway, as the musical was very different when it previewed at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as a set mishap during a Chicago performance in 1999 where lead actors Heather Headley and Adam Pascal sustained minor injuries. The final performance featured Deborah Cox as Aida and Adam Pascal returning as Radames.

August 30, 2009 – The Little Mermaid Has Final Performance on Broadway

On August 30, 2009, the Broadway musical The Little Mermaid had its final performance in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, closing after 685 performances. The production, which began with previews on November 3, 2007, received positive reviews from family audiences, but a rather lukewarm response from critics. The musical was scheduled to begin its national tour in 2010, and was retooled by Glenn Casale after the show closed on Broadway. The final run featured Chelsea Morgan Stock as Ariel, Faith Prince as Ursula, Drew Seeley as Prince Eric, Norm Lewis as King Triton, Rogelio Douglas Jr. as Sebastian, Eddie Korbich as Scuttle, Jonathan Freeman as Grimsby, Tyler Maynard as Flotsam, Eric LaJuan Summers as Jetsam, Robert Creighton as Chef Louis, and Trevor Braun, Major Curda, and Brian D’Addario alternating in the role of Flounder.

August 28, 2001 – Beauty and the Beast Celebrates its 3000th Performance

On August 28, 2001, the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast celebrated a milestone of 3000 performances, with the musical shortly after being named the 10th longest running musical on Broadway of all time. The production had been through many changes since its first performance on April 18, 1994, including special guest stars playing lead roles (such as Toni Braxton playing Belle), new songs added, and new wardrobe stylings. The musical ran until July 29, 2007, reaching 5,461 performances, and reaching the peak of the 9th longest running musical on the Great White Way, with fellow Disney musical The Lion King surpassing it and standing at 3rd.
